This game jumps out to me as the toughest 1st round game.
What are your thoughts on this matchup?
To me, this is a toss up game.

GBW wins by 7, they both try to mual you but the Hitters are better at it.
After looking st the brackets I think every DVC team in 8A gets dumped in round 1.

I'm not sure about the final score, but your comment on these two teams mauling each other may be right.GBW wins by 7, they both try to mual you but the Hitters are better at it.

Running out of the I with play action and the odd shotgun requires an oline to get significant push. GW tends to defend against downhill rushing teams fairly well.
Agreed on this point. GW defends against this style of attack extremely well and their D is fast. I don't see the NV power I game matching up well GW's D.
Who knows what suprises these coaches have planned for each other next week![]()
Good point. If I'm the NV coach I'm trying to get Robinson as many touches as possible. Maybe they'll throw him into a wildcat, who knows?
On the GW side, they have gotten healthier over the last few weeks. They seem to have finally achieved their mid-season stride -- better late than never.I'm not sure about the final score, but your comment on these two teams mauling each other may be right.
NV looks to be as balanced a team as any that GW has played this year. NV's strength seems to be defense (NV fans please correct me if that's not correct; Im just a distant observer). NV seems to slug it out for 3 qtrs, then after they've worn you out, they score a couple of TD's for the win. Their defense seems to really hold down their opponents, while their offense pounds away (they spread the ball around, can pass the ball effectively, and their junior RB has had a huge impact on the second half of the season -- I think he's a junior). Attribute the loss to looking ahead, and this is a good football team. Should be a fun game.
I'm not sure which player he is. Is he a receiver?Good point. If I'm the NV coach I'm trying to get Robinson as many touches as possible. Maybe they'll throw him into a wildcat, who knows?

Yeah, he's a Notre Dame commit. He gave HC fits last year in round 1. He also plays some safety and is a ball hawk.

Piche...WR.Is he #2? Plays CB as well?
I like the personnel adjustments the NV coaches have been making. Probably some to cover for injuries but others probably for added depth. They have more guys playing both ways than they did earlier in the season. They rotating some of their Oline into their Dline to keep guys fresh. Their best Dlineman is playing on O either at FB or H-Back or TE. Smart. I wish we would see some of that philosophy over at WV. If we don't - it's going to be a really long afternoon at Hindsdale.
Sorry Voodoo, but not sure I agree that playing more guys both ways keeps guys fresh. Don't get me wrong, if you have a stud, I understand keeping them on the field as much as possible.
But. If NV keeps those WRs on the field on defense all night, they will wear down and be less effective on offense. GW attacks OLB and CB like no other team in IL. Those guys will be sick of having OG and T in their face all night.

I agree with this. Playing kids both ways is an acknowledgement of lack of depth or talent. Neuqua suffers from either. It comes down to the younger kids stepping up when asked vs playing kids 40 minutes.
I guess it depends on what the perceived drop off is between the options. If NV has younger guys close to the level of their starting DE and their Starting safety (Robinson) then of course stay with a 100percent two platoon system. If anyone can do that in IL it should be one of the largest 8A schools like Neuqua. Most teams there is a pretty damn big delta gap between those two options and hence coaches are willing to have some guys go both ways with enough breathers/series off to ensure they stay somewhat fresh.
Agree......at the Neuqua/Loyola/HF/WV/HC level. Otherwise, depth is usually an issue.
NV has 100 guys on their roster. That should provide a ton of depth.
Let's have this discussion next Sunday. My guess is #1 and #2 will be less effective in 4th qtr than the 1st
I suppose the NV players are used to the two way thing. I'd assume it won't be a factor on Saturday. But this is a tough time of the season for a lot of kids, with winter sports starting. I've always wondered what the impact of that is on players...you have to want to play football in November and not mind missing the beginning of basketball or wrestling. Anyway, NV will be ready on Saturday.
capnbill, based on GW's improved play over the last 3 weeks, NV should expect a lot of stress at OLB and CB this Saturday. It is not that playing both ways is an issue. It is that GW runs a style of offense that is particularly brutal on OLBs and CBs. Playing CB against GW requires a large set. Having watched 70+ games of GW over the last few years, those two positions are the most difficult.

Watch some film. Double wing motion with jet sweeps and quick pitches can put pulling guards and tackles on the edge in a hurry. And if GW finds a weakness, they go back to it. For a really good example, find the OPRF game from '15 or '16.
This would be playing into some of Neuqua strengths. Ask Voodoo he will speak volumes to this. If you want to press Neuqua their weakness has been the CBs over the years and last week was no exception with James having 7 receptions for 200+ yds. If you think motion, sweeps, and pitches to get outside will do the trick...not so much.
Based on what I saw on the CSN replay of the Neuqua Glenbard North game - there could be as many as 8 guys playing snaps on both offense and defense. It won't be every snap - but will be a significant amount of both Way snaps. That is unless the coaches feel going back to a true two platoon gives them a better chance to win with the depth NapervilleBuck is alluding to. I guess we will see in 6 days!!
