This game jumps out to me as the toughest 1st round game.

What are your thoughts on this matchup?

To me, this is a toss up game.

GBW wins by 7, they both try to mual you but the Hitters are better at it.

After looking st the brackets I think every DVC team in 8A gets dumped in round 1.

Clown... your so bitter today:(.... WWS will be back.. they played very well the last 5 games and if in any other conference but the DVC, WSS, Blue, or the new DuKane 8, they would have made the playoffs.

Agree the three 8A matchups are super tough rough draws from both sides of the coin, but I like GBN to blow through the first round in 7A and face off against ESL!! WV is a big underdog against HC, but I think the other two games are coin flips.

I'm not sure about the final score, but your comment on these two teams mauling each other may be right.

NV looks to be as balanced a team as any that GW has played this year. NV's strength seems to be defense (NV fans please correct me if that's not correct; Im just a distant observer). NV seems to slug it out for 3 qtrs, then after they've worn you out, they score a couple of TD's for the win. Their defense seems to really hold down their opponents, while their offense pounds away (they spread the ball around, can pass the ball effectively, and their junior RB has had a huge impact on the second half of the season -- I think he's a junior). Attribute the loss to looking ahead, and this is a good football team. Should be a fun game.

Defense, particularly LBs and an active DL, is the strength of Neuqua. They have playmakers out wide on offense but the QB position has been a challenge of late.

Injuries are piling up....but I'm sure that's not Neuqua specific this time of year.

Should be a sledgehammer game. I'm looking forward to it.

While agree that both teams try to beat you down with the run, I think the styles look a little different. Running out of the I with play action and the odd shotgun requires an oline to get significant push. GW tends to defend against downhill rushing teams fairly well. NV QB will dictate their success as he might face a lot of 2nd & 9's out there if they run out of the I on first down.

GW tries to use speed to get to the edge more often than what I've seen in my limited view of NV film. It looks like NV pursues well to the ball so it might be tough sledding for GW to exploit the edge like they have recently. That would put pressure on the GW passing game which has taken shape nicely as the year has progressed. If NV sells out to stop the run, GW will exploit that with play action.

GW is not as big as GN so there won't be the same smash mouth straight ahead running as Friday night. GW will be looking to exploit lanes and keep NV off balance. If they can do that, they win by two TDs. If NV QB controls the tempo with effective passing, if could be tough sledding for GW.

Agreed on this point. GW defends against this style of attack extremely well and their D is fast. I don't see the NV power I game matching up well GW's D.

I wonder if NV mixes it up. Yes they had their DE playing Fullback against GBN - but I wonder if that has always been so :D? and/or if they mix it up and attack GBW in a different way:D. Who knows what suprises these coaches have planned for each other next week;)

Good point. If I'm the NV coach I'm trying to get Robinson as many touches as possible. Maybe they'll throw him into a wildcat, who knows?

Yeah - I could see all kinds of crazy wrinkles from both teams getting put into place as "there is no tomorrow"....(unless you win!;))

That's an interesting thought on the wildcat. NV did that last year with Owen Piche quite a bit and it seemed to be pretty effective.

On the GW side, they have gotten healthier over the last few weeks. They seem to have finally achieved their mid-season stride -- better late than never.

I'm not sure which player he is. Is he a receiver?

Yeah, he's a Notre Dame commit. He gave HC fits last year in round 1. He also plays some safety and is a ball hawk.

Neuqua is blessed with a nice group of receivers. You could add Owen Piche and Donny Navarro into that nice outside skill group. A very senior dominated team. They do have a very shifty junior RB that took over the starting RB role a few games into the season. He won't run over anyone,... but he is very quick and has great vision. On D they have a very nice set of LBers (all seniors I think) and they pursue well and make a lot of plays from the backside. They pursue sideline to sideline.

I hear GW has a nice set of LBers as well that pursue sideline to sideline,... going to be a great game boys!! If this one is in the evening I'm going to it after the WV/HC game.

Sorry, I see now. Robertson is #1 and Piche is. #2. Robertson will need to be ready to provide some run support on Saturday. Piche made an impressive play against GN tracking down Tricase. Should be a fun game.

Is he #2? Plays CB as well?
Piche...WR.

Isaiah's a talent, for sure. Everything is there for him to excel at the next level. He's getting better at understanding his "place" on the field. He needs to step up and become dominant on both sides of the ball. If he does that Neuqua will be a tough out. Piche is a better HS receiver, imo. Kid is tough as nails and fairly fast and shifty. Navarro is fast, hard to bring down, and maybe the best football mind of the three.

Raupach(RB)is a pleasant surprise. He's not a thumper but he can run between the tackles. If he gets some space his feet are good enough to bust it.

I like the personnel adjustments the NV coaches have been making. Probably some to cover for injuries but others probably for added depth. They have more guys playing both ways than they did earlier in the season. They rotating some of their Oline into their Dline to keep guys fresh. Their best Dlineman is playing on O either at FB or H-Back or TE. Smart. I wish we would see some of that philosophy over at WV. If we don't - it's going to be a really long afternoon at Hindsdale.

Sorry Voodoo, but not sure I agree that playing more guys both ways keeps guys fresh. Don't get me wrong, if you have a stud, I understand keeping them on the field as much as possible.

But. If NV keeps those WRs on the field on defense all night, they will wear down and be less effective on offense. GW attacks OLB and CB like no other team in IL. Those guys will be sick of having OG and T in their face all night.

I'm not saying/suggesting playing every snap,.. I'm saying playing one way 100percent and on the other side every other possession etc. especially on the Dline... keep a rotation going to keep their Dline fresh to make those GBW Olineman work and strain;):)

I agree with this. Playing kids both ways is an acknowledgement of lack of depth or talent. Neuqua suffers from either. It comes down to the younger kids stepping up when asked vs playing kids 40 minutes.

I guess it depends on what the perceived drop off is between the options. If NV has younger guys close to the level of their starting DE and their Starting safety (Robinson) then of course stay with a 100percent two platoon system. If anyone can do that in IL it should be one of the largest 8A schools like Neuqua. On Most teams there is a pretty damn big delta gap between those two options and hence coaches are willing to have some guys go both ways with enough breathers/series off to ensure they stay somewhat fresh. especially now in the playoffs.

Agree......at the Neuqua/Loyola/HF/WV/HC level. Otherwise, depth is usually an issue.

Whoa hold on there Buck. WV has 2500 kids and barely 60 guys on varsity (about 55 guys dress before they brought up some of the key Sophs and Frosh for playoffs). Neuqua has 3700 kids and 80+ on varsity.

At WV I can tell you there is a huge gap. In several postions there is really only an emergeny backup and not a true depth chart second string back up.

NV has 100 guys on their roster. That should provide a ton of depth.

Let's have this discussion next Sunday. My guess is #1 and #2 will be less effective in 4th qtr than the 1st

Based on what I saw on the CSN replay of the Neuqua Glenbard North game - there could be as many as 8 guys playing snaps on both offense and defense. It won't be every snap - but will be a significant amount of both Way snaps. That is unless the coaches feel going back to a true two platoon gives them a better chance to win with the depth NapervilleBuck is alluding to. I guess we will see in 6 days!!

I suppose the NV players are used to the two way thing. I'd assume it won't be a factor on Saturday. But this is a tough time of the season for a lot of kids, with winter sports starting. I've always wondered what the impact of that is on players...you have to want to play football in November and not mind missing the beginning of basketball or wrestling. Anyway, NV will be ready on Saturday.

I see your back, glad you got over your snit! Out of all these guys posting I think either you or Voodoo may understand this situation best. I'm certain that Piche and Ceisla will not have any issue going both ways. Robertson has never had an issue either, but based on play I've seen this season Piche is the fastest member of the team. Was honestly shocked to see him track down V from behind this past Friday.

It is not that playing both ways is an issue. It is that GW runs a style of offense that is particularly brutal on OLBs and CBs. Playing CB against GW requires a large set. Having watched 70+ games of GW over the last few years, those two positions are the most difficult.

capnbill, based on GW's improved play over the last 3 weeks, NV should expect a lot of stress at OLB and CB this Saturday.

Capn and other GW posters help me understand what makes GW especially hard on the LBs and DBs. What about the safety roles?

Watch some film. Double wing motion with jet sweeps and quick pitches can put pulling guards and tackles on the edge in a hurry. And if GW finds a weakness, they go back to it. For a really good example, find the OPRF game from '15 or '16.

This would be playing into some of Neuqua strengths. Ask Voodoo he will speak volumes to this. If you want to press Neuqua their weakness has been the CBs over the years and last week was no exception with James having 7 receptions for 200+ yds. If you think motion, sweeps, and pitches to get outside will do the trick...not so much.

Yeah - It would be strength on strength. NV's base 3-3-5 defense is well suited to stop the runs on the edges. They flow extremely well to the ball and are very fast in the back 8. If GW can run the jets and tosses with a lot of success then they probably win the game.

Historically (I don't want to do any free scouting ;)) Passing teams have had some success against NV as Jwar mentioned and they have been susceptible to the power running game between the tackles. I think the free tape of the CSN re-broadcast paints a decent map as to how GBN attacked the NV defense to put a 35 on the scoreboard to beat them pretty convincingly 35-14.

To be clear, I never stated GW would have massive success on the edge against NV. The context of my point was the wear and tear on guys playing OLB and CB would diminish their effectiveness on offense.

My point is they should have that kind of depth. I'm not sure they have it and if they do it is severely under developed. Having 100 kids on the team should give you options to not play kids both ways. Now, I see why Isaiah plays both ways and others. But teams that win are those with the depth to get through injuries, etc.
