“We’re Kentucky. We’re always going to be really, really competitive in terms of NIL,” he said. “What we tell recruits is we’re rarely going to live in a place where we offer the most money, because that’s actually not how we want to do this. But we’re always going to be competitive.

“I need to bring in kids that want to be here for more than just the dollar value, because if that’s the only reason, this microscope is too big and you’re gonna have a hard time surviving.”

I interpret that as saying we have plenty of NIL money, but he doesn't want to pay top dollar for the elite talent and would rather spread that money out. I actually think that was the problem last year. Too much money spread out on average players. I guess we'll find out soon for this year.

It’s been pretty obvious that recruits have been using Pope to increase their worth so they can go to coaches they actually want to play for.

And even the guys we’re getting, we’re probably overpaying. Aren’t we paying Zoom almost $3-$4 million or something crazy like that? It seems like we’re paying a Pope tax just to encourage players to want to play for this guy. I’m very curious what the heck Pope is doing to weird these kids out?

this aligns with this analytics in making sure he has his rotation of players

Whatever Zoom is getting is just a guess. A lot of people make grand claims to use as fuel for their complaining.

It sounds to me like he is avoiding complaining about the money available. Is saying we are competitive in NIL but we do not have the funds to just outbid other teams for top end talent.
Let's be honest for a second. With his record at UK so far, would you actually expect him to say "yes, we had a top 3 NIL budget the past few years"? That would basically be calling himself a failure. I don't think there's any doubt we have at least a top 10 budget and probably higher than that. Are there schools who have spent more?.Probably, but I don't think anyone believes Kentucky has a money problem.

I don't think anyone has ever claimed that UK has a money problem. I don't know exactly where we actually rank in available funds and neither does anyone else including Pope.

We are top 10 but there's a difference in college basketball between $22M (UK) and $32M (Duke). Let's hope J Batt helps us out because Barnhart had us fighting with one arm tied behind our backs.

You do realize these numbers and where they might rank are just a guess? I am not claiming to know they are not accurate or at least close but nobody actually knows anything for fact.

If zoom is getting 3 million, another indication that Pope has no clue

We are getting hosed then. Zoom is worth like a million maybe. I know his ranking probably suggests he made that much but I can’t see many schools paying him that, which is why he came back to us would be my guess.

🤦‍♂️ No one and I MEAN NO ONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT!
Yes, those of us concerned about the state of the game (not just where UK ranks) DO understand what he's talking about. He just can't come right out and say it, otherwise you'd ***** even more. The game needs a hard reset, it's the reason high-profile coaches are leaving the game.

J Batt when he fires him next year
I never paid for a seat on the Mark Pope train, but during seasons 1 and 2 I was one of those who always stopped and waved politely with a smile whenever it rolled through town. The UK job is demanding, give him a chance to grow into it is what I kept telling myself. That crap is over as of Pope’s most recent NIL buffoonery. Mark Pope is outmatched and under qualified for the job. Metaphorically only, I’m now that dude in the dirty jeans standing next to the tracks holding rocks in my hands, waiting for the Pope train to come through.

With the annual EXODUS of players now being such a big thing, successful programs are the ones who can REPLACE exits with BETTER players. Money is no GUARANTEE that this will easily or regularly happen, unfortunately.

That is a god awful sales pitch. Absolutely terrible. Has UK not required Mark Pope to work with a PR/public speaking coach? I continue to despise Calipari and his era at UK, but Calipari could at least think on his feet and come up with a sales pitch that worked. Mark Pope is completely inept when it comes to speaking in front of cameras and microphones. Is there no one within the UK administration that is willing to grab the bull by the horns and require Pope receive training/coaching? That sales pitch is embarrassing…
You can't possibly be serious. Are you that big of a gambler and that far removed from the idea of representing your school and earning a degree for free in exchange for play? You're as much of the problem as these greedy *** players.

Get some players who just want to be at UK and pay top dollar for a couple studs.
I'd rather have a really good steak and lobster tail with sub par sides than for all of it to be just average.

Pope's problem is he thinks players are willing to take less to come play for Kentucky because of the prestige, the history, and to be able to wear "the sacred cloth". Kids these days don't care about all that. They want to go play for an exciting, energetic program, while collecting big fat paychecks and then move on to the next big thing.

Pope is still in the mindset of the 80's and 90's where it still meant something to wear the UK uniform and play at Rupp Arena. Unless you were born in Kentucky that doesn't mean as much as it once did.

Agreed. We had too many just okay players and no dudes. Don't have any dudes this year either, at least don't appear to. I think that's always been his problem.

They aren't guesses, but it's not reported either. There's some leaking of information from agents. One of my kids plays soccer with (feel free to laugh at that intro, I did when I typed it) a pretty popular sports agents kid. Good dude. We talk at games a lot. He doesn't "know" either, again because it's not all reported. But these numbers get spread around. It's way more than a guess.
