They could have done worse. I think this move is also part of Fulmer taking over at AD. The guy has won wherever he goes, and will probably only coach for a few more years. The timing of Kiffin leaving just killed Tennessee

And they need someone who the NCAA can look at and say, "OK, they ran off the adolescent rule breakers."

Trading a brash, dynamic recruiter and sketchy coach for a boring recruiter and stubborn, boring, and fundamentally solid coach.

But, according to my scientific sample of 1 UT fan I just polled, the fans are going to be PISSED.

I told him it was the "safe, logical hire" and that it was a good one given the circumstance. I did not get a receptive response to that statement.

Now I know what every other SEC fan felt like when they told me they liked Croom so much and thought he was a great for our program.

and, despite what some think, I think the guy is a pretty good coach. He did more at Duke than anyone's done since Spurrier was there.

He should get the best type of students-athletes willing to go to Duke plus coach them up when they get there.

He's clearly a solid coach if he has good talent, so I would expect this to result in an improvement over the couple of years. But then they're going to be stuck with a coach that they know is not recruiting at a high level, but they can't fire him b/c he will have been successful for a couple of years (and plus his classes will probably look decent, just not good).

Ultimately, the AD just signed his own pink slip. You can't keep your job as the AD at UT by hiring coaches fired by UM. His one chance is that providing UF cannot simply reload, I guess UT has enough talent that with Cutcliffe's coaching, they should have a legitimate shot at the East next year?

...but this is a dud hire to me.

#1) The man was fired by Ole Miss.
#2) 4-8 and 5-7 at Duke.

UT should've gone out and gotten themselves a Dan Mullen type guy, a successful coordinator at a good school. When Muschamp turned them down, they abandoned that route. Mistake. I agree with Shmuley that they panicked. Nutt is a much better coach, and he probably would've gone.

On another note I like Nutt and think he is great for the UM program.

that winning 5 games at Duke is basically unheard of, right?

Since Spurrier left after 1989:

1994 - Fred Goldsmith (8)
2009 - Cut (5 wins)

That's it. They've won 5 or more games TWICE n the last 20 years. I'd say Cut did a helluva job there.

Cut talks not working out I hear. Rumor is AD on his way to Chicago to talk with Lovie Smith. Check out tonybasilio.com for good info on situation. Click on tony's blog. Not saying it is right info, but up to date rumors i guess
