True athlete or utility player as I call them would be Reggie Gallaspy. He played heavy time on O and D for Southern Guilford putting up big numbers on both sides of the ball. I like him at that position and Johhny Frasier at running back. May have been hard pressed to go with Love over Nyheim Hines or Rocky Reid but cannot really argue that especially the way he led his team to the title game while banged up. Lot of heart!

How much D did Hughes and Ladowski play. Both are run/pass QBs but does that qualify as the athlete position? I expect Hughes, like Ladowski, saw some time at D Back in close games and may be some returns.

The best QB I watched play was Anthony Ratliff and I saw East Lincoln, New Bern, and Lake Norman. Did not see Hinton at Southern Durham but he was probably the best pure passer from seeing him in the summer. Ratliff is big and can toss it much better than than the two athletes. Regardless of classification Surratt is the real deal but playing in 2A is going to put him against teams that are not as used to seeing the big passing attacks. With one regular season loss and a regional final with his numbers hard not to have Ladowski as the QB.

The best all around player, athlete, utilityman I saw play was Jaire Alexander from Rocky River. Scored a TD on every possible type of return. Punt, kickoff, interception, fumble. Was a beast getting the ball at wide out and as a return man.

Randy Sudyam was a two way lineman for Mallard Creek that is a go getter. Can play hand up or down on D and is a blocking machine on the line. That is a utilityman / athlete but linemen rarely get the nod there as it goes to QBs that have strong passing and rushing combo numbers. Darian Roseboro was a dominant defender and played running back for Lincolnton. Man among boys.

Ask any OL at the Shrine Bowl which D lineman was the toughest to handle and the answer was Jaylen Cousar. Teams game planned not to run near him and double at the line and triple with a back on passing downs. His only downfall is he gassed a little too much but he was a wrecking crew on the D line for a team that played a brutal schedule.

Wideout position. You can use stats but I feel confident that Vernon Grier from Mallard Creek would buzz the three listed including big time recruit Mollette. Ball was spread around a lot but blocking, catching in traffic, and beating DBs deep were phases he excelled at. Starting to see a lot of big numbers at receiver and QB.

There are so many special high school footballers each year in NC there is going to be a lot of second guessing. Congrats to the ones that made it.

I would like to see four receivers listed, not wide out or tight end. A lot of tight ends are playing wide. The old TE position for blocking is often more of an H Back.

Thought Mahlon Medley was a difference maker at TE for Mallard Creek. Ran and caught the ball from various spots and also was a devasting blocker.

Bishop Ford from Hough was the most explosive back I saw this year. Had good numbers and really didn't get on track until the 2nd half of the season due to Hough's early struggles on offense. Great vision, got a crease and was gone.

Matt Kowaleski was the key to Catholic's running game at tackle. Mauler in the run game

Miles Dorn from Vance was another kid who could have been mentioned at athlete. Tall wide out who had very good numbers and a hitter in the secondary.

Agree with Cousar. he gave MC more issues that the kid from Wake with the 5 stars did.

Mcmillan at LB for Scotland was a kid who blew up plays all over the field,

Mike Hughes played a few snaps in two games at DB, that's it. He also opened up a game at WR and caught a 44 yard pass. Other than that, he strictly played QB and P. Anybody see the CC game? Mike was punting the hell out of the ball all night, very impressive. I'm glad he will move back to his natural position of CB at UNC.

No....that can't be right....way too many 2A players on that list. Even the QB? A Shelby DB? No...can't be. All state team is all stars right? That would have to be limited to "big boy football"? Right? Got to be limited to only 4A players.

It's too easy to break up the 4A party. Congrats Demerrio Houston for, I believe, leading the state in INTs this year.

It's a lot easier to stand out from the crowd if you're not on a team full of all-stars to begin with. That's why there's only two kids at all from Charlotte on this list, and that's pretty typical.

Here's what I know...and I know it because it happens every season...there are more future Div I players on this year's Mallard Creek roster than all of Cleveland County combined will produce in the next 15 years.

So by all means, keep bragging about your one great player or whatever it is you're even trying to brag about. College programs know what the deal is. It's the reason why SEC and ACC teams line up in the hallways of these schools at the start of football season waiting their turns to talk to the coaches and players. It's why coaches like Nick Saban have our high schools on speed dial (and even some of our players). It's why ESPN comes and films our practices for their commercials. It's why one team can produce 6 BCS recruits and 16 total college signees in one season, and a completely different team can duplicate the feat the next season. And it's why you'll have a hard time watching any SEC or ACC bowl game in the next two weeks without seeing Charlotte kids littering those teams' rosters in key roles.

You totally have no concept of what big boy football is, as your continued ignorant posting here continues to prove time and time again.
