Pretty on camera only goes so far in everyday life. If she's that petty that she used football against him as leverage to get divorced, she can try to find a guy that wants to put up with her bullsht. There will be plenty because she has money and fame.

It's called strategy/gamesmanship. Make her think it was her idea. Makes him look better to family and friends when he's "OK, but disappointed" with the decision.
