We’d probably be near last place if it weren’t for our Asian-American population pulling up our average.
I’m surprised we are that high.
Old news. USA lags in most educational test/scores/metrics…yet here we are with the best markets, healthcare, innovation, etc….
I’m a big believer in cleaning up and improving education. But at the end of the day, China and most other countries can more easily force their population to focus and specialize.
We indulge in a lot of BS. Part of being a more free society.
I’d be curious to see if these types of score comparisons take into account time spent studying.
How much intensive math and science did you get a day?
I got maybe an hour or two.
Would also like to compare length of school day and how much additional schooling tutoring afterwards. A lot of Asian countries go to school then afterwards go to school.
Would also bet they don’t have unnecessary general requirements.

We also collectively read below a fifth-grade level as a nation, which is both piss poor and unsurprising.

I think we should keep increasing property taxes so that we can give more money to schools. That should solve everything. Pretty sure we spend 5x more than any country per student.
I'm not surprised at the US ranking. I am surprised that Germany and Sweden, countries that were historically known for top level mathematics, are not much better than the US now.
Average means taking into account the best math-ers and mixing them with the worst.

That's not the race we should be focusing on in terms of our failing educational scores..
It's not something new. At UK almost 50 years ago I had to write a group paper with 3 other students. In order to keep my 4.0 gpa(this was before I discovered beer), I had to write the paper myself because one of my partners had no writing ability and the other two were functionally illiterate. At least in those days, in most classes, just showing up for class would ususally be enough to get a a student a passing grade.
Probably because of all of the 3rd world immigrants they have been taking in. We have been doing the same thing.
If the teachers unions focused more on student needs and less on political activism, we’d be better off as a country.
A lot of large school districts in America just pass everybody who shows up then brag about the equality they have achieved opposed to actually trying to educate anyone. Pretty sad state we are in.
The top countries listed are known for taking schooling very seriously. It's ingrained in their society and a pride thing.
Posters already tried putting full blame on teachers when Bevin ran for re-election and we saw how that turned out...and also how Bevin is as a person and parent.
We've got older influencers demanding we make more babies so we don't "go extinct" or something while we're already working too many hours as is as the cost of everything goes up.
So some of this falls on teachers but they can't do a whole lot if parents aren't willing to help at home and it's one teacher with several classes of 20+ students a day. Some of this falls on parents but prices on everything have gotten so out of control in recent years that it may be hard to focus on a child's education when you've gotta be at work, put in OT, and pay for gas and those groceries which will likely have a recall for thumbtacks or an ingredient gone bad that will keep you near a toilet for 16 hours.
It's a cycle of overworked people and one vs many in classrooms and in everyone's spare time we'd rather spell words incorrectly online because we don't know any better, watch videos on YT or TikTok, and brag how we're the best at everything. It'd be comical if it wasn't so, you know, depressing lol.
The UK and Canada are 10th and 11th here respectfully btw. Ya know, those places some decided to hate and/or be scared of in recent years. Looks like they're kicking our butts on this one. Go figure.

But raw intelligence generally is. As in it's not selective to nationality. I would wager many 3rd world students would be equal or superior in general math. Advanced math obviously requires more educational exposure, but give them that and it's probably similar results.
I would wager money it's not the third world kids that are causing diminishing academics. I would be willing to bet it's far more those originating in the country and who's family has been for generations.

Our immigration policies have been wonky for a long time but we’ve done a lot of this damage by our own citizens.
If parents would actually give children proper home lives it would solve most of the issues. If parents aren’t encouraging and providing discipline outside the classroom these only so much teaches can do with 30 kids in a room.

No I agree with you. But the teachers job is to teach and often we see teachers who are more interested in indoctrinating kids than teaching them the basics. But yes, parents should be more involved, I totally agree.

When other nations score math and reading it excludes those in special ed. In the USA we test everyone. That’s one reason we are mid pack and not at the top

We are already at idiocracy.
My dude. Yes there are bad teachers ( just like bad cops and bad doctors and bad anything else). I promise you most of them are in the field to help kids learn. But they are getting little to no support. My mother taught for 30+ years and paid out of her own pocket for supplies. And there were kids that struggled to learn because they had a horrible home life. Or came to school hungry. Or poorly clothed. It’s hard to learn in that’s situation.
