2016 Power 5 opponent?

Any ideas as to who our opponent will be in 2016 and 2017? We have P5 games until 2023 besides the first two years of the new scheduling mandate.

play K-State '18 & 19, NC State 20 & 21, and Arizona 22 & 23. Mandate starts 2016. 2016 and 17 are still open.

I know it's been said on H2H that we do have a one particular team in mind, without specifying which team that is.

I've heard BYU as a possible candidate, though it is unclear whether or not they are considered "Power 5".

If I'm not mistaken, Notre Dame is the only independent that is considered power 5 so I'm sure BYU wouldn't count.

That is correct. BYU is trying to change that but has been unsuccessful so far. I don't really think they're the national brand they used to be, but Notre Dame still is.

How many power 5 schools have an open date available and are willing to schedule a home and home or neutral site game the same week as we have an open date available for those 2 years? If you look at byu's schedule for 2016 and beyond it looks like they're making some headway. In 2016 4 of 9 games they have listed are against power 5 teams plus games against boise st and Cincinnati. They have 4 future dates with notre dame agreed upon as well. I don't know if their goal is to add as many power 5 games as possible but they've done enough to prove they're worthy of a power 5 rule exemption. They'll be no worse in 2016/2017 than a bad team from a power 5 conference. I don't see what the big deal is especially when we are limited with our options.

How many power 5 schools have an open date available and are willing to schedule a home and home or neutral site game the same week as we have an open date available for those 2 years?

The only real P5 schools I see as possibilities are:
Florida State - kickoff game - Georgia is front-runner though.
Michigan State - opening weekend
West Virginia
Cal
Stanford

Everybody else seems to be full, already have a P5 ooc game, or are in our future. Unless an FCS or G5 team gets dropped, of course.

BYU doesn't count. My guess is we're trying to get a waiver from the SEC to let them count for 2016-2017 due to the short notice & the fact we've already scheduled the next 6 years,

Michigan state isn't available for 2016; they already have 12 games scheduled. Cal and stanford looks to be the options unless we get the byu waiver.

Don't forget that the Pac-12 has nine conference games. Cal and Stanford may have FCS schools in mind for 2016.

Purdue's got 12 games scheduled for 2016 (9 Big 10 games + Eastern KY, Cincy & Nevada). Only 1 OOC game scheduled for 2017, but it's vs. Missouri.

I know for a fact that we were in negotiations with Texas Tech, but was under the impression it was for '18 & '19... We may still be in discussions, haven't asked in a while.

Seems like it'd be in the SEC's interest to let us play BYU. That's probably more attractive than the P5 opponent we'd wind up scheduling.

The SEC's interest is to promote the SEC. I think if MSU's difficulty in getting 2016 and 2017 power opponents becomes more apparent, then they will step in to do something.
