Did the Blind Rodent find a peanut? (I agree on something with Jeff Goodman...)

I've said a time or two on this board back to the late spring (to widespread ridicule which I expect will continue) that the potentially most devastating line-up for Kentucky has, at the 1-2-3: 1. Alex Wilkins, 2. Kam Williams, assuming fully healthy and 3. Milan Momcilovic. I feel that even more with Mitchell added to Moreno at the 4-5: Wilkins with his multi-level scoring distributing to TWO GUYS on the perimeter with proven ability to hit over 40 percent from 3, with options to let Mitchell drive on the hoop, or to find Moreno 1-on-1 inside.

Diallo becomes back-up at 1-2. That 1. eliminates the somewhat overlapping skill sets of Wilkins and Zoom, 2. gives you even more size in the starting line-up and 3. another great outside threat. I think it is also a potentially better defensive line-up. And all these guys are experienced players who can handle ball pressure. Also, Diallo has a bit of a reputation for turning the ball over. The last thing you want with five proven scorers on the floor is lost possessions.

Then on today's FIELD of 48 Jeff Goodman made somewhat the same case. So now I have to question my own sanity. But the upside with the line-up is pretty intriguing...

That lineup would be our best shooting lineup I think with the best post options. We need to see how good Zoom is distributing the ball though. He may be so good that him and Wilkins is just too efficient to keep off the court. I suspect zoom/alex/Milan/Mitchell/Moreno will be a common lineup all year. I also wouldn’t mind seeing McBride in a lineup at the 4 seeing how he shoots and is versatile with Mitchell sliding over to the 5 some nights.

Depending on our backups (Morton, Williams) and how they adjust to our schedule, I could see Zoom playing PG when Wilkins is on the bench. If Kam could get healthy this may be a possibility. But I think Pope plays Zoom and Alex together to start the season.

With Pope, he will play 10-11 guys regularly so I don’t see this being out of the realm later in the season.

It's just my opinion and I always respect the opinion of the op and he might be right about it being our best lineup but...I don't think that lineup is ever going to happen because of the makeup of the team. Diallo and Mason Williams are good and both are going to play a lot and I think they'll be playing point guard. I see Zoom at point and Mason as the primary backup with Wilkins playing point on occasion and Morton being the top 2 guard reserve unless Kam or Trent can take the minutes from him.

I assume the idea is Kentucky is never without Wilkins or Zoom on the court. Which means your lineup, even if they both start, will get some run. If it performs well enough Pope will run that lineup more often. I think the amount of depth we have is ultimately probably a good thing, but I do worry about spreading the minutes around too much and not getting the most out of your best players and lineups. We know Pope caps minutes to some extent, which may be fine in the regular season. I just hope when the tournaments start he is willing to run his best guys 30+.

I agree with you; when playing a tough opponent or in any tight game the best players should play 30+ minutes. But in games we should win and are ahead comfortably I have no problem playing the starters 22-25 minutes to give the bench some playing time. Also, I suspect Kepnang will be load managed and will only play about half the games, against the burliest opponents, so in half the games there would be an extra 10-15 minutes of playing time. Some players won't get the minutes they expected a couple months ago but rather than sulk, they should aspire to play so well the coach has no choice but to play them.

I’ve had the same thought but I think it depends on the matchups. Wilkins + Kam + Mom gives you shooting but neither Kam nor Mom are drivers, so if you have one good defender on Wilkins you stop creation. With Zoom in you solve that problem. Depends on the matchups you have, but it’s great to have options!

Also, let’s not sleep on Wilkins shooting. I’m looking to see his %s increase from a slide over to SG with higher quality shots.

The metrics have Wilkins as the worst player by a lot. It would take a massive year two jump for him to be the primary guy. They should be using him as a spot-up player in the corners who can create off the dribble if he gets run off the line.

Mark Pope says Kentucky has started moving away from the traditional 1-through-5 positional system.
“We’re kind of playing a format with two lead guards, two wings and a big.”
Instead of calling players 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s, Pope says Kentucky is now identifying them as lead guards, wings and bigs.
The modern era of positionless basketball has officially reached Lexington

Kam certainly doesn't qualify as a lead guard, he's a wing. Alex and Zoom are lead guards as is Mason.
