Stoops and Joker both stink at coaching. Lets get that out of the way right now. However both Stoops and Joker's biggest misfires have not been x and o related(they do suck at that too) they have been huge recruiting misses. Morgan Newton, Ryan Mossakowski, Aaron Boyd, Patrick Towles, Glenn Faulkner, Jason Hatcher, Marcus McWilson, Ryan Timmons, Lloyd Tubman, Matt Elam, Kendall Randolph, Blake Bone, Cory Johnson, Darius West, Mike Edwards, Drew Barker all were big time tier 1 talent that missed. That's not me making excuses for the coach. Quite the opposite, whether they weren't developed properly or they weren't scouted properly that is on the coaches. Think about any time UK has been good in the past. The top tier guys at the prominent positions were either selected correctly or coached to be great. If Drew Barker was playing like Lamar Jackson we are most likely 2-0 and maybe 1-1 but we know we are trending up and not feel like we are going to implode. Great play at key positions can cover up a lot of inadequacies.
We have no one this team outside of Boom Williams and Jordan Jones who are great players. We might have some great WR's(Juice and Tavin come to mind) but they can't get themselves the ball. I'm hoping that while there may not be a gigantic improvement this year Jones gives me that feeling of Woodyard, Trevathan, Williamson. He's a leader in the middle, you can work with that. The problem is offensively other than when we play the 2 patty cakes left on our schedule we don't play a weak defense. Drew isn't very good no way to slice it other than that. He doesn't inspire his teammates, everything he has done since he stepped foot on campus reeks of a me first guy. Now I'll be the first one to say last year i wanted him to play over Towles. Towles had 4 years and never got it done, it was clear that Towles+UK=NOT SUCCESSFUL. Had Drew played more last year maybe he's better now but probably not, to be the kind of hot dog he thinks he is you have to actually be able to walk out on the field and do some Johnny Football stuff.
I'll finish re-stating what i said in a couple of threads last week. I'll be rooting for the cats each and every game and still hoping we get the 6 remaining winnable games. But I think unless a major miracle happens we need someone not named Mitch Barnhart to start scouting these potential hires for UK and we need them to know how to win playing a style that is not straight up 11 on 11 football. We will never win playing traditional football. Not unless we get top talent. That's only way to win playing like that. What did Bill Belicheck do when all the Patriots from the glory years that won the 3 super bowls got old? He released them or they retired. He switched from a ball control offense that relied on a great defense to letting Tom Brady sling it 50 times a game. What happened they remained the best team in the league year in and out and won another super bowl. We aren't ever getting a Belicheck obviously but we need a football mind that is beyond the normal crude football mind.
