I think as usual some teams are being rewarded based on name and or beating up on light schedules.

#12 UK 6-1 SOS 7.69 (8th of 138)

#11 Tennessee 6-1 SOS 4.13 30th I have no issue giving the edge after the Bama win

#10 Utah 6-0 SOS -3.16 97th being rewarded for weak schedule UK should be above them imo

#9 UCLA 6-0 SOS 5.37 18th They deserve to be here imo.

#8 Texas Tech 6-0 SOS -0.79 74th UK has a case to be above them due to weak schedule imo

#7 Ole Miss 5-1 SOS 6.98 10th It's close but I have no issue giving them the edge

#6 Indiana 5-1 SOS 3.83 31st I think UK should be ranked ahead based on schedule. Best win Nebraska?

#5 Georgia 6-1 SOS 2.79 39th I think UK has a good argument with same w-l record against much better schedule

#4 Notre Dame 6-1 SOS 5.57 17th Lost to only ranked opponent I say edge UK

#3 Ohio St 6-1 SOS 5.10 22nd Same w-l record weaker schedule I think UK has a case to be above them

#2 BYU 6-0 SOS 4.19 28th I'll give the edge for being undefeated but only one quality win imo

#1 Miami 6-0 SOS 0.67 64th I'll give them the edge over us for being undefeated but a weak body of work for a #1. No true quality opponents thus far.

I see a legitimate case for UK to be as high as 7th or 8th based on body of work.

As usual just click links to see schedules and results.

No #12. Just keep winning, not worried about what other teams do
Did you actually bother to look at the schedules and compare the body of work? I'm not at all familiar with this site but I like their rankings.

Good post. The AP top 10 makes zero sense. I wonder if it's the 2 point conversions. Maybe some voters think they were flukes and we could easily be 4-3. Wouldn't surprise me. But chance is part of the game....applies to every team one way or another. Those conversions looked well executed to me. Whether we make the playoffs or not, this team should be ranked top 10 right now. Kentucky EARNED those wins.

If uk had the exact same schedule and results but their jersey said georgia they'd be top 5.

Also IU and notre dame in the top 10 is a joke...theyve both played one good team, and lost

With that being said, beat vandy, then for all that is holy beat UT and get our *** in the playoff

Polls don't mean anything right now. Vegas doesn't mean anything. Keep giving Stein ammo. Make us underdogs in every game. Keep doubting this team. It has worked out well so far.

I think you can easily make a case for 6-8 based on the numbers you provided. How they've won matters too. We're dealing with a super slim margin for error and have squeaked out some close ones. Wins are wins, but I'm sure that plays into it all. What I think plays into more than anything is where we started. Takes longer to climb the mountain when you start at the bottom. Being unranked to start the season is probably the biggest reason we are where we are. Couple that with the second half collapse and ugly end result vs Bama, and it feels just fine where we are. Obviously Bama could make a pretty damned good case for being in front of us as well.

Truthfully, I could give credence to an argument anywhere from 6-12. Take care of business vs Vandy and somehow figure out how to beat the Vols in Knoxville and then you can start the REAL discussion.

I agree that starting point must be factoring but I consider that total BS. Once you start playing games those results are the only thing that should matter.

I agree with much of the OP's premise. That said, I think we'll need to win at Neyland before some pollsters believe that we have top-10 team. Of course, this is completely contingent on what other teams do around us. Beat Vandy while a couple of top-10 teams lose, and we might be there next week. It's been a wild season.

If you mean 2024 when they first started making noise they entered the top 25 at #23 week 6 with no quality wins. They then moved up to #16 a week later for beating a 4-8 Northwestern team and had a rapid rise all the way to #5 by week 11. They then lost their only game against a ranked opponent before beating 1-11 Purdue to finish #9 and getting a playoff bid. Their SOS rated at 1.95 that year.

That’s a nice analysis. But really it’s silly to waste your time worrying about the AP rankings. They’re irrelevant, and nobody’s ever gonna remember what their rankings were in a mid-October week.

The only rankings that actually matter are the CFP rankings, and they haven’t been released yet. Everything else is just meaningless window dressing.

If I considered it as meaningless as you do I wouldn't waste my time but we obviously have a difference of opinion (which is fine) as to the value of where we are ranked and what impact it may have going forward.

Two years ago IU achieved a high ranking (#5) against weak competition and then lost to the only ranked opponent they faced all year finished #9 (three spots ahead of where they currently have us) subsequently being rewarded with a playoff spot.

I would contend that seeing that number next to your name on TV all the time does have some impact on the publicity you receive and therefore recruiting as well.

This is not correct. Indiana only had one loss (to Ohio State) that year when they were “rewarded with a playoff spot”. They had an 11-1 regular season. Their second loss didn’t come until the playoffs, which was obviously after the playoff spots already had done been awarded.

You’re worrying about something irrelevant. The committee has made it clear that it does not consider the AP rankings, and they have backed that up (as Notre Dame learned last year). As for our situation, I think it’s pretty simple, if we only lose one more, we’ll get in. We control our own destiny.

You're correct. The Notre dame loss was actually the playoff game my mistake. So they only played one ranked team all season lost and were ranked #9 with a SOS rated 1.95 (55th of 134).

Whether it is relevant or not is your personal opinion which I indicated you are welcome to but I'm not obligated to share. I personally think the rankings have implications beyond just playoff selection as I explained.
