Depends on the injury. If it’s something that lingers and looks like it will drag into next year, go ahead and give him a couple extra years. Not difficult to squint your eyes and imagine a world where everyone stayed healthy and pope is gunnin for his third straight title in 2027.With Noah hurt I think the best case scenario is just making the tournament as an 12th seed. I'm a huge critic of Pope and didn't like the injury excuse the past two seasons but if Noah is out an extended period of time I think you'd have to give Pope another year.
"Championship or bust every year, or I'm going to a message board to whine like a baby."It wasn’t a strawman argument or an argument at all but an example of how ridiculous some of you are. There is no lowering of standards.
A poll from twenty years ago wouldn’t look any different than it does today. Maybe a little worse.
Short-sighted thinking is a sign of low intelligence. The expectation for this specific season is not the same as the expectation for the program in general. If you can't wrap your head around that it's on you.
So is lack of basic comprehension.Short-sighted thinking is a sign of low intelligence.
You're literally retarded. Close your mouth stupid. So is lack of basic comprehension.
I'm sorry I called you retarded. I feel bad. You are kinda retarded but I apologies. So is lack of basic comprehension.
I think the part you’re not grasping is that for the standards to be lowered, they would have had to be higher in the past. Those poll numbers would look like that most any year. The amount of people putting sweet sixteen is very concerning. Nobody should be happy or content with sweet sixteens, especially in Pope's third year.
My benchmark may be a little too low, but I'm a realist in the NIL era. Too much turnover, too many kids playing for the money and not the university, the fans or their teammates. That said...
I expect, at a minimum:
An Elite 8, once every FOUR years
An SEC Regular Season Championship, once every FOUR years and Top Five in the SEC EVERY year
An SEC Tournament Championship, once every FOUR years and to make the weekend EVERY year
At least a 4 seed entering the NCAA tournament EVERY year
To land a consensus Top 10 HS player, once every TWO years
To land a consensus Top 20 Portal player EVERY off-season
I don't think a singular outlier means mash the "Burn it to the ground and start over" button if those goals aren't reached, but they create cause for concern. Start stacking them up together, for a couple seasons in a row, then the panic is warranted. Regardless of who the coach is, whether we are a one and done NBA farm club or a transfer portal payday stop or something in between, we have to be consistent. A mediocre program doesn't sell itself well to recruits regardless of the history if they can't win games year after year.
Did you guys know that from 1939 (the first NCAA tourney) until 2019, UK went to 38 Elite Eights in 80 years. That's an Elite Eight almost half the time. That's the historic average before Cal's last few years. We are UK, championship or bust every year or I’m going to a message board and whine like a baby all day. Who’s with me?

Let’s go guys. If we don’t repeat this in every thread our standards are DONE!!
But that's literally the standard you've set now. Setting it for 1 is literally lowering the standard. And it hasn't just been 1 season. The expectation for this specific season is not the same as the expectation for the program in general. If you can't wrap your head around that it's on you.
So you agree. E8 is Uks standard now?Yes.. Making deep runs is the standard. You almost get it.
Mark pope seems to be retarded at coaching basketballI'm sorry I called you retarded. I feel bad. You are kinda retarded but I apologies.
I agree. Which I why I was making fun of the below statements:Did you guys know that from 1939 (the first NCAA tourney) until 2019, UK went to 38 Elite Eights in 80 years. That's an Elite Eight almost half the time. That's the historic average before Cal's last few years.
That's not an unreasonable standard for an 80 year sample size. So UK fans expecting an Elite Eight every other year is actually the UK standard.

That makes an E8 the minimum expectation, not the standard.I agree. Which I why I was making fun of the below statements:
“But it does keep getting lowered when fans become happy or content with an E8. You're saying we are okay with that. That's who we are now. UK 20 years ago would have never been okay with E8s.”
“We are UK, where E8s are the standard!”
To that dude, that means that’s all you WANT.
I really hope your idiot *** thinks that you spell apologize "apologies". ******* moron.I'm sorry I called you retarded. I feel bad. You are kinda retarded but I apologies.
I mean it is splitting hairs but there were only 8 teams in the NCAA tournament from 1939 - 1950 so you were automatically in the Elite 8 (it actually wasn't even called that yet, but semantics) if you made the tournament. 4 of those "Elite 8's" were during this time and two of our National Titles. Then it expanded to 22 teams in 1953, Then fluctuated between 22 and 25 teams (1962) until it was expanded to 32 teams in 1972. 1985 it expanded again to 64 teams. 2011 it expanded again to 68 teams. And now we are up to 76 teams.Did you guys know that from 1939 (the first NCAA tourney) until 2019, UK went to 38 Elite Eights in 80 years. That's an Elite Eight almost half the time. I’m not completely sure that he understands the definition of standard. I also think he thinks those that come on a message board to talk basketball sets the standard.Deep runs, yes.
I don’t think they’re banning anyone anymore. Honest question. Why create yet another account? The days of UK's glory are fleeting. Soon, they will be butt a distant memory. Very sad.

With our resources?? That myth was busted yesterday with the article saying we have no resources. That’s why Mitch is gone and J Batt is here. Mitch never attempted to raise money for NIL. He didn’t believe in it. We are so far behind we can see our own butts.Elite Eight or Pope needs to be relieved of his duties. If you can't do that in 3 years at UK with our resources then you're never going to be good enough to be here long term.
Calipari had double digit loses every year since NIL began except one. Since NIL took effect. UK has one season without double digit loses except one 8 loss season. Thank Mitch Barnhart and his NIL stance for that. Not the coaches.I’m tired of Mark Pope always having double figure losses! He had a handful of games where he completely got blown out that Nashville game was embarrassing.
Championship titles mean the most to me. For those of you saying you don't care about the tournament but more about the regular season I truly question why. We never add any more titles to our current total of 8 by not caring about the tournament. The tournament is the only determining factor to add championships. Guess I care more about championships than all time wins total. Please explain why you don't.Put me in the "it's more about the season than the tournament," crowd. Crazy things happen in the tournament. Gotta be good during the season and look like an SEC contender.
The question by OP was the "minimum". Of course we want championships but no school gets them every year other than UCLA in the 60's. Minimum of Elite 8 at least gets us in the area of winning more titles.Damn, I never knew UK played for E8s. I seem to remember that exact argument when Cal would lose in the E8. Seems like it's safe to say the standard has officially been lowered by the fans.
3 wins in a 6 win tournament is deep and/or the UK standard?Deep runs, yes.
Minimum results that will make you happy or content. The question by OP was the "minimum". Of course we want championships but no school gets them every year other than UCLA in the 60's. Minimum of Elite 8 at least gets us in the area of winning more titles.
Sorry, seems like you just don't understand. No one is happy if all we ever get to in Elite 8 but if we were to get to Elite 8 this year I would say that is the minimum people would be satisfied with for this year. I didn't take the OP's post as a question for all time moving ahead, just this season for Pope and crew. That's my final attempt to explain this to you.Minimum results that will make you happy or content.
If snd E8 is that, the UK fans are now content with E8's. That's the standard now then.
I was hopeful after Pope's first season that we would have a specific approach and offensive and defensive philosophy that used metrics and data analysis to maximize efficiency. A modern approach that would be at the cutting edge of modern basketball. For year two, either he wasn't able to successfully recruit the players that would fit this approach or he bewilderingly chose a bunch of square pegs for round holes. Regardless, it was a lost season. This year he has assembled a roster that seems to be closer to a right "fit" for what I thought was his philosophy, but it's still probably short of what is needed to succeed at the level we expect at UK. I'll hope that we significantly outperform expectations this year, but I think it's more likely that we're going to be facing some serious soul searching late April of 2027 about the future of this program.I would just like to get back to watching enjoyable basketball. Something that hasn't occurred in several years. Basketball, college and pro, has been damn near unwatchable lately. Too many threes, poor defensive play and inconsistant officiating has really dragged basketball down.
