It’s less than 1%.

A highly infectious disease with a 1% death rate is something we have not dealt with in a VERY long time here. I keep seeing that figure thrown out there like it's supposed to make everything all right. Its ysually thrown out there by the everybody is going to get it anyway people. Ok, lets look at that. That's 30,000 dead Mississippians and over 3,000,000 dead Americans.

Much less. Calm down. Almost all of us will be fine.

So if you went to Home Depot today and someone tested positive who had previously entered said Home Depot tested positive within how many days should you be alarmed? 1 day, 2 days, 3 houra?

Actually 14 days. Just saying.

How is it that liberals hate fascist dictators but love tons of aspects abt fascist dictatorships.

Honestly?

So you are ok with them tracking you in the name of covid 19 but you aren’t ok with the NSA listening into phone conversations in the name of terrorism?

This is just so absurd.

In this scenario, nobody is actively tracking me in the name of a novel pandemic. I am choosing to participate in public and agreeing to be contacted if necessary. That isnt actively tracking.

Here are some key differences between a restaurant taking your phone number and the nsa listening in on your calls.
I can't believe I just typed out that sentence, this is so absurd.

- I choose to engage in a public setting by eating at a restaurant and following laws/procedures is part of that act of choice.
- phone conversations have an expectation of privacy when they are made in a private setting.
- we know we will potentially be contacted and agree to participate when a phone number is given at a restaurant.
- we don't know if we are being listened to by the nsa and haven't agreed to participate in such an act.
- the phone number is only looked at by the government if there is reason to help keep you healthy.
- the nsa listens in on every call.

Even if you want to argue some of those distinct and important differences, what all this ultimately comes down to is an expectation of privacy.
The idea that there is an expectation of privacy is one that applies in some but not all situations. I do not think that when someone chooses to enter the public realm, they have an expectation of privacy. This can be backed up with decades of examples in courts and societal behavior.
Conversely, I do think there is an expectation of privacy when not in a public setting. This would include phone calls made and received in private.
The exception is for law enforcement, but such an exception must be narrow in scope, meaning law enforcement can listen in if they have a concern of illegal activity occurring and have gained permission to listen for that specific issue.
What I don't accept is that all calls should be recorded and run thru programs to pull out key words and phrases for analysis. Nothing close to thst should be allowed since it violated the expectation of privacy we each have.

There ya go. That helps explain why I hate dictstors but love their policies...or whatever the 17 you accused me of.

It's almost like they want to know who may be sick so they can track them in order to slow the spread of the virus. No wait. That's just what they want us think.

This is correct and one of the two reasons why I’m unlikely to eat at restaurants for awhile.

Back before Covid, when I would go to the Central Station Grill and log in to their wifi, it would greet me by name. I've never given it my name. If you have a smart phone you need to alter your concept of privacy. I routinely do title research in various Chancery Clerk's offices around the state. Grenada County has been requiring everybody to sign in as they enter the courthouse. Name and phone number, please. It takes about a minute per person. Wouldn't you like to be notified if you had been exposed?

It is also spread by getting it on your hands and then touching your face, rubbing your eyes, picking your nose.

If you can't see the difference from being able to contact you to let you know you may have been exposed and the NSA listening to your phone calls, there is really no help for you.

When South Korea reopened its bars and a bunch of people got infected, they were able to trace 19 infections back to 1 guy who went barhopping on the first night the bars were reopened.

If the purpose of contact tracing is to test everyone who may have come into contact with an infected person, then it makes more sense, doesn't it? If you test negative, they don't need to worry about where you have been since.

I have to ask. What if a customer refuses to give their personal info like name and contact number?

They don't eat. Let em have takeout as an option.

I'm not for or against this policy, but it just isn't a tough concept to understand.

Soooo..... what if you are a white owned business and tell them they cannot stay unless they give you the info and they are African American?

You are creating a situation where you push race into the discussion.
I don't know why, but I have a few guesses, and none of them put you in a good light.

The patrons can be black, white, Asian, Latino, or whatever other color/ethnicity/culture/religion we want to pick in this ****-*** hypothetical.

If there is a rule that a restaurant must get each visitor's contact info, then the visitors can't sit down to eat if they don't give the info.

It doesn't need to be racially controversial since it isn't race based. You brought race into the discussion.

In enforcing this edict seems to be problematic.

I'm afraid that unless there is a civil fine for giving false information what's to prevent patrons from giving false info to the waiter? At the end of the day, the customer log will have 20 Donald Duck's, 5 W.E. Cheatthems and 3 Wiley C Coyotes.

How exactly is the "death rate" calculated? In other words, what is the exact formula for calculating the "death rate?"

Also, where do the numbers used to calculate the "death rate" come from? Are those numbers only estimates, or are they actually real tabulated data?

Does anybody know?

You are creating a situation where you push race into the discussion.
I don't know why, but I have a few guesses, and none of them put you in a good light.

The patrons can be black, white, Asian, Latino, or whatever other color/ethnicity/culture/religion we want to pick in this ****-*** hypothetical.

If there is a rule that a restaurant must get each visitor's contact info, then the visitors can't sit down to eat if they don't give the info.

It doesn't need to be racially controversial since it isn't race based. You brought race into the discussion.

Oh how convenient for you. You know good and well the answer to my question. I could have also said Asian American, Hispanic American, illegally in the Country Hispanics and/or Latinos, illegally in the country Asians or Europeans.

Apparently Covid-19 deaths are the worst thing in the world, with no comparable cause of death and people’s rights need to be trampled on to keep YOU safe, but abortion deaths are just fine because “we cannot trample on the woman’s right to choose death for that human being growing inside of her.”

Again, how convenient.

Apparently some people don’t see the irony of allowing an establishment to determine who can enjoy their services for one aspect but not for another aspect that they deem wrong.
Speaking of, I wonder why we don’t trace people for HIV. Now that’s pretty much a death sentence and no one thinks about that virus anymore.

Remember the old signs in store front windows:
“I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.”

I guess some people can’t see the similarities.

I believe ANYONE has the right to be served without giving personal info to the business owner who has been directed by the State to collect such info. If they are refused service, they have the right to claim whatever reason they deem fit and have it settled in court if necessary. I may not agree with them on their reasoning, but I still see it as their right. And that was my point!

What the 17 are you even saying g with this line of thinking? You sarcastically say its convenient I answered how I did, but I don't know why.
You also accuse me of knowing the answer to your question, as if I didn't already answer your question.

I directly answered your question. Ill say it again- the precaution is not race based and the restaurant should turn the customer away(or offer to-go service).

Spell out for me what I am not answering or how I am wrong. I seriously don't understand.

It is something that we fortunately have not had to deal with for a long time, but it is also something that is inevitable, at least with the current state of technology/medicine w/r/t viruses.

There is a lot of bad **** in the world and we have been on an incredible string of good fortune, some of that we've earned, some of that has just been good luck. The problem is we have apparently begun to believe that we can prevent anything bad form happening and that's just not true. We are going to at least have a lot of tragic deaths or a financial depression that causes a lot of deaths. If we continue on the current course and don't get lucky with developing a vaccine or a treatment that makes the virus non-lethal, we are going to get both.

1- it isnt the establishments that made this rule. Your comment is phrased in a way that suggests you think it was created by establishments.

2- the establishment is not deeming anything 'wrong'. They aren't passing judgement. Again, your post seems to indicate you don't understand the policy.
Restaurants aren't passing judgement, they are following a rule for re-opening.

3- holy 17, why is this cesspool of thought allowed to flourish on here?! You seriously just questioned why we aren't testing people at restaurants for HIV?!
That isnt being done because it isnt the late 80s and nobody(so I thought) thinks you can 'catch the aids' from sitting near an infected person.
If you are serious with this question, you are a 17ing moron. If you are joking with this question, it isnt a good point to make in jest because it is so dumb.

The grasping at straws that is going on in this thread is half funny and half sad. Its a few people claiming a slippery slope and trying to tie a safety policy in with historical mistreatment of minorities.

This rule is not in effect to discriminate against protected classes. It is in effect to reduce a novel virus that has created a pandemic. The rule applies to anyone in or not in a protected class.
Hopefully you and bruiser will st17u now, but I could instead see you latching onto something I've said and running with it in an absurd way.

HIV isn't a death sentance anymore and we do trace it.

Currently, I know exactly zero people who have died of the Wuhan virus, and I know zero people who have had it.

I keep hearing about a death rate of 1%. I wonder how accurate that is.

How exactly is the "death rate" calculated? In other words, what is the exact formula for calculating the "death rate?"

Also, where do the numbers used to calculate the "death rate" come from? Are those numbers only estimates, or are they actually real tabulated data?

Does anybody know?
I know several who have had it and several who have died, two this week. Count your blessings.

I love me some candy but I'll have to stop buying the candy that kills people in 3 weeks. Which one is that btw? Probably should be pulled from the shelf.
