Mason Williams is a STAR

All about who is getting the most and most crucial minutes. Mason and Alex will get those imo unless zoom gets better. Who starts isn’t a big deal
Guarantee it’s a big deal to players, specifically Zoom. Bench him for a freshman and he will leave, potentially even before the semester ends if it’s done early. Won’t bother me much because I was never crazy about his game but he’s needed this year just due to numbers.

He’s not going to leave. Too much money to lose. He will be fine. I don’t know why everyone freaking out over 2 practice games. He’s trying to find his role in a new system and new stuff being asked of him. He’s a veteran and knew what he was getting into with Wilkins coming too. He will settle in.

I was tooting his horn early on as well after watching his little high school beat prolific prep and the fact that he had the highest percentage of three-point shots during the hundred shots contest beating Milan by one point and Noah by 2. I'd also say that even now as a freshman he is better than Jalen Lowe and perhaps equal to Lamar Butler. He makes good decisions doesn't turn it over much and appears to know the game well
I love him, but he's not as good a defender as Butler. Few guards anywhere are, though ...

Yeah he knew with Wilkins but he sure as hell didn’t expect a 3 star freshmen to potentially send him to the bench.

If you do make the change then I’d wait until the second semester starts just to make sure he won’t bolt. Someone else could be desperate enough to offer him the make up money and a starting spot.

Likewise, I think Garrison did not handle sitting behind Moreno very well last season ...

Haha he can’t go to another team this season. Zoom will start and be fine anyways.

This is broken logic. There have been tons of great college players that were not in high NBA demand. Just as there have been lots of mediocre college players that were in high NBA demand. CBB proficiency and NBA draft stock are different things.
You’re like the media. Take most away and use what you need.

LOL, so you can't be a star in college and not be an NBA caliber guy?
There are plenty of examples of guys that killed it in college and either didn't get to the NBA, or had a cup of coffee in the NBA.
Where is Walter Clayton Jr. Right now? Was he not a star in college? (GL)
Where is Oscar Tshiebwe right now? (GL). Was Oscar a star in college? Yup
Some guys don't have the size, length and/or athletesism to compete at the NBA level, but they can kill it in college.
Oscar is in the NBA

Oscar is in the NBA
But he had to stay in college for five years, go undrafted, and toil away in the G league for years to finally get there. Even after he won the National Player of the Year award, still no NBA teams were interested in drafting him.

You claimed that if Mason was actually star caliber, he’d be in the NBA “next year”. That is just dumb logic, as players like Oscar prove. Tons of great college players haven’t had the draft stock to be one and dones.

There are several million reasons why he might not start over Zoom.

Williams in two exhibition games has shown more poise and skill than Zoom. I would love for Williams to get the lion's share of minutes, especially early to help maximize his effectiveness by post-season play.

I seriously hope it is just a funk that Zoom is in. No way is he that bad.
Yes, zoom is that bad
Exactly the way he played at Washington
Lucky pope hired Mason's dad or he would be playing elsewhere

Exactly! To be fair, all of our guards are trying to settle in, and define roles. Zoom will be just fine.

He’s on his way to become that type of defender I believe. Works soo hard and has a very high IQ. Will take him some time but he’s already ahead of what everyone besides him and his dad thought. Love the kids toughness.

I’m sure he’s under contract and getting paid a ton of money. He’ll need to earn everything but he’s a Vet so he’ll be fine. Kids on his tail though. 😆. Great for Kentucky

We are not getting consistent ball movement with zoom at the point. Williams keeps the offense flowing Pope and staff will look at game film and make the appropriate decision to correct this I hope.

No, he’s in the GL on a 2 way deal. Best rebounder ever, but he’s in the GL, in other words, he’s going to have a cup of coffee in the NBA, he’s not a guy that's going to stick. He was a star in college, but he’s a G League guy.

Then explain it to us.
You said you can't be a star in college if you're not an NBA talent. I gave you examples. Walter Clayton and Oscar T are just two examples, there are many more.
You absolutely can be a star in college and not be an NBA caliber guy.
I don't understand why so many of our fans think you have to have NBA studs on your team to win in college. That's just wrong.
Look at the teams winning titles, they are built with veteran college players. It’s a different game than the NBA.
Also, why are you thinking Mason can't play in the NBA? He's a freshman and he’s way ahead of schedule. He’s very good and his father knows how to get there and thrive.
But please explain what we "don't get".

on a neutral court uk loses by 5-10 points. it was tech's first exhibition game and they ran better stuff all night, got higher quality looks. this uk team is going to get wrecked on the road. every game is losable. diallo/wilkins are just not good enough. the team is supposed to be a great 3 point shoot group....been terrible through two games.
Proclaiming your opinion as fact, doesnt make it actually a fact.
Carry on.

Their 3 point shooting percentage through the 2 exhibitions has been 36.53%. That would’ve been 40th best in NCAA last year and 10th best power conference team. For comparisons sake we were 168th last year.

Both games we’ve been awful in the first half which makes it feel worse
Here we go with those pesky facts again.

I realized after the second game that Zoom is too slow driving through the paint, and not crafty like Williams. The defenses collapse on him quickly as soon as he's in the paint, and he can't manuever around them or overpower them. Coaches need to find other ways to help him be effective. Maybe go and look at his highlight reel from last year to see what worked, rather than trying to make into something he's not.

I know you're going to try some mental gymnastics stuff, but there is only one way to take this. You didn't reply to anyone, you just made this statement without being asked to:

"If he was a star he would be NBA bound next year. Not. Hyperbole is rampant these days. He’s the best we have but come on. Yes he should start and play a big role from what we have seen so far."

You can't change what you said. The first 10 words are the issue, then, when you add the next two words ("next year") it's an even worse statement.

You don't have to be an NBA talent to be a star in college.

And yes, I understand what you're trying to say and that fails too. You’re trying to say our best guard isn't NBA quality, so they suck and you're just wrong.

Here’s the stuff you don’t get. The Op said he IS a star. He is not. Every freshman coming in that IS a star is going to the NBA asap. (AD, Wall, Durant, Flag, etc…) That’s what they want. No gymnastics needed but just didn’t catch the OP. Also I never said he sucked.
If you can try and read my post again I said he was the best guard on our roster. He is NOT a star and he’s not even the best player on our team. You used Oscar as an example which by the way was also NOT a star before he every played a real game. That’s where Williams is. Not yet played a regular season game.
I also never said he would or would not develop into a star. I was using what the OP gave us. You turned it into something you wanted to bloviate about for no reason.

I’ll stick with the OP statement and what I said. He IS not a star. I guess you can read extra words in there if you like.

Actually, the OP said he is a pro and while I disagree with that, he very well could be some day, partly because his dad is one of the better NBA players of our lifetime. Mason has aspects to his game already that most freshmen don't possess.

But, you said you have to be an NBA talent to be a star, that's just not true and I gave examples that prove my point. No, Oscar wasn’t a star until his junior and senior years. He was a NPOY and he’s not an NBA guy, neither is Walter Clayton.

But when you look at Mason and watch him play, saying he looks like he could be a star, is not that far fetched.

Also, you are trying to compare him to genarational talents you don't have to be generational to be a star.

No the OP did by saying he is already a star before playing. If you read the title he says star. Ask calls him a pro in the body. No one knows at this point if he’s a pro or star. Could be one day. Maybe not.

Its early but I think its pretty clear he's the most physically gifted guard we have and it isn't close.
Uh, no. Mason has been awesome in 2 exhibition games and has really shown a poise and ability to play within his game, but Wilkins is also a very physically gifted guard. In fact, both can be equally physically gifted. Mason has a Big East frame while Wilkins has an oily kind of a smoothness to him. Both seem to be playing with energy (Wilkins more so in the TT game). Two young gifted guards.
