I do not think it was luck. Again it sounds like some of yall are not giving our players any credit. Yall have been complaining about our setters not being all that good. Well, whoopie do, Stanford did not have a real setter today. According to some of yall our team does not have a real setter or good setter too. To me this evens out and we just kicked their butts because both teams where without a real setters since yall keep saying our setters are not all that good.
Respectfully, we won a handful of points where Stanford had no idea who was taking the 2nd contact and had multiple players running into each other. Can only win the match in front of you but we got a few free points!

At the time, we were on our way to losing 3-1. Stanford was blocking everything and hitting well. Safi is not great in serve receive so we were out of system a lot.

Then Safi bounced a ball off the Setter's head (she was blocking), knocking her out the game. They brought in a freshman outside hitter (Stanford has no backup setter, other is out for season) and chaos ensued. Stanford's girls didn't know who was setting, the new OH didn't know where she was supposed to be on the court, comical actually.

We found our groove and won the set, eventually winning the match.

We needed a break, found one in their confusion then our team capitalized on it, began to play with confidence and Jackie Taylor started to dominate (blocking, hitting). We were blocking everything, even ones that didn't end up in a direct point, and soon built a nice lead in the 5th.

Really nice to get a win, against a ranked team, regardless how it played out.

Edited because @volleyballer1 reminded me: The starting setter did come back in game in 5th set but by then, we had regained confidence and momentum. So that's a huge positive that even in Stanford's full strength in 5th, we found a way to win!

UNC won the game. That is how it shows on paper and they deserved to win. Parks set the entire 5th set and we still won.

That first set was the best set of volleyball we played all year. It was clinical. I was like WTH is this team and where have they been.

Stanford serve caused havoc Set 2 and 3 and the block feasted bc of serve recieve. Not sure we will face a team that serves as aggressive as the Cardinal.

I hope we use this as belief and get the monkey off our back and eliminate the pressure of the good win.

Stepping stones.

That is on them. Sounds like you are still trying to make an excuse to me. Look, we can say the same thing about our football team getting beat by Syracuse in OT Saturday night. We can say players were out of place. We did not have the right quarter back in, etc. Our football team just got beat just like Stanford, no excuses. Yall have been on our coach for a long time now. Heck, I have been on him too, but last night, the team came through, coaching came through. Just give our coaches and team some credit here for just winning and beating Stanford. Go Heels!

Thank you for the wonderful comments. We have some posters making excuses on how we won. I do not like that because they are trying to find fault in our win. We won and that is all that should matter. It does not matter how you win, if the win was pretty or not, just win baby and that is what our young women did. Sounds like some Stanford heaters to me.

Thanks again for the wonderful comments. It sounds like some posters are upset that we beat Stanford. I have never seen statement like this when we win. I starting to think that we have some posters who wanted Stanford to win and are upset that we beat them. If that is the case then stay off of our board because we want positive comments and not negative comments. Great win, proud of you ladies. Go Heels!

Your responses are very odd, it was clearly a huge factor in the game and to wipe away and pretend it didn’t happen is silly. Acknowledgement of it is not minimizing our come back. 2 things can be true, as we also played much better in the 4th set and our girls (especially jackie) stepped up in the 5th and dominated even with Parks back. I am more than happy to give Coach Schall credit. He’s created an amazing culture here and he made some crucial coaching moves last night (making West a 6 rotation player) that were a huge reason we won

That is all that I am saying. Just give the coaches and players credit. We have people on this board for some reason want to find fault when they won. My responses centered around this point. Did we not win? yes we did, so for once let's give this team and coaching credit for doing that. I am sorry you could not understand what I was saying. I hope this clarifies what I trying to say. I was making comments to those posters who want to taint the win yesterday. It sound like that wanted Stanford to win.

I can almost guarantee noones posting on a unc volleyball message board wants us to lose. We all “fan” a little differently and we’re all in agreement that it was a great and needed win

We obviously got a little lucky with their setter missing about 25 points in the 4th set but still an awesome come back. 3 huge kills by Laynie to end the 4th set and then Thorpe got her mojo back and had 2 huge kills at 10-8 and 11-8 in the 5th. Obviously Taylor was amazing
Nah, we have multiple players out too.

Taylor was a brick wall today; she is getting better and better.

Pretty crazy to see a game where neither team could handle the block. It lead to a lot of scrappy points.

UNC is now 4-0 and 5th set matches. These women have grit, stamina and perseverance.

First win vs The Cardinal since 2015, though we dis not play often prior to their joining the ACC. Hopefully we can set the Cardinals straight as well at Thanksgiving.

We moved up to 22nd in the AVCA Volleyball rankings.

#24 in RPI (the computers do not love Stanford too much: down at #29)

Our 4 losses:
  • #8 Kentucky
  • #13 Vandy
  • #2 Nebraska
  • #5 Louisiville
#24 seems a little low, but what do I know?

Our best wins are #29 Stanford, #30 Colorado State, #39 GT & #58 Cal, all at home, three in 5 sets. If Volleyball used the men's basketball quad system, Stanford and CSU would be our only quad 1 wins, and we would be hoping they win a bunch more to avoid dropping out of top 30. In Women's basketball we would have zero quad 1 wins (their quad system is more stringent).

Unfortunately, UNC and Stanford are the only two teams on the ACC's 2nd tier. (top 30 teams) The next best are #39 GT & #49 Miami who are basically bubble teams. Everyone else is below #50 and needs to get some upsets to make the tourney So this Stanford W is our only meaningful ACC win because our schedule is unfortunately only top 10 teams, teams we should sweep, and Stanford.

Our next two games are #233 Cuse and #133 BC. We have a good chance of being 11-1 in conference before heading to #6 SMU, then at #2 Pitt. We would be ahead of either team in ACC standings if we managed to beat them. Both teams still have to play Louisville (SMU plays them twice.)

As others have said, we probably need a top 10 upset at some point to earn a top 16 seed to host. The two coming up soon or Louisville later. (or the ACCT). Our next toughest games are #49 Miami (twice) and #54 FSU, which will not register on the RPI (unless we lose)

We started the weekend 23 in ACVA. Beat a solid Cal team and #15 Stanford. We move up one to #22 and they fall to #18. That is pretty hard to rationalize.

There is luck and injury involved in every sporting event. To credit the Stanford win to either is simply an ill informed take. That was mental toughness, togetherness and execution when it mattered most that brought home that W

Not a single person has credited the win to luck. Mentioning it and acknowledging it, does not mean it is the only factor.

The AVCA rankings are ****. The committee uses RPI and KPI. KPI doesn’t really like us, has us 32nd. Would be nice to beat SMU since Newsome is out for them, that would be the resume boost we need

Cal sweeps Stanford. Parks did not play. Stanford did have their backup setter though
It does not matter if Parks played or did not play. Who cares. Stanford got beat again and in my book that is all that should matter. Sounds like someone is trying to make an excuse. I wish people would stop that. Heck, our football team had several starters out against Syracuse this past weekend in football. Did anyone state this fact we they got beat? No, they did not do that. So, please stop making excuses when a team like Stanford's get beat. They have other players on scholarship like every other college volleyball team. Cal beat them bottom line. Give Cal women volleyball players some credit and stop deflating their victory.

Also, we did not have Malone when we played Stanford. Nobody stated this fact. Some of yall posters were trying to defend Stanford when they lose. This is starting to become an eye sore on our board. The last time I checked this was supposed to be a UNC board. If I did not know better, it seems like our own posters are pulling for Stanford. Stop it, Stop it, Stop it.

Anyone know why the GoHeels account stopped doing highlight videos for the volleyball team? The last one they did was against Notre Dame. We didn't get highlights for the Cal game or the Stanford game.

Wonder if we see Malone tonight.....her return was supposed to happen around this weekend....would be good to get her back in the swing before we head to SMU and Pitt next week.

May be hard decisions ahead with how well West has played.
Good point; however, if our coaching staff is smart, they should find a way to play both of them. I would bring Malone back into the rotation slowly. I not sure how many minutes, but I would say at least 10 to 20 minutes at first just to see how she does. What we do know is West has been crushing it. There is no way she needs to be put back on the shelf and not play at all moving forward. The coaching staff must find a way to make this work.

Malone dressed out. Second game in a row (at least, I just noticed against Stanford) that Bobbitt has not been. Clifford starting for Schutter, who I don’t see anywhere on the bench.

Nice easy sweep.
Malone didn’t end up playing today.
Dominant first 2 sets (both 25-11) and then got everyone some playing time with some different rotations (we even had 2 rotation errors early) and won the 3rd set 25-20
I assume Schutter had a concussion after the injury she had in the 4th set against Stanford, or she had an illness as tons of **** is going around right now.
Let’s sweep BC and get 1 next week

I think it's because SMU hosts Virginia Tech in football that night at 7 pm. And I think I read somewhere that Moody Coliseum's parking garage and that area are used for tailgating and parking. But I could be wrong.
It might also have to do with us wanting to fly to Pittsburgh Friday evening to be there full day Saturday before the Pitt match on Sunday. What a crappy schedule to have to play in Dallas and Pittsburgh in essentially a 48 hour window.
