These multi-year, astronomical coaching salaries can eventually bite you in the *** and this is a prime example of how quickly a program can quickly go downhill in the NIL era. It’s the main reason Saban retired and is an advocate for some restraint in the college athletics landscape, dude knew what was coming and didn’t want the headache of shuffling rosters every year.

From clempson fans the two main reasons for Dabo's downturn is that he hasn't been able to fill the positions around him with the same quality of coaching as before. Brent Venables and Tony Elliot left to head Oklahoma and Virginia. Both played huge roles in the two NCs. Right behind that is him sticking with players that just dont have the talent for way too long and refusing to adjust to the portal. Similar to the way Cal was a few years riding it out with guys that just wilted on the court and had the mantra of "we dont pay players we send them to the nba"

I was about to say sounds like Cal, who just promoted his son to assistant coach 😂

Heard some of that on the radio and just had to laugh at the sheer cringiness! The condescension was unbecoming to put it mildly. He talked to that reporter as if thought he was a third grader who didn't understand the most elementary things. I wonder if he ever tries to make his players feel that small!

During Clemson's ascent to the top of the football world, there were lots of insinuations that Swinney/Clemson were paying players. There's likely truth to that, and same could be said for other successful programs. I don't understand his reluctance to use the portal and NIL to keep his program competitive - if they were paying for recruits in the past anyway. I also don't understand boosters being ok with that.

I can see this year being his last. Not sure how any Clemson fans have any confidence in him at all. The game has clearly passed him by. Couldn’t happen to a worse person not named Lane Kiffen. Can’t stand that doosh.
Fixed it. Not a fan of Dabo but Kiffen is an even bigger turd.

I don't know if he's so committed to the old system or is just too stubborn to adapt and change, but it's no longer working and the game is passing him by.

He has sons that have been holders for place kickers. I think 3? The parallels to the Cal tenure are uncanny.
Yep, all three played WR and the latest is the holder. One still coaches at Clemson, and the other left for Samford after coaching at Clemson too. Seems a sure thing the youngest will be on staff after his current graduate year.

Man it wasn't long ago that Debo was the clear heir apparent to saban at Bama. I don't think I've ever seen a coach lose his fastball so quickly without a major scandal.

Drew said on KSR this morning Dabo has like. $57 million buyout at Clemson? That’s insane. Did Mitch do the contract?
Dabos buyout is still better than Stoops. First, he has 2 championships, so deserved a huge buyout (we had a citrus bowl victory). Second, he has an offset clause. I’m sure another team would hire him and take a chunk of the salary off Clemson (like Franklin and Va Tech).

Stoops contract will go down as one of the most ridiculous in CFB history.

He’s more of an old school guy. If he’s not going to adapt to the changing environment then he should just retire. Saban, Wright and K got out. They didn’t want to deal with the NIL craziness.

They probably were, as was Alabama. Saban got out because when it's legal to pay, other Schools have much deeper pockets than Alabama.

The State of Alabama has one Billionaire, and he's an Auburn fan.

IMO the douche bag sports reporter got what he had coming. I’m not a Dabo loyalist by any stretch, but if you chose to play with matches in a post-game presser…
