Call it what you want, Paul.Do you suffer from brain or something? For the thousandth time, pointing out actual facts is not propping anyone up it is simply being fair and objective.
Call it what you want, Paul.Do you suffer from brain or something? For the thousandth time, pointing out actual facts is not propping anyone up it is simply being fair and objective.
I already did and it can't be reasonably refuted. There is no opinion to what I posted about the schedules and our actual standard against them and it's a simple statement of fact.Call it what you want, Paul.
No one wanted Pope. No one wanted Drew. But Pope is here so I try and support the man. I called for his head after the season. He is still here. So....GBBIf I remember correctly, the day Pope was hired, we all had very much the same reaction "Mark Pope??? WTF??? No way".
He never should have been hired. F*ck Barnhart. He screwed the basketball hire up twice.
Pope said the right things and did some very impressive things his first year. He had something going and it got derailed and last year was a failure from the beginning. He recruited to a style that didn't come close to fitting his style.
Let's see what he does this year. Ball is firmly in his court, all the pressure is on him.
Notice you didn’t mention last year…This is true. But none of the teams who were in the elite eight or better the last two years had the level of injuries that UK had. Or, they would not have been in the elite eight.
Not that hard to comprehend.
Does last year not fall under the last two years? I would definitely say he did include last year. I guess you proved him wrong about it not being that hard to comprehend at least for you though.Notice you didn’t mention last year…
I just think we're up ***** creek with Pope, I want Jai Lucas because he's young and a great recruiter. The program needs youth and swagger. It's stale and boring, just like Stoops and UK football post 2021 (ironically, because our young OC left). Stein has UK football rolling, he's 37. The excitement around the program is at a fever pitch. I forgot UK basketball even played last Friday until I checked this board.
Nate Oats would also fit this program to a T. Calipari recruited Tyreke Evans, after he drove his cousin to kill somebody. And when he came to UK we all loved him. So spare me the Brandon Miller stuff.
Honest to god, give that guy 25 million in NIL, a solid staff budget, upgrade the Craft center and get the hell out of the way. I think he'd get to a final four within 3 years here.
I didn’t. It wasn’t a success. It was “fine”. A middle of the pack conference finish and a S16 absolute drubbing isn’t a success. But given everything, it was fine. That team still had issues. The blowouts. The lack of a dude on the roster. But they had good wins too. Year two was a disaster. Each year he has struggled mightily to sign big time talent. This didn’t just manifest itself this offseason. And I’ve said it till I’m blue in the face, he’d never win a thing of merit previously. He didn’t have equity. He’s been meh and he was meh before he got here. Almost would make one think after 10ish years, he’s just kinda meh. But you know, “he’s one of us” and that crap.Nobody is shrugging their shoulders. Pope had one bad/mediocre year, why are we acting like he’s BCG bad?
After the 24/25 season, not one single swinging dick in here said Pope sucked. He has 1 bad year and all the sudden he's ***?
His first year was a success, we all said that after the season, why are we acting like he went to the NIT?
There’s more to a season than a drubbing in the S16Name 1 that played a top 3 SOS, lost their backup pg, lost their starting sf, had to play a pg with a torn dominant shoulder and had to play a pf with back spasms. You can't find anyone.
Pope got a 3 seed out of that and played to seed. To me, that's a hell of an accomplishment.
Heads up, here comes Paul on the white horse! I can’t wait to see your posts in early February. You’re either going to go quiet, completely change your tune, or just sound like a driveling idiot…oh wait.Does last year not fall under the last two years? I would definitely say he did include last year. I guess you proved him wrong about it not being that hard to comprehend at least for you though.
Tell that to Cal who has only gone lower than 4th twice in 17 seasons in the SEC. And I bet he doesn’t end up lower than 4th this season either.Don't care who you bring in here to coach, this is an impossible standard to live up to, especially with the injuries we had. You’re not being realistic.
Nobody said it was our standard, but given the SOS and all the other circumstances, it was acceptable. We were a 3 seed for a reason, we made it to the sweet 16. But I have news for you, 1996 and 2012 is not our standard. If you l0ok at our history, a sweet 16 is an axceptable finish. No otjer ciach in our history played the strength of schedule Mark had to deal with.
Oh, so you do admit there were circumstances Pope dealt with in year 1. Interesting.
I disagree, his first sesson was very exciting, if Butler, Robinson, Carr and KK didn’t suffer injuries, we had a legit shot at a FF.
You do realize Stein coaches a different sport right?
How many games would Stein win if Darby was out, Minchey's right shoulder was torn and Rodriquez was dealing with back spasms?
See bolded question above.
Way to avoid the subject with a vacuous personal attack. However it goes I guarantee I will not resort to whining like a little girl.Heads up, here comes Paul on the white horse! I can’t wait to see your posts in early February. You’re either going to go quiet, completely change your tune, or just sound like a driveling idiot…oh wait.
Is anyone really saying they are supporting Pope, because he played on our '96 team? I haven't seen that.I didn’t. It wasn’t a success. It was “fine”. A middle of the pack conference finish and a S16 absolute drubbing isn’t a success. But given everything, it was fine. That team still had issues. The blowouts. The lack of a dude on the roster. We were just too beat up to compete with a physical team like UT at that point. There’s more to a season than a drubbing in the S16
We were pretty injured against Tennessee when we played them during the regular season too but still won. That was what was so frustrating about that loss. It should’ve been close at the very least and it wasn’t. I think that was the moment I probably lost most of my hope that Pope would work. I still willingly gave him another chance thinking it was simply growing pains. We were just too beat up to compete with a physical team like UT at that point.
But yeah, the losses to Ohio State, Alabama, Arkansas, UGA etc were inexcusable, I'm not arguing that, but what I am saying us the positives far outweighed the negative in 24/25.
Cal also has the 2 worst losses in program history, multiple losses to mid majors in Rupp, the worst season in UK history and an NIT.Tell that to Cal who has only gone lower than 4th twice in 17 seasons in the SEC. And I bet he doesn’t end up lower than 4th this season either.
Why did we run off Cal just to get worse?
And it’s not like football is not filled with multiple players on a weekly basis. Did we not just beat Oklahoma on their turf without CJ Baxter, one of our most important players? Stein has gone games without his most valuable players and still won.
I think all of us were pretty pissed about that sweet 16 *** beating we took and yeah, that is one of Pope's many issues. His teams come out unprepared and get behind. That has to stop this year.We were pretty injured against Tennessee when we played them during the regular season too but still won. That was what was so frustrating about that loss. It should’ve been close at the very least and it wasn’t. I think that was the moment I probably lost most of my hope that Pope would work. He was given the job because of it. The PR campaign sold it to the sheep that flocked to Rupp for a presser “celebrating” the hire. He’s treated differently by the fanbase because of it, absolutely. He should get whatever the results say he should get. Where he played for two yrs doesn’t matter a bit. Couple that with the fact his interaction with the media have been weird at best…yeah, he’s getting exactly what he should be. But it’s not hate. It’s expressing frustration over the coach not meeting the standard while most know he shouldn’t have been given the job. He had to take it, sure. But he’s a smart dude (supposedly), he knew the hell he was gonna catch for not getting it done.Is anyone really saying they are supporting Pope, because he played on our '96 team? I haven't seen that.
I did say at one point that he is one of us and the hate he is getting us a bit extreme.
I also said I hated Barnhart for putting us in a position where we are going to end up eating one of our own.
But I don't recall anyone saying we should support him because he played for UK.
They did, but there were still a good deal of negatives on the court mixed with mostly negatives in recruiting. It’s the whole picture with Pope. His teams are wildly inconsistent. They seem unprepared at times. They aren’t physical. He’s emotional in the media while looking like a deer in headlights on the sideline. Again, the entire big picture. All the top 15 wins were awesome. He also lost more of those games than any previous coach as well. Doesn’t get talked about, but it happened. Got it broke off a bunch too. Kind of like his career, just meh. That’s cool at Utah or West Virginia. He’s just not good enough, and that’s okay. People need to quit making excuses for the guy. Sure, injuries played a part. Sure they had some serious dubs against good teams. But there’s a whole other side to that season. But that team was like most of his better teams. When it made shots, they won. When they didn’t and the opponent had a pulse, well.We were just too beat up to compete with a physical team like UT at that point.
But yeah, the losses to Ohio State, Alabama, Arkansas, UGA etc were inexcusable, I'm not arguing that, but what I am saying us the positives far outweighed the negative in 24/25.
I would like to see Pope be able to recruit one cycle out from under Barnhart. JMI I think is getting its poop together. Will the new AD do the same??I’ve always been a proponent of the NIL/ Pope “conspiracy theory”, because I truly believe that is what ultimately ran Calipari off.
We’ll soon find out where UK stands on that front, when we see what level of head coach the new AD can lure in, when Pope gets let go next April.
I’m a huge Schertz fan but he may not be so easy to get at this point. He’ll be the crown jewel hire of the next off season.Schertz is a serious upgrade and you could have him in a 30 second phone call. It ain’t hard. Mitch was just a friggn doofus.
I honestly wonder how much of first season’s success was “fool’s gold”. How many of those ranked wins were actually ranked wins and how much of that success was thanks to multiple super seniors. Was the first season beginners’ luck? They did, but there were still a good deal of negatives on the court mixed with mostly negatives in recruiting. It’s the whole picture with Pope. His teams are wildly inconsistent. They seem unprepared at times. They aren’t physical. He’s emotional in the media while looking like a deer in headlights on the sideline. Oh, darn. I forgot, we’re not a blue blood. Silly me.I’m a huge Schertz fan but he may not be so easy to get at this point. He’ll be the crown jewel hire of the next off season.
It has been pointed out to you many times already that he is actually meeting the standard if you give the schedule proper consideration. We have played 9 schedules rated 10.60 or higher. 7 previous to Pope across 3 coaches with an avg. rating of 11.44 while winning at a 64% rate with three sweet 16's, two second rounds, one first round, and a missed tournament. Pope's two schedules rate an avg. of 13.5 while winning at 63.9% clip with a Sweet 16 and a second round finish. This of course makes no consideration for the injury issues he has dealt with.He was given the job because of it. The PR campaign sold it to the sheep that flocked to Rupp for a presser “celebrating” the hire. He’s treated differently by the fanbase because of it, absolutely. He should get whatever the results say he should get. Where he played for two yrs doesn’t matter a bit. "Mitch Barnhart is a great AD and UK should hold onto Mark Stoops for dear life. Mark Pope is secretly a UK caliber coach, the schedule was just too hard for him"-Paul Calhoun.Ha Ha! Laughy boy Richie! Facts are funny tee hee hee!
Pathetic strawman attack. If the facts don't work for you just make something up? Apparently lesser schedules that were even close to the rating of the last two were too difficult for 3 previous UK coaches as well."Mitch Barnhart is a great AD and UK should hold onto Mark Stoops for dear life. Mark Pope is secretly a UK caliber coach, the schedule was just too hard for him"-Paul Calhoun.
Who are you talking to? You do realize the fans have no input on hiring decisions, right? You live in some sort of fantasy land. After this venture, I never want to see another unaccomplished person get this job. You should have a FF on the resume, or at least show that you can get to the doorstep before you get this job.
Yeah, not G level bad. And Pope is a legend as a player for being on 96 champs.
I didn’t say they did. I said most nuts on here hate him and want him to fail and this team to fail to see him fired. They think big name coaches will just flock to Kentucky and it’s guaranteed to be turned around.
7.6 and 5.2 as a senior at UK and 8.2 and 6.3 as a Jr. for an avg. of 7.9 and 5.7 at UK in 21.1 mpg. He sacrificed and played his role on a legendary team. He averaged 10.3 and 8.1 as Pac10 freshman of the Year and 12.2 and 8 as a Sophomore.Averaged 7/5 hardly legendary status as a player.
Ask anyone about the team and they think Delk, Anderson, Walker, McCarty, Epps first not Pope. He was an afterthought
He was a head coach for 9 seasons prior to UK if you want to be accurrate.Popes last 10yrs of coaching should not have warranted a phone call from Mitch Barnhart.Because he played for a championship team in 96 is the real reason for ignoring better options.
You missed the point nice try to avoid the real issue as usual. He was a head coach for 9 seasons prior to UK if you want to be accurrate.
You attempted to be deceptive and got called out like so many before you. If it is irrelevant to your point why lie about it in the first place? Your point has been addressed ad nauseum and I don't see much reason to rehash it for someone who can not even be honest about basic facts. You missed the point nice try to avoid the real issue as usual.
Your the one who denies and makes excuses popes record is popes record and your Denial and obsession with defending Pope won't ever change it no matter what you say so _ _ ck off loser. You attempted to be deceptive and got called out like so many before you. If it is irrelevant to your point why lie about it in the first place? I watched all of those players plus Pope and Pope was as slow as syrupI'll go ahead and put you on ignore. This opinion is so stupid I'm going spare myself hearing anything else you have to say. The player you claim to be the worst you have ever seen was Pac10 freshman of the year and played 6 or 7 seasons in the NBA. Did you ever see Obrzut, Shagari, Jared Carter, Jonathan Davis, etc. ?
All I have done is post pertinent facts. I've not so much defended his record as provided some factual perspective and defended the truth. It seems to have you on the brink of a childish albeit foul mouthed temper tantrum. There are several of you that hate anyone that dares get in the way of your mindless ranting. Some of you seem to think it is ok to stretch the truth or just fabricate to make a point.Your the one who denies and makes excuses popes record is popes record and your Denial and obsession with defending Pope won't ever change it no matter what you say so _ _ ck off loser.
