Is your thermopen broken?

If not, why would you buy a cheaper one when you already have the more expensive one that is a little bit faster?
It finally died after years of abuse. Had a couple big cracks and I left it outside. Dead.

Therompen is certainly instant but the other one is quick enough.

Grilled the oysters over the weekend. Dropped them unopened on the grill and cracked each of them as soon as they popped open on their own. Turned out excellent but need to work on the mix of what to put on them once they open and finish cooking. Will most likely just use a little butter, garlic and tabasco.

I do the Smashburger technique on my Weber Kettle. I put the cast iron insert in the middle and it is directly over the charcoal basket. That cast iron read 600+ with an infrared thermometer.

I might do that. Looks like BGE now has a cast iron plate setter. That's pretty cool and would be useful although it seems this is the preferred griddle. Probably just order this and stick with the pizza stone/spider method.

Smash burgers or bacon would taste even better with a light smoke flavor.

15lbs of butt about to be finished. Don't think I could get any more on a medium. Large is just around the corner. Talked to a guy yesterday at a green egg dealer that offered to sell me a large that he bought last fall with his bil. Said they only used it about 5 times. Sounds like he's got a lot of the goodies for it as well that go with the sale. $500. Didn't think to ask but I hope he bought a digi Q.

The lack of size and accessories is holding me back with the medium. I'm a peacock, I gotta fly.

Same here re: the medium. Hopefully find a deal on a large as you did.

Picked up the egg this afternoon. Got the large egg, nest, daisy wheel and ceramic top, bag of green egg lump, platesetter, cast iron grate, looftlighter. grill brush, and the clean out tool that is too small.

Now I have to build a table. Want an egg at either end and a two burner propane cook top, flush mounted in the center. If anyone has one of those laying around they're not using, hit me up.

^I haven't seen those specifically but there are TONS of autocad renderings out there for different setups.

-The cast iron plate is pretty solid, need to work on temp control, but I used it for halibut last night. I can see that getting a ton of use.

Just picked up a Weber Genesis over the weekend. Cranking it up for a get together on Thunder.

Someone sell me that dropping that much $$ was the right thing to do...

Anth is turning into Ursch. Mr. Judgemental.

...but he's right here. You could have gotten a BGE w/ the works. o_O (or a Weber Kettle + new mower)

I'll get a cast iron griddle for the stove top. The cast iron cooking grate that I have is rusty. I'll give it a good cleaning before I use it, hopefully before my wife sees it. She'll never eat anything off of it if she sees it the way it is now.

I've seen a design that I like, I'll just tweak it a little bit. It's going to end up huge. Probably 8' long by 3' wide.

Speaking of expensive weber stuff, I'd like to get a closer look at one of these. I think they're around 1700$

That's just a Weber Kettle and a 2 burner stove, right? $1700 is crazy talk. I got a nice 3 burner a few years back for like $150 and a Kettle is like $150. Pay a carpenter, or yourself if you're crafty, $4-500 to build a nice wooden stand for the two and come out $1000 ahead.

It's a weber summit charcoal. I balked at the price too, but it does have some new features. The kettle is double walled, its got a hinged lid and it's much bigger than the standard kettle. I've been cooking on the same weber performer for 13 years and I feel like I could get another 13 out of it but... my eye is starting to wander a bit. That burner is just for starting the charcoal

Yeah, I just think for that $$ you can do much better.

Just used a looftlighter for the first time this morning. I probably wouldn't have bought one, but that thing is badass. Might use it to char a steak. Puts out air at 1250°F.

I did some salmon on the grill the other night on my char grill wrangler. Used some blackning season and it was good. I'm enjoying the heck out if it. It's no big green egg but I like it.

All right, it is probably blasphemy here to talk about gas grills, but I am going to do it. I don't really have the time or the energy on many days to deal with charcoal. Many days I come home for lunch and throw one chicken breast on the grill to have for lunch. So, for quick and easy cooking I need a new propane grill. I would like something with some pretty decent quality, but at a reasonable price. Any suggestions?

Takes my charcoal grill 10 minutes to get to temp. Takes my neighbors gas grill 10 minutes to get to temp.

Buy a weber and a blow torch.

Unfortunately, I still require a propane grill, and suggestions for a good buy would be appreciated.

FYI used my Weber Genesis first time over weekend and it took less than 3 min to get to 400 deg
Probably dome temp but not to get your cooking surface ready. They really need 10 or so minutes at least unless you just want to throw meat on cool grates.

Look, gas is fine. Just in this thread you're going to be judged.

We were already planning on doing burgers tonight so I'm probably going to pick up a few extra supplies and give the smash burger technique a try.

Any tips that weren't covered in the Food Lab article?
