So I have a question. Do most of you have a daughter playing soccer, and it just so happened that the first few that got on here to post had daughters and that led to others who had daughter's playing soccer to hear about this by word of mouth? I'm surprised those that have sons haven't come on here and joined the conversation at one point or another.
I have an academy-age son. I get to sit back and watch this all unfold. It causes me a little anxiety to think about the future and what might become of it.

At the same time, I enjoy being able to sit back and watch how the club drama unfolds, including which leagues they might be in. Right now, it doesn't affect him for a few years. He has been in academy soccer since a very young age, and there has already been a lot of drama at times, but not so much in his age group.

Just wait, there will be even more chaos next year with the age change coming.

I thought it was a good place to talk and sometimes ***** about local soccer, it just happened to be primarily focused on girls. Someone sent me a post a couple of years ago and I started following end eventually joined the chat a little while back.

I just thought it was a little odd that nobody seemed to talk about the boys side very much. You can follow how the girls teams are doing from parents posts, but not so much the boys. I have a couple of friends who are in rec soccer on the boys side. I can't keep them up to date on how changes are taking place on the male side very much. I thought it would morph into male and female futbol, but it hasn't seemed to do that after some time has passed.

I'm a little surprised that you & TUbla seem to be the only ones with a male child in soccer. I figured there would be a few who had both at one point or another. You and TUbla are the exceptions in two respects, one you were here for TU sports in the first place,(?) and two you both have sons in soccer. It makes me curious as to how the first ones who came here with slight to no interest in TU sports were introduced to this board. I'm guessing word of mouth from one parent to the next. But was that first parent word of mouth, or did they have a slight interest in TU sports?

This thread originally was started (old board) by a poster who had a child wanting to get into soccer. He was asking basic questions about area clubs. The thread has obviously expanded from its inception.

College recruiting kicks into high gear the first week of December. I’ll try from time to time to have some insight on the local schools and which events they are scouting.

We are playing in the Kansas City Current invitational the first week of December instead of the KC ECNL Showcase. My understanding is this is an NWSL showcase event with scouts from the professional clubs in attendance. No idea if there will be college scouts there as well. It’s a loaded four club field (Michigan Hawks, MVLA, Slammers and FC Dallas) with a three game round robin. This is the first NWSL club event of its kind. Should be interesting. Appears many of the NWSL teams are going to have development squads with young players and will be giving colleges competition for the top players coming out of high school

I found this site when I used an AI tool to compile information about the Tulsa youth soccer community, not by word of mouth.

Sometimes I forget how easily stuff like this pops up on google searches, and I'm sure ai makes things like that pop even more frequently. I do searches for info on TU related stuff and this site pops up as often as not. I get 'aggravated' and cuss at the google search,, (because I already know what's on this board) especially if it does not find what I'm looking for. But it would be incredibly useful to me if I didn't know this board. In fact I think it was a google search that turned me onto this board in the first place in 2007.

Just out of curiosity, I wouldn't mind seeing how other users on this thread found this board. I'd like to know how many soccer parents found it through a google search, ai, word of mouth from other soccer parents, word of mouth from friends, etc.

I assume the referee in our game either didn’t understand the rule or its application. He didn’t count out loud nor did his move his arm like you see in basketball to indicate he had started or was even giving a count. Just signaled the violation. Never gave anyone an explanation as to why it was a silent count with zero indications. (I assume he suppose to acknowledge a count has started and is progressing rather than just blowing his whistle).
So the way the mechanics are SUPPOSED to work is the referee counts the 1st 3 seconds in their head and then raises their hand up spread fingers and begins counting back from 5 by folding fingers. There is no requirement for anything audible. I typically count the 1st 3 seconds basketball style as a visual cue because we're dealing with kids and a new law of the game. The centers in my game both did an audible count to go along with the hand signal...again presumably because it's a new law. The referee in your game should have, at a minimum, had his hand raised indicating 5 seconds left and counted backwards on his hand. If I was the coach, or even the goalkeeper, they should have asked where the count was because I didn't see the hand countdown. (If you can ask that question respectfully). Do you know who the ref was? I know there was a kid centering a game at 11am on field 2 who is 15 (same grade as my daughter but a year older). He is a GK for his club side (I think he plays at WSA now). Not sure if this is the game you're referring to but he should definitely know better. The ref at the 9am game on field 2 is one of the better referees in the region (and he knows it so sometimes his ego gets in the way). I would not anticipate him not following those mechanics to a T, but it is new and sometimes we have brain farts. I didn't get a good look at who was centering the 1pm game on field 2 on Sunday.

I actually believe the thread started with "Does anyone know anything about Sheffield United soccer club. My son is thinking about (or maybe it was invited to join a team)." I think the player in question may have been a year behind my son so I was able to discuss some coaches in that 07 age group from TSC specifically (and at the time TSC wasn't a dumpster fire from an organizational standpoint). I did know a couple of the Sheffield coaches.

This thread had some real nice discussions about the pitfalls of club soccer in the US and the traps some of the different orgs were falling into. Discussions on different coaches as I think most of us on here have gone through at least 1 club change in the time this thread has been active (from the original Youth Soccer Question thread). I think the breadth of experience that all the parents have been through probably has helped inform some others who might happen by and read the thread figure out fits for their kids in their soccer journeys.

And I've also enjoyed meeting a couple of you all IRL out on the fields. If you know I'm on one of your kids' games, please stop by and say hi afterwards...just be slow in approaching so I don't think you're going to go all "Cheeseburger" on me

I've heard that the NWSL is also looking to develop a girls' counterpart to MLS Next which might actually be part of the MLS Next organizational/financial backing structure but the branding would include the NWSL to market to girls specifically. In watching some of the NWSL games, this has actually come up a few times.

I don’t know who he was. I asked the AR on my side about the count and why there was no visual or verbal actions by the center. His response “don’t worry about it”. Game was 5-0 so it didn’t really matter other than instructional. I did get a chuckle out of it. Hispanic crew

I'm an ITS junkie but this has become the most interesting thread for me to follow because of my son's involvement in soccer and now with me refereeing some of y'alls kids in their games.

Sucking up to those four clubs would be a great place to start. If you can get Michigan Hawks, Slammers, MVLA and FC Dallas to switch organizations others would surely follow. Assume I will know more after the KC trip.

I know who you're talking about now, at least in terms of the crew...they always work together and they have a good rapport. They're actually all very good referees and they will let the players play. The newness of this law still has some referees wondering how strict they need to be on it and how to go about it.

Man, that would be pretty interesting. That would significantly reduce the ECNL's huge advantage in girls' soccer bigly.

Would the NWSL clubs start covering the costs of travel, training, coaching, and uniforms, like the MLS academies do? That could be interesting.

If this brings more people to TU sports, then that's great. I took a group of people to a TU soccer game, and they suggested that we should attend more games. I also took mothers who said they had no idea how physical older soccer was. Hey, take the wins where you can?

There are people with different dynamics.

GW dad still hasn't fully addressed the JM deal. It is obvious something happened since he isn't involved and appears to be doing only Technico now. It was also odd how it felt like he was going away in Portugal for a while, only for him to reappear abruptly. Super odd.

I have a feeling that Lawpoke knows more, and it isn't pretty.

I received more information on the KC Current showcase this evening. The only affiliation the showcase has with the NWSL is the host. The Showcase is being held in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Soccer final four and final. Same location and same weekend. The Showcase games will be part of the College Cup weekend. Should be interesting.

There’s really nothing salacious there. JM and Greenwood were at odds over various issues involving the running of the academy. Those issues grew to a point where the parties could no longer work together. JM has had ties to Portugal youth academies for years dating back to his time a Blitz and TSC. Stefan was to run Technico while JM did his soccer abroad journey. When Stefan left, JM had no choice but to come back and keep Technico running.

Hopefully the two parties can one day set aside their differences. Their relationship should be mutually beneficial. Greenwood with the MLS Next academy and Technico privately training many of their players.

The KC Current are a buncha badass women. I'm pretty sweet on #5 on the backline. I went to the season opener against Portland back in March. Froze my *** off. Had to buy a $100 hoodie so I didn't die a popsicle death. Going back for the playoffs since the Royals didn't score a wild card. Awesome venue, by the way.

One of my best friends lives in KC and he's not a soccer fan at all but has been to a couple of games for the Current and said the stadium is fantastic. He lives like 5-10 minutes from Children's Mercy Park and I'm pretty sure he hasn't been to a Sporting KC game yet.

Also on this...they need to move this around IMO. There are so many great soccer specific venues in the US now it would be easy to move it. St Louis City Park would be another one where they could host both. There are tons of great facilities in St. Louis where the 4 teams could train. And the soccer culture in St Louis would support the event. Columbus, Cincinnati, Austin, KC, Denver, Dallas would all be great venues to host. Even DC, NY/NJ would be good venues to host as well.

Heck, college hockey has figured it out and they move around the countries. I believe this year's Frozen Four will be in St. Louis (let's go BU).

Yes. The College Cup is being played in the Current stadium. The club showcase games are being split between the stadium and adjacent training fields. December soccer in KC can be dicey weather wise

KC weather is so unpredictable. I was at Game 7 of the World Series in 2014 in KC. Tailgating in shorts and a George Brett t-shirt. By the time I went in the stadium with my SRO ticket, I was sporting jeans and a TU fleece. And I was still cold.

I think that's the midwest in general. I remember a student housing conference TU hosted back in 1995 (or maybe 1996) and we had 500 students from around the region attending. On the Friday of the conference, the temp at 2:00pm was 79 degrees (mid November) and by 10pm that night it was 26 and snowing. The student who came from Texas Pan American (somewhere down around Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley) were playing in the snow in their shorts. Most of them had never seen snow before according to a couple of the students I had talked to.

I think the 1st or 2nd year I was in Tulsa, there was a 4 day stretch where the temps went from 80 degrees on Sunday to 20 and 10 inches of snow on Tuesday and back to 80 and sunny by Thursday. My friends who had left for the week (over Spring break) didn't believe me that we had 10 inches of snow.

That day in question was Nov '95. The only reason I remember it b/c I had a few beers that wonderful day (typical LEC story) and caught a ride down to the Indian Bowl in Muskogee for the first round of the 6A playoffs. Too bad Muskogee didn't have hoodies for sale that night. I have no idea how we made it home. The snowflakes were literally blinding. Pretty sure Toonces was driving.

So JM was a good coach and trainer, but not a for-profit academy administrator?

He did burn bridges at two training facilities at Scheels and BA, right? Seemed like constant chaos.

Was it money issues?

JM is in good standing with Scheels Sports Complex. We actually had a really good meeting with Greenwood. Greenwood has teams entered in our Academy league. We just don't have room for them since we host all of TSC's games, Most of Blitz's and NEOFC RL games along with the 60 academy games we have each week.

I stand corrected. I had heard they had issues with them coordinating training there.

I wish they were playing in the league. It would make it more competitive in a few groups.

Some of their teams really, really suck, though.

Cup finals are Nov 1 and 2. How does that work?

Apparently, there were no weekends / dates that could be agreed upon.

What sucks is: We could beat Energy and tie them in points. If we had them on GD, we could go on to Finals. But I think they are gonna advance now.

There is only one team from each group that advances, so looking at your standings the only team that can advance is Sting Royal.

The issue with Greenwood in BA was the agreement for them to train out there were the U13 age groups and above and they started bringing out U12s and below...frequently. Since they never actually had a signed agreement, it was more a gentleman's handshake agreement until the written agreement could be finalized, BA backed out before that could ever happen (that's what I was told by someone in the know at BASC). I don't know that that was all JMs doing.

We all know quality training facilities for soccer in Tulsa are few and far between, especially when you consider Tulsa's size and the number of kids involved in youth soccer. And there are even fewer entities committed to being involved in maintaining those facilities at a high level. I mean look at the old Union SC/Tulsa Nationals. It still exists and they play on fields at the Boevers Complex with little to no grass. Mohawk is a city owned facility and the city is so short sighted on the potential of that complex, they don't maintain it (not that anyone wants to drive up there 2-3 times a week to train). Metro Tulsa has the fields in the drainage ditch off 41st and 169...those fields are usually pretty good quality and certainly good enough to train and I don't think anyone uses those fields (on the record at least) outside of weekend games. All Star is gone (if you've been by lately the fences have been torn out and they're doing some work on the perimeter but I don't know what).

TBH, there probably needs to be another complex in the south part of Tulsa since that seems to be where the majority of players are based and where teams want to be. (BTW, I'm doing games in Bixby this weekend as a favor to the assignor who I worked an adult league game last night. The fields out there are pretty nice, there's just not enough of them).

There are a lot of players in Owasso and Bartlesville, too. Mohawk is 20-25 mins for most people in this town. It could be so much better. Whiteriver Fish Market needs to go all in on a sponsorship.

There is only one team from each group that advances, so looking at your standings the only team that can advance is Sting Royal.
Ah i didn't realize only one could make it. I thought it was top 2.

We are the group of death lol
