never knew. I bet they have to have their own tees that are closer to the pin though.

The USGA tends to frown on that. Plus I think the women raised all hell about the heat. The only thing worse than one woman bitching about the heat, is a field of 150 (75 of which are lesbians) bitching about it.

I would be suprised if they ever got anything besides a qualifier.

who works grounds crew there for a summer job found 6 or 7 balls from that tourney a couple of weeks ago. Thought that was pretty cool

I believe they are changing out their greens right now.

But the players loved Old Waverly in 1999, but I guess that happens when the US Open record for a round is broken three times in the same tournament.

Currently they are about the shut the course down and change from bent grass to champion on the greens. By doing this it will be very hard for the USGA to bring another Open there. The USGA tends to like bent grass better than a burmuda hybrid.

changed if the scoring was a problem.....There are certainly things they could do to make the course more challenging.....I mean, they could hire Randy Quaid to come in and be the goalie like he was on CaddyShack II.....Seriously though, they could redesign some of the holes to make the course harder.......

Bent grass is a cold weather grass. For it hold up in the Mississippi heat, it must be watered constantly (as in every hour). This in turn makes the greens very very soft. Players can simply take take dead aim at the pin and the ball will stick. As noted below, they are changing from bent to bermuda, but that would make them even less likely to get a USGA event.

If I remember correctly there wasn't enough rain to really get the rough up to par as well. I worked with the ESPN crew during that tourney and they said the course was great, the players liked it, but the scoring was too low for an Open.

Typical Mississippi luck, they moved the date of the Open up that year as well to try and beat the heat, only to get an early heatwave.

the PGA came to them. They apologizied because the PGA wanted the rough cut, not waverly. Additionally, the course isn't closed. They are changing greens to champion dwarf bermuda and should be completed in 90 days playable in Sept. They have temporary greens set up now. IF they grow the rough and narrow the fairways, then you want see near the scores. The hard rough out there now defenetly costs you a stroke penalty, which the PGA wants.

yes it was warm. Otherwise it was a great event.... Not sure that West Point wanted anymore...This event took a Hugh commitment from their citizens.

Those Gals can hit the ball.

why would it make it less likely to get a USGA event? I have never heard of such. Hell, Bethpage Black's greens weren't bent grass but they played the men's us open there. Annandale chanaged their greens from bent to a hybrid or something to make the course more difficult and it worked.

needs to put more undulations into their new greens..Champions makes a great putting surface..
The pros, men and ladies, shoot low scores on flat, good putting greens..

just look at the scoring differential at TPC Southwind since they changed to Champions..You can definately keep them much firmer..
