Gee, I didn't realize they were all "literally" handed their wealth.

Who handed it to them?
This isn’t controversial…

Post WW2 the Greatest Generation benefited greatly from the GI bill (and rightfully so). This allowed them significant buying power in the market and extensive employment opportunities. This was passed on to their kids, the Boomers. When the Boomers came of age, houses were cheap, college was affordable, and debt was minimal. When the Boomers got into power they started printing money, borrowing against future generations raking up massive debt all the while increasing their own personal wealth and entitlements. When it was time for them to start moving to retirement, their reckless spending, borrowing, and stupid investments caused the 2007-08 financial crash thus F’n over Gen X and Elder Millennials.
Because they were stupid entitled brats they lost their retirement in the crash and therefore delayed their retirement, thus staying in positions they had no business being in with their archaic dumbass way of thinking.

The Boomers passed significant increases to estate and capital gains taxes, thus robbing their children and grandchildren of inheriting the very wealth they benefited from greatly all to fund entitlement programs that benefit them that will be bankrupt by the time Gen X is old enough to recognize.

so every time I hear a f’n Boomer try to lecture a Millennial or GenZ on hard work, saving, not having avocado toast for breakfast so they can afford a house, it makes my blood boil.

Boomers need to, at the very least, get out of the f’n way.

this isn’t controversial …

... (worried Americans: the retirement crisis no one is talking about) here's a video that might make you consider your statement about boomers being handled their wealth....

there were opportunities, but you might be surprised at how few took advantage of it. Studies show that somewhere about 50% of boomers have more than $50,000 saved for retirement. that certainly would not appear as if boomer's wealth was handed to them...

Boomers have 0 excuse … if they have less than $50k in savings, then it’s because they are just bad with money and are reckless.

but why should they care? MY social security will be paying for them to live out their entitled whiny lives.

The expectations aren't different. Even 1950s style starter homes are largely out of reach for younger adults.

Bullshi.t. I have 5 nieces and nephews, all of whom are under 30 and own homes. Only 2 even went to college. None of them came from money. The 2 that went to college? One has a very low paying job doing what she loves, and the other is an RN, having graduated from a pretty unimpressive, cheap college. Neither of their spouses have very impressive employment. Yet they figured it out, with no financial help from their parents. Is it more challenging than at some other points in time? Sure. But this whining helplessness and blame-placing has to stop.

Used cars are hyper expensive. And jobs are way harder to get. Meanwhile younger people are more educated than Boomers and Gen Xers yet are working to rent.

I'm glad you help your kids out. A lot of Boomers don't.
just in terms of housing - post ww2/levittown-style housing developments are increasingly harder to build because public opposition to anything other than high-income or senior-oriented housing and local zoning ordinances

boomers, as a general rule of thumb, are the overwhelming influence in both

You really think every boomer has 3 houses? You really expect people to retire early? I know you've been programmed to think all boomers are bad, but I would suggest you educate yourself about ALL the boomers, and not make generalization about a very large group of people.
Of course not. Come on this is a broad generalization here and more indicative of what the boomers in wealth and power did during their prime. It’s though an indictment of under their generation they had power far too long, got our country into debt in the name of lower taxes, gave no crap about global warming and never got out of the way resulting in our massive decline under a boomer madman aged 80.

We have had a boomer president since 1992. Except in 2020-2024 when we had one…older than a boomer 🤣

It's hard to imagine a generation more self centered and more selfish than Boomers. Their own kids hate them. They don't have much to do with their grandkids. A lot of Boomers have retreated to states like Florida to live it up while a lot of their familial relationships fall apart.

My parents are boomers. Love my parents, although I lost my mom a month ago. They were as involved as they could be with my kids. Routinely drove 45 minutes just to watch sports practices and almost never missed any games.

All of my friends have boomer parents also. Most are in the same boat.

As with many things, I think you are quite misguided

Anybody who thinks younger people have the same opportunities as Boomers is clueless. From jobs to education to housing. It's all way harder for young people to break in. And a lot of that stems from Boomers voting for Republicans and corporate Dems that box poorer people out.

And for the record, Gen X is responsible, too. But that generation is way smaller. In general old people vote for themselves.

Millennial here. 🙋‍♂️ Very successful job. Clemson degree plus a MBA. Very nice home on the water. Most of my friends are very successful as well. Boomer elections didn’t hold any of us back.

I have to disagree about expectations. I don't think the 1950's homes are out of reach for young adults, unless they're in a really nice neighborhood. I have a friend who's married son just bought a house. I don't think he makes much money, maybe his wife does, but they max'd out what they could buy so they could get a house with a pond, with hardwood floors, with nice countertops, with 4 bathrooms. They have no kids (yet). I feel they had the expectation that they would have a nicer house than the parents. They certainly weren't going to have a smaller house.

If kids don't have the money, then they should go to a community college for 2 year and then transfer. But I feel the kids have an expectation that they should be able to go to a 4 year college.

You do know the boomers with wealth and power are a very small portion of the "boomers". So labeling all boomers as bad isn't the answer.

my opinion exactly, if they didn't save for retirement, well.....my point in posting was just to sort of debate your comment about boomers being handed wealth. If 50% have less than $50,000 saved for retirement and the last boomer was born in 1964, so the last are now coming to be 62 or so, then somebody didn't hand 50% of them wealth.

Now, do you feel the same way about all the people on welfare, SNAP, Medicaid today...your tax dollars are paying for their meals, medical care etc...

My point , your statement about boomers just seems to be a gross exaggeration...

While I know you won't accept this...a while ago I posted an article from the WSJ, that analysed the median cost of housing in the 60s or so compared to housing today. And, when adjusted for inflation, mortgage rates etc, it turned out the median today is LESS expensive when compared to then...

median home price in 1960 was $11,900
that's $135,618.57 today

median home price in 1969 was $25,600
that's $240,120.81 today

actual median home price right now is about $400,000

I believe there's more to consider. What was/is the sqft of the homes in 1960, 1969, and today. I'm going to guess that price per sq isn't going to be as far off as your numbers.

Edit: And if the sqft doesn't explain the different, then let's talk about the inside of the house and the differences there. The homes today are much bigger and nicer.

This is a good point. Both sets of my grandparents lived in ~1200 square foot one story ranch homes with carpet, linoleum kitchen and bath floors, popcorn ceilings, super basic finishes, etc etc.

Even vinyl villages now are far more posh. Not even considering nicely built homes. And much, much larger.

i don't disagree

but it's also very difficult to build small, affordable homes now in large part because of immense public backlash to developments containing them and zoning ordinances that often require relatively large lots (which makes small houses unfeasible economically)

boomers are typically the major driving force behind the backlash and they've controlled local govts that have developed these ordinances for decades

Is it the Boomers as a class who are awful, or is it that so many of the awful oligarchs and plutocrats are boomers?

Most Boomers don't deserve the attacks. Some do . . . but not so much because they are Boomers.

This is absolutely true. Just as an awful lot of Boomers cannot seem to read criticism of their generation on a macro level without taking it way too personally.

If each generation faces unique challenges and benefits from unique boons, it's reasonable to assume that each generation also bears unique responsibilities to maintaining the health of our nation.

The expectations are different, which in turn makes it seem harder. When I was growing up I drove a car that would die at every light unless I kept my foot on the gas. I loved that car. In today's world the kids want the newest phone, the nicer car, and if they don't get it, they're pissed. The young people these days don't want a starter home or even a larger one that needs work. The young people want the perfect house with all the fancy features. Like I said, the expectations make it seem harder, lower the expectation and it won't be so difficult.

If the boomers have so much money, then why is it so hard for their kids. I provided for my kids. I can't control whether other parents provided for their kids. so if you had parents that didn't pay for your college, that's on your parents (not the whole generation).
Genuinely curious, why do you defend boomers so much? You a boomer or nah?

With the price of land, it's difficult to build a small house because the overall cost will be higher per sqft (when including the lot). I think you're misguided on the ordinances. In my area the lots are bigger because the ordinance is about undeveloped land. I don't know the exact number, but it's something like the house can't consume more than 40% of the lot. So as the houses got bigger, the lots had to get bigger. I think we probably all can agree we don't want to live in a neighborhood where the homes have no yards because the house is too big for the lot.

I mean, you make blanket positive statements all the time about boomers, and yet you were raised by the Silent Generation. You actually have no leg to stand on, nor do you know what boomers were like other than them being a generation before you.

Seems like you're an elder Gen X, and that must be tough as no one cares about you or your generation- but you don't need to white knight for Boomers.

All the things you've said in this thread, about "kids these days" having high expectations is for a reason. It's both a result of capitalism and the pollyannish worldview boomers had and passed on to their Millennial children and elder Gen Z kids. They also affected society in a way that furthered the capitalism dream that has led us to late stage capitalism, and now are mad that everyone isn't grateful for what they "sacrificed."

They're prudish, dogmatic, and (for the most part) see the world very black and white. They literally lived the sexual revolution in the 70's and then decided "that wasn't OK" and got collective sticks up their @SS.

Some of this is anecdotal, but tbh there are a ton of studies on generational philosophies and worldviews- I've read many, and it might be helpful for you to read some before you white knight for them more.

Also, (and this is for free), idk how you feel about Gen Z but they're SUPER boomer like in their worldview and behavior. Look up a few studies on the similarities- they suck in the same way. Gen Alpha seems pretty dope though

I'm Gen X. And were part of the problem, too.

Both generations vote Republican, they both vote for self centered policies. They vote to strip education, strip safety nets, and give as many tax cuts to rich people as possible. And both generations do this over and over and over.

At a certain point both Boomers and Gen X need to take responsibility for being okay with screwing over everyone but themselves.

Holding on to wealth? What do you expect people to do with their money, hand it out on the street corner?

The philanthropy among our nation's wealthy has been steadily becoming more concentrated among less and less people for awhile now. The good news is that those that are still philanthropic, are doing so at a much higher rate.

But, the idea that once one has made it they have an obligation to give back has fallen off, which probably shouldn't suprise anyone that has been paying attention to the general culture shift towards nationalism and greed.

The anger against Boomers is deserved. They took as much as they could, gave as little back as they could, and now cry that anyone dare criticize them for their lousy choices.

You're proving my point here. And I also got mine. I'm a home owner, college educated, and walked out of school with minimal debt. Guess what? I understand that those were gifts by other generations. So I vote for people who want to keep these gifts rolling so my younger friends and family have their opportunities. Most Boomers don't. They got their's and then vote for the people who want the gifts to end.

His posts don't read like defending to me, just run of the mill defensivness. Which is probably as destructive on a large scale as acknowledging for decades that social security is in need of reform due to a concentrated and aging workforce and doing nothing about it after attaining the power to make those reforms.

This quote of his is hilarious because literally EVERYONE has been coming after Millennials since the early-mid 2000's. We dgaf because we collectively have a good sense of self but his fear mongering of "who do you think they're coming after next" is next level stupid. No one cares about Gen X and no one goes after them so I think his main character syndrome is a lil salty.

Boomers said Millennials sucked cuz they ordered Avocado Toast at restaurants as early as damn 2012 💀

It's silly because anyone looking to laugh praise or criticism om a generation is going to find exactly what they're looking for, same as claiming entire generations should be exempt from criticism.

It's all emotional weakness amd immaturity coming to the surface. If they're not careful the boomers are going to have a legacy of having the thinnest skin of any Americans, Gen x will be known for terrible podcasts doling out life advice to themselves about how selling out was actually cool all along and the millennials will be dead from heart failure or stuck wondering why they never had a defined culture of their own that they could turn their backs on in middle age.

I mean, Boomers DO have the thinnest skin of any Americans, probably in the history of our country. Gen X have never really cared about anything and expect to be overlooked and thus are overlooked, Millennials have main character syndrome and are entitled, and Gen Z is so online coded they can barely function in real life.

These are all stereotypes, and yes they can be a weakness and immature- but my only pushback would be that your statement is reductive in the "both sides" way, in that its irresponsible to say that "no generation has a weakness," yes, and yet some generations are able to cause more damage (and have) than others.

To say otherwise is dangerous imo. In the history of the world, almost ALL generations have been worried about the state of the world because of the generations following them.

Boomers have done this with Millennials and everyone else, and yet, Millennials don't really do that with Gen Z and Gen Alpha. They saw the lies the generation raised them on, and are mad at those before them, not worried about those that come after them.
