FOOTBALL: VHSL RELEASES FIRST REGIONAL RANKINGS

Here is the first set of Virginia High School League (VHSL) regional football rankings, released on Monday. Keep in mind that this season will be much different than any other, as likely more teams than not will not play a full ten-game season, games lost on some teams' schedules due to COVID-19 or other issues with their opponent could affect strength of schedule in ways that are out of their control.
A reminder that the top eight schools make the postseason. Numbers will be released weekly by the League office, concluding with the official playoff brackets on Sunday, November 7th. Records are those posted by the league based on games officially recognized.

CLASS 4, REGION B:

1) Dinwiddie (4-0, 29.0)
2) King George (5-0, 27.6)
3) Varina (5-0, 26.8)
4) Matoaca (5-1, 26.333)
5) Chancellor (2-1, 24.333)
6) Patrick Henry (4-2, 22.833)
7) Powhatan (4-2, 22.5)
8T) Atlee (4-2, 22.0)
Hanover (3-2, 22.0)
---
10) Monacan (3-3, 20.667)
11) Eastern View (3-2, 20.0)
12) Spotsylvania (3-3, 19.5)
13) Huguenot (1-4, 18.6)
14) Courtland (1-4, 17.0)

THE BREAKDOWN: Again. Strength. Of. Schedule. Dinwiddie takes the lead in this rugged region, but the Generals have two fellow unbeatens breathing down their neck. The defending region champion Foxes are listed at 5-0, so we're looking to see if their fifth win was a forfeit from Caroline last week, since they're 14-14 tie with Lafayette from August 27th is, at last check, officially still "suspended". Matoaca, if they can win out, could create a top four separated from the rest of the pack, giving them a home game in the opening round. Chancellor's ranking is a bit deceiving given their 2-1 record. They go to King George Friday, then host Caroline and Culpeper before finishing a seven-game schedule at James Monroe. We do not believe there will be any
special dispensation given for a seven-game schedule versus a nine or ten-game, save the usual use in tiebreaking situations. The Atlee/Hanover game November 5th? It looms large, but three teams are right behind them ready to pounce.

ELSEWHERE:

Region 4A: 1) King's Fork 28.0, 2) Hampton 26.5, 3) Warhill 24.667

Region 4C: 1) Heritage 29.429, 2) Kettle Run 25.857, 3) Tuscarora 25.571

Region 4D: 1) Western Albemarle 29.0, 2T) GW-Danville & Salem (Lynchburg) 25.8 (Louisa is in 6th, 23.286)

I think the Foxes game will be a tie. The Generals take care of business, they will be fine. Varina will make a run in points but Highland Springs already has 2 L. Varina will have a hard time making up 2 points.

Heritage, Hopewell were 2 big wins for the Generals. They will have at least 8 wins each and they get 2+ classification bonus points making them C4 when computing points

VHSL FOOTBALL REGION RANKINGS: WEEK 10

Two weeks to go, lots of games in flux, many teams looking at a nine or even eight-game season rather than ten, and much more. It's a Virginia High School League (VHSL) football playoff race unlike any other. Twenty-six teams are currently in, and plenty more still in the fight for the postseason. Here's the latest regional standings with a deep dive into what's ahead over the next twelve days.....

NOTE: The top eight teams make the postseason in each region.

CLASS 4, REGION B:

1) Dinwiddie (30.0, 6-0, vs Meadowbrook, 0-7, Class 5)
2) King George (28.857, 7-0, vs Spotsylvania, 5-3, Class 4)
3) Varina (28.286, 7-0, vs Patrick Henry, 6-2, Class 4)
4) Matoaca (27.75, 7-1, at Hopewell, 4-2, Class 3)
5) Patrick Henry (24.875, 6-2, at Varina, 7-0, Class 4)
6) Chancellor (23.8, 3-2, vs Culpeper County, 4-5, Class 3)
7) Powhatan (22.875, 5-3, at Midlothian, 7-0, Class 5)
8) Spotsylvania (22.625, 5-3, at King George, 7-0, Class 4)
---
9) Atlee (22.5, 5-3, vs Highland Springs, 6-2, Class 5)
10) Monacan (21.75, 4-4, vs Clover Hill, 2-6, Class 5)
11) Hanover (21.714, 3-4, vs Henrico, 2-6, Class 4)
12) Courtland (20.714, 3-4, vs Eastern View, 4-4, Class 4)
13) Eastern View (19.5, 4-4, at Courtland, 3-4, Class 4)

BREAKDOWN: Lots to digest here. We start at the top, where Dinwiddie loses half a point to King George and Varina, and, if all three unbeatens prevail Friday, there will likely be a new #1, and it could be Varina by the narrowest of margins, thanks to facing a 6-2 Patrick Henry team, who wants to hand the Blue Devils their first loss and see if it will be enough to threaten Matoaca for the fourth seed. The Warriors, meanwhile, have a tough Central District battle at Hopewell, who is fighting for playoff position in Region 3A. Chancellor, despite only playing five games, jumps back into the top eight with a win last week, but the two teams below them, Powhatan and Spotsylvania, each have a chance to pull upsets of unbeatens and not only overtake Chancellor, but threaten Patrick Henry's #5 seed should they fall at Varina. Now, to the craziness at the bottom of the top eight. Hanover loses, falls from 7th to 11th, while Atlee won, and still fell from 8th to 9th. Five teams are within 1.161 points of each other. Monacan and Hanover will be favored this week, hoping that neither Powhatan, Spotsylvania, nor Atlee can pull off upsets. Longshots Courtland and Eastern View play, essentially, an elimination game Friday.

ELSEWHERE:

REGION 4A: 1) King's Fork 27.714, 2) Hampton 26.875, 3) Warhill 26.75
REGION 4C: 1) Heritage-LC 28.375, 2) Kettle Run 27.889, 3) Broad Run 27.5
REGION 4D: 1) GW-Danville 28.714, 2) Western Albemarle 28.625, 3) Salem 28.143, 5) Louisa 26.125

FOOTBALL: VHSL Region Standings: Week 11 Presented By Luck Chevrolet

We've made it to the final week of the regular season in high school football, a season filled with twists and turns, and we're sure more to come. Let's take a deep dive into the latest standings, find out who's in, who needs to win this week and more, all presented by our friends at Luck Chevrolet in Ashland! Remember, the top eight teams in each region reach the playoffs, and teams who have clinched postseason berths are noted with an asterisk (*). Also of note, when we get to State Semifinal Saturday on December 4th, Region A and Region B champions will face each other, while Region C and D champions will square off.

CLASS 4, REGION B:

1) Dinwiddie* (30.286, 7-0, vs Thomas Dale, 7-1)
2) King George* (30.25, 8-0, vs Courtland, 4-5)
3) Matoaca* (29.0, 8-1, vs Meadowbrook, 0-7)
4) Varina* (28.125, 7-1, vs Highland Springs, 7-2)
5) Patrick Henry* (26.667, 7-2, vs Mechanicsville, 2-7)
6) Powhatan (25.222, 6-3, vs Cosby, 3-6)
7) Chancellor (24.875, 5-3, vs James Monroe, 4-5)
8) Hanover (23.125, 4-4, vs Atlee, 5-4)
--
9) Monacan (23.111, 5-4, vs Manchester, 6-2)
10) Spotsylvania (22.889, 5-4, vs Caroline, 0-8)
11) Atlee (22.444, 5-4, vs Hanover, 4-4)
12) Courtland (21.556, 4-5, vs King George, 8-0)

ELSEWHERE: We told you back in August that this would be the rough, rugged, crazy, and most competitive region in our area. We'll argue it's the best region in Virginia. The top five teams are in, and Powhatan is on the cusp of getting their first trip to the playoffs since 2016. If the Indians win, it's down to two spots and six teams. First, our "High School Football Friday Night" showdown on Rejoice 101.3 FM/990 AM and here on our website between Hanover and Atlee is not mathematically a "win and get in" scenario. Here's how wacky it is: Hanover would gain two points should Monacan knock off Manchester, but would rather Manchester win, because, with a Hawk victory over the Raiders and a Lancers win, Hanover would move forward to next week. It's mathematically possible for Monacan to move as high as #6, should Cosby upset Powhatan and James Monroe upset Chancellor. James Monroe is playing for a home playoff game in Region 3B, so they have serious motivation. Spotsylvania is a victim of a bad final opponent: winless Caroline. They'll need a win, Hanover and Monacan losses, and some upsets including Fluvanna over Albemarle, for a chance. Atlee and Courtland actually have higher ceilings than Spotsylvania. And if Courtland hands King George their first loss of the season? All bets are off.

ELSEWHERE:

Region 4A: 1) King's Fork 28.625, 2) Hampton 28.333, 3) Warhill 26.889
Region 4C: 1) Broad Run 29.222, 2) Kettle Run 28.889, 3) Heritage-LC 28.667
Region 4D: 1) GW-Danville 29.5, 2) Salem 29.222, 3) E.C. Glass 28.556
