anyone have an idea who Ray is looking at? I noticed Devin Booker is the #19 overall rated player in the nation. He's from Moss Point and doesn't hold an MSU offer. Anyone have info on Booker? He is tops in MS in scoring at 29.7ppg.

Joniah White from Madison Central is avg 9.8 blocks a game. It would be nice to get another Varnado. Anyone have info on White? He does hold an MSU offer.

I think the other thread about players per capita has proven that we have to capitalize on MS talent and the surrounding area. However, we are going to have to get them to respect the coach and actually play basketball, unlike what Stansbury did after 2005. If Ray can do that, he can be successful recruiting MS bball players. I'd like to see a big presence in Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana.

I don't think we have a chance with Booker, but I may be wrong. I would assume we could get the White guy if we wanted him.

Is 2013 recruiting finished? Is the 3 we have all we're going to sign?

I feel pretty confident that Booker would not be turned away. Basketball recruiting is not nearly as covered as football recruiting is, so just because it says he doesn't have an offer doesn't mean that he actually doesn't. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. And White is a good high school player, but at this point he would get abused by college players. He is 6'11 but he's a bean pole. Smaller than Jarvis was when he came out of high school. But get him on a good workout plan and you never know what will happen.

last i read/heard about Booker was that the other MSU had a consistent presence at his games. can't remember who else. that said, i don't think he's the type of player that can take over a game but he's certainly a stud in that class.

This is pure speculation, but looking at his offers (Duke, North Carolina, Michigan), it may be one of those deals where the kid only wants to play at a big-time powerhouse. It's possible he told the staff after receiving such offers that he doesn't want to stick around here. I certainly hope that isn't the case, but if it is, it may be a good thing Ray and staff don't waste valuable recruiting time and can turn their attention elsewhere. Again, that is just speculation, but it seems to be the logical explanation as to why we haven't offered him (in my mind).

Yea I definitely don't think we get him

Just saying that I don't think he would be turned away if he wanted to come. I read somewhere that he is originally from Michigan (I think), so he was looking at those schools.

Booker is AT Moss Point, but he's from Michigan. Our MSU has no shot.

Joniah White is an awesome player. He's ALREADY as good as Varnado was early his sophomore year. He changes almost every shot (and blocks a lot of those), plays a solid game on offense, is a monster on the boards, passes the ball excellently for a big man (heck even for a 3 or small 4), can run the floor quickly, shoots free throws like a pro, doesn't tire quickly, and is very knowledgable about the game.

Joniah could use some more weight. He doesn't play mean enough all of the time. And he sometimes gets frustrated when the ball isn't rolling his teams way (i.e. non calls under the goal, bad calls by the ref which happened a lot this year, etc.)

I have several thoughts about Joniah. I think he likes State. He likes that there's an immediate opportunity for him to gain playing time. He likes coach Ray. However, his coach is Rahaim Lockheart. So I'm not sure exactly how THAT plays out for us. I think his main three are us, Memphis, and Ole Miss. And out of those three, right now, I'd call us the favorite (even an assistant coach of the team I talked to agrees), but I'm probably not the most knowledgeable there is out there.

I would LOVE to see Joniah in maroon and white.
