2 star commits

I like 5 star commits as much as the Rebels, but I think someone on our staff is able to evaluate better than the scout.com staff.

From 2011, we signed 7 "2 stars". They were:

Taveze Calhoun
Shaquille Perry
Joey Trapp
Justin Malone
Kendrick Market
Preston Smith
Bendardrick McKinney

5 starters. 2 with NFL potential. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Ole Miss signed 4 "2 stars" in 2011.

Philander Moore
Aaron Garbutt
Zack Stoudt
Ivan Nicholas

Ouch.

I don't think there is much doubt this staff has a good eye for talent. Give credit where credit is due.

This really is pretty impressive. I have been really encouraged with the progression of Calhoun and Market. They close exceptionally fast and get there with bad intentions.

If they keep progressing year to year like they have been there could be 4 future nfl players at a minimum in smith, McKinney, Calhoun and Malone. I think it's a lock on McKinney and smith so far. There's been 5'9 5'10 safety's in the league so it's not a given that market doesn't get a shot.

Malone's lack was from:
1. Private school
2. Didn't even play football until either is jr or sr yr (?)
But I'm calling it no Calhoun is my "ya boy".

We've evaluated very, very well on the underrated guys. I don't think anyone would complain about that aspect of our recruiting...

It's the guys that we chase that everyone else has evaluated as worthy that we've got to improve and start getting occasionally... Just 1 or 2 of these types of recruits per class can and would change our fortunes significantly...

Open field too. I love that guys effort though. He's always giving it all he has got. he did it the same way at USP.

That Calhoun tackle on sanders on the crossing route in the open field was very impressive. Hell, he was impressive all night long. Wallace and receivers are having nightmares.

To me

what makes a great DB is their ability to tackle. I can't tell you how many times MSU has been unfortunate enough to not have this in their DBs. It makes a huge difference.

We already get more than 1 or 2 of these types of recruits per class that everyone else has evaluated if not six per dandy dozen each year. I'm sure you mean one or two More per year.

Chris Jones was a 2 star when he committed. Only after he blew up his senior year did he get his next 3 stars.

Chris Jones was a two star initially

until We offered him and more and more people found out about him.

This staff can evaluate and develop that's also just as important. There's very few players in general that flat out suck on our team really. I think it also goes to show that Dan Mullen believes and is executing at what he said he was going to do and that's recruit in MS as there is a lot of talent here and he wants to be in every high school in this state and recruit in a 5 hour radius really hard.

No doubt, but the coaches need to step up and close the deal on some natural 4/5' stars as well. Can they not sell, new facilities, dominating OM, Dak, etc.? I can understand the fact we lose some head to head competition for a recruit, but we have lost almost all of them (Chris Jones) in the last few years. I just don't think Dan gets into it.

I'm not talking about guys that have OM and MSU offers -- I'm talking about guys that the whole SEC comes after hard. We aren't getting quite enough of those guys IMO -- and we've got to find a way to quit being a bridesmaid on them consistently. We've done better in the 2012 and 2013 classes -- but we still aren't where I'd like to be -- or where I think we "should" be. Is there a laundry list of legitimate "reasons" and "excuses"? Sure. That doesn't mean we should just be satisfied with it though. Progress is the act of taking baby steps toward getting better.

Examples: Class of 2013:
Tommy Sanders
Za'Darius Smith
Corey Smith
Johnathan Rumph
Lavon Hooks
Toby Johnson
Quantavius Leslie
Carroll Washington
MacKensie Alexander
Jalen Ramsey
Elijah Daniel
Frank Herron
Tony Conner
Johnathan Ford
Christian Morris
Jason Carr
Andrew Billings

Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head that we were seriously in the game for at their "decision-time" and had what either virtually or absolutely amounted to "a hat on the table", but came up just short -- AND really didn't adequately replace with someone else in the class...

calhoun and market played lights out. the secondary is night and day from the beginning of the year to now. calhoun looks like a man possessed out there and he is starting to string really impressive games together.
