Spatola served on Coach K's staff as a Duke basketball assistant coach from 2007-12. He died unexpectedly on Monday.

Very tough year for Coach K. In April his grandson was charged with felony homicide after killing a teenager while driving drunk.
I wouldn't wish a run of bad news like that on anyone. It definitely puts into perspective how trivial college sports are compared to what life can throw at you.

As ive always said sports are mindless entertainment and a passionate hobby when u think about what really matters n life.

However sports have provided me needed distractions the past almost year since my own loss. Thoughts and prayers to coach K and family.
