you do realize these low to mid-level mid majors are charging $1 million for one time buy games now, this has been discussed quite a bit.

At least we're getting 2 for 1 for it and not a home and home.

Byrne's got us 7 home games every year except for the year Larry had already locked us into a 6 home game schedule.

I'm wondering about Bowling Green though... Is that a buy game? Surprising if so. I think it's more likely we'll be playing in Ohio sometime? Also, what about Tulane?

Not sure why they would, especially with LSU buying out of their deal with Tulane.

Also, the 2011 LA Tech game is a buy game, the 2012 game is the return game from our trip out there last year, and the 2015 & 2016 games are part of a 2-for-1 with LA Tech also coming to Starkville in 2017. Pretty good job of OOC scheduling by the Ninja.

but 3 of 5 in both 2010 and 2011 and your point is still valid.

it does look like that is changing, though. notice the schedules going forward, esp. 2012. get the wool ready - looks like a schedule made for a 4-0 start.

from Saturday. I have no problem whatsoever with this scheduling, and the Southern Miss series even looks good now with the fuller schedule available.

These past few days have been full of unfamiliar emotions, from excitement during an LSU game, to feeling let down after an LSU game, to looking forward to the next week's game as potential source of relief instead of more pain, to seeing scheduling news that doesn't make me want to throw up in my mouth.

is now done and the new has worn off. At some point, they will get tired of paying for tickets to drive to Starkville and watch their team lose by 40 +.

And at that point, maybe we stop scheduling them. Until then, why not actually have our I-AA opponent actually sell a few tickets for a change. I'm not in favor of playing an in-state I-AA team every year, but I think we should do it about half the time. It's pretty much a no-brainer.

they play Arkansas State and lose by 60. They will get beat regardless. They are just looking for $$$. Alcorn played at Central Michigan. I am sure they would rather play in Starkville where it costs less to travel and get paid more.

at the very least $30+ for tickets (who knows what the going price will be in the future?) to drive to Starkville and watch the same song and dance? After JSU's coach's claims of ungratefulness on our part ($315,000 not enough), I can't believe we're even going down this road again. Sooner or later, the economical side of it won't show near as much benefit.

then yes, I think they will come.

I am guessing on the % but I guarantee it's a huge chunk.

Edit to add: In the 2007 Division I budget figures provided by the Office of Postsecondary Education, Alcorn State ranks 337 out of 339 schools, with an operating budget of $3,172,348.

every year this is brought up. I mean, if this is such a grand idea every year, why doesn't Ole Miss play them? Why doesn't anyone in the SEC play them for that matter? I'm sure if their fans are that willing to come to Starkville, they wouldn't mind driving on to Baton Rouge or Tuscaloosa either. I know it has more economic benefits for us than it would a bigger school but I just think over time, the new will wear off and it won't be near as big a deal to them.

we are keeping money in the state. We are getting our yearly 1AA win and we are increasing our odds of selling tickets to the opponents fans.

If they try to drive the price too high, Im sure we'll just go another direction.

Remind me again what the downside is?

potential downsides with money in the future. Probably just let their coach's opinions get to me too much. Still hard to believe someone would gripe about their school's biggest payday when we didn't pay a similar opponent half of that the year before.

which I agree with. With our conference schedule alone, we have to have a gimme game built in to our schedule. I think SWAC schools are the way to go. They are the lowest risk. There is really no shot of them pulling an upset (See Appalachian State and Remember The Maine), or even staying within 40 points. I think if we played Jackson State this Saturday we would beat them by 50. You get to pull starters early and give inexperienced players a break.

we can always drop them then. And to respond to one of your earlier posts, it's not like we're asking any school's fans to continue to buy tickets to a game in Starkville. If the rumor is true, we're scheduling Miss. Valley next year, not Jackson State again. You do realize those are two different schools, don't you?

We don't have any other 1-AA schools in our state or even in the vicinity. They are the closest 1-AA schools to us (Jacksonville St. not withstanding) and are likely to bring more fans than Northwestern St. or Northern Arizona. It cuts down on travel expenses for them and what they want to ask in compensation.

4 of 6 on the road to start 2011? Would love to flip those Memphis games and open on the road next year to balance out 2011.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has an interesting story on athletics departments debt loads that was just published today. Here are some paragraphs from the article:

Nearly four years ago, Mr. Pickens gave $165-million to Cowboy Athletics Inc., the athletics department's nonprofit corporation. His aim was to improve the performance of the football team, which for years had dwelt at the bottom of the Big 12 Conference.

Cowboy Athletics used that donation to secure a $300-million credit agreement to finance the construction of the end-zone facility and an athletics complex. The athletics department had already spent $50-million to buy up the existing structures on a nearby 100-acre tract, where it intended to build a new baseball stadium, tennis facility, and equestrian center, among other amenities.

The nonprofit corporation's Board of Trustees, of which Mr. Pickens is a member, then invested the entire donation in Mr. Pickens's energy hedge fund. As the markets soared, the athletics investment peaked last summer at more than $400-million.

But the euphoria was short-lived. By October 2008, the original donation's value had plummeted to $125-million, forcing athletics officials to table the idea of the athletics complex and obtain a $38-million loan from the university to complete construction on the end-zone facility. Within the next year, Oklahoma State plans to issue a $38-million bond to cover the athletics department's shortfall.

I'm pretty positive it will never be more than 500-1000 and these are just more tickets that state fans are going to buy up. No FCS opponent is going to buy any more than that except for Jackson State. Teams like Murray State and UT Chat will not buy up many tickets either. More and more state fans will be coming to games in the next few years and that just means we have more tickets to sell to our own fans.

So he gives them a chunk of cash and then convinces them to invest it all in his company??? Seriously.....how is this legal?
