1st Q 3:45 mark- How you like this series, especially the 4th down call.

We had no choice with Van Buren. And he wasn't very good at all when we had to play him. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if he came up with a more modern passing game and pass defenses in MD than KT saw in MS. And we do bring him in for short yardage situations, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. One problem we have is the games to "get him experience" in aren't the SEC games. And all of our OOC games were in September when he was even less ready than he is now. I can make a case that leaving Thompson in for a series after he got the 4th down conversion on the Florida side of the field could have potentially cost us the ballgame. That was a complete waste. And it's not a stretch to think Shapen in that series might have at least gotten us into FG range. You just can't afford to waste a series in an SEC game to "get experience" for the true FR QB.

Okay, I'm obviously not getting across what I am trying to say, so I give.

Apparently the seemingly simple adjustments I was hoping for aren't going to happen anyway, so I hope Shapen turns it around. I hope KT is happy running up the gut every play and that he comes back next year.

Basketball starts November 5th. Can't wait.

No, I understand what you're saying. It's just that SEC games isn't the time to do it. And, if what another poster has said is right, Thompson does have the option to pass and just falls back to the run because that's what he's most comfortable with. The key for his development is going to be what he and the coaches do in spring and summer practice, not whether he gets a handful of snaps this fall. He needs to only get snaps when he can help us win today. And that's pretty much short yardage situations.

Okay. I would still roll him out once in a while.

3rd and 3 from their 42 yard line- Kamario runs for 4 yards.

1st down from their 39- Kamario runs for 6 yards.

2nd down- Kamario runs for 2 yards

3rd down and 2- Kamario runs for 1 yard.

4th down and 1- Shapen looses a yard. Turnover.

Capable good running backs without a carry. Plus take out the 230lb QB, and bring back in Blake Shapen to run up the middle on 4th down.

Retarded.
Dumbest drive of the game.

The point is this, and I also think this is what Darryl is trying to say- Back when Mullen had Chris Leak and a true freshman Tim Tebow, according to the number of snaps, Tebow took about 10% of them that year. He was also almost exclusively the short yardage and goal line qb. He had a job and a limited and certain playbook package that was developing even more as the year went on. That in turn develops confidence in what you’re doing ect. So back to the original post in this thread- when you put KT in on 3rd and 3, and he gets the first down, great. Then run the same play with him 3 more times in a row, for a total of 13 yards on 4 carries. Then when it’s 4th and 1 you take him out and bring in essentially our Chris Leak. It makes no sense and the use of KT has no continuity rather it’s just random. Ironically what’s not random is his allotted playbook when he does come in randomly, which is a run up the middle.

Yes, thank you, that's what I was *trying* to say.

I think Tebow as a lot more ready coming out of HS than Thompson is. He played good competition in Florida and they played a national schedule. I really think KT would have benefited if he'd transferred to a 7A school (or a Big 4 academy in the Jackson metro). I just don't think he got the coaching at Noxubee that Tebow got or some of the top programs in Mississippi have. And yes, I agree that series was beyond stupid. If you are going to give him 4 snaps in a row, you can't run the same damn play all 4 times.

Michael Van Buren went to a Catholic high school in Maryland with 260 people. His first real playing time as a true freshman was on the road in Austin against a highly ranked team. He made some mistakes, yes, but overall he did fine. He did fine enough the rest of the year to get stolen by LSU.
Actually maybe the reality is that Lebby has leaned from his mistakes, and doesn’t want to advertise KT, so LSU or another blue blood want come and steal him away. He might even keep him under wraps next year too and just bring him in randomly to run up the middle. Then when he’s a senior Lebby will start him feeling safe that he can’t then be stolen away. Strategic move that also may help a little with Lebby’s job security as so many people want to keep KT here.
