We're not comparing Pope to Hurley, we're simply saying that UK fans would have wanted Hurley fired before he ever got going.

Let's not act like Hurley has a charming personality. If he took the job in 2024 and didn't get to the E8 in year 2, half the dudes on this board would want him gone. You know I'm right.
I highly doubt UK fans would want Hurley fired, if he was hired in 2018, and we were coming off probation like UCONN was. Also, if he took the job in 2024, with the brand and NIL, an elite 8 in year 2 isn’t a tall order.

If Pope was showing improvement, players weren’t prone to quitting, his substitution weren’t questionable, going through multiple scoring droughts, not to mention unbelievably frustrating recruiting, fans would be more patient. 2 years of the same crap. If he shows improvement this season, some of us might quiet down.

But the exhibition game shown many of the same mistakes. And recruiting hasn’t really shown any improvement either. So far, it’s just the same crap, unfortunately.

If you want a fair comparison then compare Popes first 2 years against another coach in the NIL and current transfer portal era. Can't compare different eras for a honest debate.

Just compare Pope to Texas Techs coach . Elite 8 second year and probably another similar run if Toppin doesn't go down last year.
Wait a minute. You mean you have to consider an injury when evaluating a coach? Not what read on here and this forum is loaded with experts

He wouldn't of been considered for this job back then. If he was he would of been on a short leash for sure and rightfully so. We already had a BG experience so want to avoid that again. Obviously BG also had off the court problems. All things considered the last 2 years haven't been awesome. Above average year 1 and below average last year. Hopefully this year is way better.

Yes he was an All American and their best player. JQ was damaged goods before he even got here. Lowe isn't a All American and a competent coach would have had a backup point guard on his roster.

You've been on RR long enough to know how it goes in here.
Hurley would make it 3 years, but we have too many dudes on this board that would want his head if he went 24-11 with a 2nd round loss. that's exactly what Hurley did two years ago against the 29th ranked SOS, in the NIL era.

Wait, you're saying Dan Hurley wouldn’t have been considered for the UK job in 2024, because of what happened with BCG?

Hurley was considered for the job. Barnhart flew out there and offered him the job, he said no.

Or am I misinterpretIng your post?

Are you saying injuries only matter when the player is an All American?

You think people would want him fired one year removed from a championship?

Yeah just a little off. Implying Hurley wouldn't of been considered for our job here anytime with his resume prior to coaching UCONN.

Exactly, it's not just the W-L, it's the intangibles. PR sucks, recruiting is a joke, players and their agents view our program as a joke, etc etc.

He went out in the 2nd round after winning BACK TO BACK national championships. And they lost by 2 to the eventual NCAA champs. Your defense of Pope is starting to border on the side of fanboyism.

Oh I agree and none of us would have believed he would ever even come close to sniffing a FF at that time. His resume prior to UConn is less than impressive for sure.

It’s why you have to give guys a fair chance, you never know who the next Bear Bryant might be.

Im saying the value between Lowe and Toppin is vast. We just needed a competent back up pg last year but Pope decided not to have a backup pg.
Yeah, Pope screwed that up badly and even though we all know Lowe wasn’t a FF caliber pg, we were much better with him. He’s a jitterbug, very tough to guard and he proved that during the SJ game.

How am I defensing Pope? My comments about Hurley are targeted towards the torch and pitchfork people on here.
As has been said multiple times, if we had Hurley and he went 24-11 and out in the first weekend, this place would go apeshit, just like they are now.
Said a million times, Pope isn’t the guy, but dangit, when we get THE GUY in here, we need to act like adults.

Yeah need a little perspective, there is a difference getting run out in the 2nd round or getting run out after back to back nattys. I would be ok with that as a fan.

Hopefully the next feller will not give us:

Trailing by 10+ points: 17 games
Trailing by 15+ points: 11 games
Trailing by 20+ points: 8 games

That dog still won’t hunt.

You ignore all reality. Just talk about the record. It’s not about the record.

Where were the torch and pitchfork people you reference when Pitino went 36-20 his first two season? Where were they after he went 14-14 year one?

“Trending” wasn’t a thing then. But if it had been everyone knew UK was trending up.

Now even Stevie Wonder can see UK is trending down.

The best advice I can give our next coach, is to never trail, win every game and if you don't, make sure your front yard is made of concrete, drunk people don't usually bring hammer drills and sleeve anchors with FIR SALE signs. (Misspelled on purpose)

It’s understandable for a fan to think if a coach is trailing that much in that many games there must be something seriously flawed with their coaching philosophy.

It’s one thing if it was just a first season issue, but it kept happening. If it keeps happening this season, I don’t think that’s a good coaching trend.

its not never trails....its never always trail
its not win every game....its dont lose all the games

pope sets negative records left and right and people think some uk fans are being unreasonable. as if its not far that uk fans want a coach where we dont get down double digits every 3 of 4 games....

If you're waiting for me to disagree with you, you're going to be there a long time.
Me, Cowboy, Idiot, Paul and about 50 other "pumpers", all agree with you.
We also understand Pope's recruiting sucks, his personality is soft, his interviews are bad, he prolly has a small weenie and he never should have been offered the job.
That's the thing, so many of the torch and pitchfork gang, think we're Pope fans, we're not, we're just hoping he surprises all of us and fixes all those issues, we're giving him a fair shot, while trying to remain positive.
One more Michigan State, or Gonzaga debacle and he will have no friends.

And he’s going to get 3 years to prove himself, what's the problem?
Again, you guys act like he lost every game since he got here.
Now you guys, after saying we should only hire guys that are accomplished, are pining for Jai Lucas and Shertz. Then, when one of these guys is hired, you'll say it was a bad hire and minimize all accomplishments and blow the failures out of proportion, just like you're doing now.
The fault for the Pope hire, lands squarely on Barnhart, not Pope. You cant blame a guy for taking his dream job and betting on himself, but you guys act like he never should have accepted the offer, even though everyone was good with him after year 1.
Y'all need to make up your mind on what you want and what is acceptable.
I don't care who you are, if you have major injury problems, you're going to lose a lot of games when you play the 3rd ranked SOS, at least be fair.
Translation: Shut up until I say so

Nobody would want him fired, if he was coming off 2 national titles, I doubt anyone would go apeshit.
