Everything I've been talking about Neuralink factories, AI compute clusters, semiconductor fabs, next-gen energy grids, shipbuilding, defense hardware, automotive supply chains all of it is steel before it's anything else.
There is no silicon without steel. No data center without steel. No gigafactory without steel. No warship without steel. No tank, no artillery, no railgun prototype, no hypersonic missile casing, no submarine hull, no satellite launch platform, no planetary defense grid housing none of it exists without domestically available, high-grade, metallurgically precise steel produced at scale.
Do You Now Understand Why This Announcement Was Necessary?
The nation with insufficient domestic steel capacity is a nation that must ask permission to build. Permission from a foreign supplier. Permission from a shipping lane. Permission from a geopolitical rival who can, at any moment, decide that your "just-in-time" delivery is now "not-at-all."
That's not sovereignty. That's a hostage situation. So please understand the implications of what POTUS just done.
The United States currently produces approximately 80-85 million tons of steel annually. That sounds like a lot, until you realize:
China produces over 1 billion tons annually. More than 10x our output.
They can outbuild us in every category infrastructure, military, space, energy simply by having more of the fundamental material.
Steel isn't just a commodity. It's the physical substrate of national power. And for decades, we've been quietly outsourcing that power, convincing ourselves that "free markets" and "comparative advantage" would protect us from ever needing to make our own.
