This was the day a third and deciding game between Rutgers and Princeton in 1869 was to take place. Rutgers had defeated Princeton 6-4 on November 6th. Princeton hosted Rutgers on November 13th and shut them out 8-0. The schools then shut down and students went home for Thanksgiving. When they returned, a Princeton delegation visited Rutgers and set the deciding game for November 27 back at College-avenue grounds which would have used Rutgers rules from the first game.
But it never came off. First, the Princeton president, backed by its faculty, prevented the football team from getting on the train to New Brunswick and later in the day the Rutgers president forbade his team from playing.
America's first intercollegiate football season ended with each team with one victory and no clear cut champion for the year. The students on both sides were very disappointed but also expressed interest in this thing called "foot-ball" for next season.
