With all the comparisons to the 1999 team, I just recently made a connection on how the indians kept us out of Atlanta for the second straight season.

I was listing to Finebaum after the Collins interview and he got off track laughing at a caller about Georgia's history. Somehow he got off on Mike Dubose - like giving him a contract extension after the 1999 season. I had forgotten that Dubose crxxmed Alabama. His lone winning season was 1999.

Then Finebaum pointed that he beat Florida twice that year, the first time on account of a missed XP. I only remember that game being one of the best games I watched that decade and Florida had no answer for Alexander off the left tackle (Chris Samuels, I believe). The win snapped Florida's 30 game home win streak.

But here's a clip to relive the moment...

We would've also had to beat Arkansas for that to matter....Bama would've been 6-2 if they lost to Florida, as were we.

Bama also should've lost to LSU that year

LSU got stopped on the goal line as time ran out when Josh Booty stupidly decided to run for a TD instead of passing to a wide open guy in the back of the end zone. Booty got stuffed and the clock ran out, and Bama won by 6 points. If Bama loses to Fla and LSU like they should've, then we are in Atlanta for the second year running. Damn Indians.

I'd like to see the phantom hold in the 1999 game against Bama. As I recall the score was only 13-7 at the time and Pig had a huge punt return to get it inside their 20. There was a holding call and the ball was sent back to our 30. We punted and Bama got a late TD. Had the hold not happened and we managed to get a TD (or even a FG) the whole game changes.

They were skating on thin ice every week. My point is that that loss would have changed the second half of their season.

What hold? The SEC admitted to blowing the call the next Monday.

The Indians aren't always bad. If Clint Stoerner doesn't trip over his own shoes and put the ball on the ground in 1998 against Tennessee we wouldn't have gone that year. If they had won, it wouldn't have mattered that we beat them the next week. Although I think that was more the Indians looking out for Tennessee's national championship than us winning the West.
