I used to live to read the Star Ledger for so many years. Now I haven't read it in so many years I can't remember the last time I had it in my hands.

Same with the NY Post and Daily News. I used to buy each one for work and read it at lunch. Now I just read the internet versions.

The only book I have read in the last year or so was Burglar for Peace by Ted Glick.

There hasn’t even been a Star-Ledger in two years. No one noticed they folded it.

Agree re the Star Ledger; growing up in Union County, it was the staple as a source of news and information.

As I got older and moved north to Bergen County, The (Bergen) Record became that source, until it too died the death of paper media.

Books, am a big John Irving fan, so have read many of his novels (Garp, Hotel New Hampshire, The Fourth Hand, etc.); relatively more recently, A Gentleman in Moscow was a good read.

Am in the middle of a relatively new Irving novel....but it is HUGE! lol. like 1,000 pages....and I am getting too old to stare at that many pages for too long!

I suspect I’m younger than many of you but still like to read the PDF replicas of the Financial Times (best newspaper there is, in my opinion) and WSJ (different since Murdoch acquired it but still good) every day. Subscribe to the NYT, too, but don’t really read it. (Wife does, though.)

Will return to answer on books when I have more time. I did recently re-read Bonfire of the Vanities, however, and it remains fantastic. Re-reading A Man in Full now.

Having retired about two years ago, I think I’ve read more books in that time than I did in the last 20 years. Enjoying more audio-books and a few hard covers:

- “The Everything Store - Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon” by Brad Stone.
- “Being Mortal” Atul Gawinde (Great read if you are dealing with aging parents or making health decisions.
- “Killing Lincoln” Bill O’Reilly (A good complement to visiting the battlefields at Gettysburg)
- “Killing Kennedy” Bill O’Reilly (Great recaps of Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis)

Loved A Gentleman in Moscow and also The Lincoln Highway and The Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. I used to read primarily non fiction but as I’ve gotten older I prefer literary fiction both contemporary and the “great books.” Great writers can tell stories reflecting upon the human condition.

Newspapers…I subscribe to the digital New York Times but scan and selectively read. Also The Morning Call which is a regional paper covering the Lehigh Valley to stay up on local issues.

Read Axios and watch NewsNation as they do a good job with content covering a wide diversity of topics and are non-partisan.

One of my favorite books - fantastic read for anyone that loves historical fiction.
The Boys in the Light - written by Nina Willner - I cannot recommend this book enough especially for anyone that is interested in WWII and the Holocaust. Outstanding research and writing by the author whose father survived it all. You will learn about the Battle of the Bulge and about multiple stories coming together of young US soldiers and the plight of many Jewish families during WWII. Just read it trust me.

I still get the paper edition of The Bergen Record delivered. They stopped the Saturday print edition a few years ago. They moved the news room back to Hackensack for better reporting they said. But honestly even being part of Gannett now I don't see how it can survive.

Used to read the Bergen Record daily, would get it from the driveway before school. Then later would add the New York Post and Daily News at work because somebody brought them in.

Eventually became just the NYP online and now since they went to their paid Sports+ format I don’t really read it. I scroll the headlines and read a few free articles here and there but it’s a void I miss. I refuse to pay for it. Tired of paying for everything that used to be “free”

I have however found a website that gets around the paywalls for most Bergen Record and NJ.com but it does not work for the NYP.

I second this rec. Being the son of a WWII flyer, I’ve read so many WWII books - fiction and fact. Get this book - you’ll love it.

Just finished Steps by Sylvester Stallone. Great read on many levels. Incredible story of his years leading up through the making and debut of Rocky. A poignant look at his perseverance. Amazing they made Rocky for 900 grand. A wonderful motivational/business book for everyone. Never give up on your dream.

Hadn’t heard of this so I checked out a few reviews. Definitely on my list now.

My wife’s father who recently passed at 103 was at the Bulge and continued with US forces into Bavaria where they encountered a concentration camp and into Austria where he met his wife in Linz. She was Italian walking on foot returning home after the war from being forced to work in a factory in then Czechoslovakia. So many amazing stories from WWII.

My new copy of Boys in the Light in hand, I am stretched out on the couch. Sound off on nfl games today. It is a day to read.

I recently finished the fourth book in the Robert Caro series on the life of LBJ. He is 92 and still working on the final volume which covers his time as President. Caro's books are deeply detailed and brilliantly written. I am now re-reading Caro's "The Power Broker" about Robert Moses, who built most of the bridges, highways and parks in New York. It's the best book I've ever read. Prior to that I read "Bad Blood", the John Carreyrou book about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos.

I had a weekend subscription to the Atlanta Journal Constitution but they recently ended the printed newspaper and only exist on line. I have a Sunday subscription to the New York Times.

Thanks for the tip. That was a fascinating and pivotal time in our country. Looking back, Johnson may have been one of the most influential Presidents and did more good than he gets credit. Hands down a better president than JFK in my opinion.

That whole series by Atkinson is phenomenal. The first two books An Army at Dawn (about North Africa) and The Day of Battle (about the Italian campaign) are equally as outstanding.

I've also gotten into Podcasts over the past two years and hooked on one called "Acquired" by Ben Gilbert and Dave Rosenthal...they do 3-4 hour examinations of successful companies, histories, strategies and business models. They are incredibly detailed but presented in a digestible and interesting manner.

I think I've listened to a bunch in the last year including The Home Depot, Disney, Costco, Formula 1, The NFL, Coca Cola, Epic Systems, Indian Premier League Cricket, TSMC, Mars, IKEA, Meta and Novo Nordisk

A complex guy for sure, but very effective at getting things done.
