1st query- last game of year - Lafayette and Grafton play each other but both show as away game? Error?

For DP- as you play Smithfield right before us, show them a good time!

In my opinion Hanover has the toughest schedule in the entire East. Just plain brutal.
Eastern Views OOD schedule is probably the weakest (Culpeper, Orange, Turner Ashby and Brentsville).

Lafayette picked up 3a Norcom (a step up from last year). I realize I am hard on the Rams, but their mandatory schedule consist of 2 2a's, 3 3a's, and 4 4a's. Why not schedule someone of equal or greater value? Just saying!!!! smh.

Looks like its going to be a fun year across the state. Based on alot teams scheduling and possible losses you could have some very good early round playoff games.

We will try to be gracious and giving host. But the Packers could be coming off of a victory over the Generals when they come riding into Wanner.

I agree Navy. Hanover has their work cut out for them. Godwin and Armstrong are almost certain wins, but unless they improve significantly from last year, all of the other eight games will tough outs for the Hawks. I know they wish they had Clayton for one more year.

Hey Navy, our buddies in Botetourt don't have a cake walk either.

Well, Norcom was 5-5 last year playing a tough schedule that included LT and Phoebus. Other than Smithfield going to Dinwiddie it probably is the best opponent of any other Bay Rivers team has scheduled for our 1 and only OOD game. Yep the district is 2 -2A's, 4 - 3A's and 4- 4A's but I can say these local, reasonably short distance rivals mean more to players and fans than to discard and play higher ranked teams a fair distance away that lack any connection to this immediate area.

I thought they wanted to do away with the "A" and just say class 4 or class 3, and right there on the master schedule it says 1A, 2 A. Gotta love it.

Lafayette, what would you say your average home attendance is? How about the average attendance of the home crowd at your away games, as well as how many Layayette faithful go to most of the away games?

We don't have the huge crowds like some of the schools, like Salem, etc., but we have consistent crowds.
The Central District splits the gate after expenses, so the other AD's love us. We almost always are equal to or greater than the home crowd at our away games. Some of the visiting crowds at Dinwiddie during Central District play are really sad. I've seen 100 or less on the visiting side many times. And that's when many of the visiting teams have good teams with good records.

The saddest crowd I saw at one of our away games was at Petersburg year before last. It was their homecoming. My brother-in-law counted heads during the National Anthem. He counted only 52. It's hard to expect much from the kids when the parents, teachers, staff and school board can only get 52 to the homecoming game.

First things first. Next team up is Denbigh. (But yeah, I can't wait either). I'm leaving Hatteras the Friday morning of the Salem game at daybreak, stopping at home long enough to unload and gather up Bleeding Navy and others, then head to Salem. I hope the guys are ok with getting hotel rooms. Three more hours back home after the game might be more than this ole back can stand.

The rival games of Warhill and Jamestown regardless of record attracts a full ruckus house of several thousand and it is loud. Bruton attracts about half as much. On away games with the three York schools only a couple hundred go and sometimes less ( not real good!) and their attendance here is usually poor. Example: last year when Grafton in the playoffs upset Smithfield and then played here- only about 100 showed up. But the Poquoson game is well attended home or away- Large crowd on both sides- maybe 1200-1500 total. Smithfield being the farthest and thru lousy traffic is lightly attended if away. Here, the attendance at all games is a lot of late comers- 7-7:30. I can get a good seat and head out to a 7 game at 6:20.

Lafayette, my intent was not to degrade the Rams, nor take a shot at you personally. I saw their abilities with my own eyes and consider them a well coached contending team. I just can't fathom why the coach/ad opts not to challenge his team with the one chance he has to do so.

Almost every team attempts to schedule one sure OOD game, but in the Rams three years at the new 4a level they have scheduled down. Norcom was 5-5 last year; however when they played better than average teams (Varina, LT, Phoebus, King George, and Norview) they lost by a combined score of 216-18. Do you believe the Greyhounds will play the Rams close?

I get the district makeup and the local rivalry theory, but it appears like the schedule is designed for 9 or 10 wins and a high seed come playoff time. I honestly believe they will only be challenged by two teams and possibly beaten once this season (Smithfield and Grafton). If I were a Rams fan I know I would ask why we continue to have one of the weakest strength of schedules in 4a and would beg for a game that would prepare the team for the playoff grind.

Lafayette, I promise I am not trying to start an argument. If you are cool with the schedule and believe its in the best interest of your team then out of respect for you I will leave it alone.

That's along the lines of what I would have guessed. Thank you. Best wishes for another great season. Hopefully we can see each other again this late fall.

No offense taken! Nice to have met and talked with you last year. My theory on the one OOD game being light is the coaches do not want a top team as the first game with many new players to learn and execute the system (remember Lafayette is near smallest 4a with 1100 students, Warhill and Jamestown have about 200 more) and any seasoning for the playoffs 10 weeks away is minimal. I think if this game was mid season or later the theory and type of team schedule would significantly change. I have actually asked if the Bay Rivers would be dissolved so all teams could reschedule similar group size teams and eliminate playing down. The response I got was 100% unlikely the Bay Rivers district going away or changing. It appears all the coaches and Ad's like it the way it is. Would I change it all? Simply, Yes. When I played ball in New Jersey the same disparities in conference members happened over time and total conference reallignment occurred 5 times in the last 30 years.

Haha!!No confirmation needed I am old! Played 1967-69 in northern Jersey and in those days a lot fewer rules. No punching, clipping or tripping and some pass interference calls. Blow to head -ok, Forearm as a weapon to hit- ok, chop block- ok, block in the back most of time - ok, late hits- hardly ever called, some personal fouls but it had to flagrant!

I was taught as a down lineman, (1969), to use a three point stance, and always try to bring my other elbow up in the throat or chin of the opponent. (The truth is, I used that arm to try to keep the other guy from taking my head off most of the time!)

Around 1981...maybe 82, we were playing Charles City, I played LG on offense, CC played a 6 man front, so I had a young lad lined up in front of me all night. The entire 1st quarter, if I wasn't pulling as the lead blocker, he would grab my face mask and bulldog me to the ground. I complained several times to the officials until one finally told me to stop being a p***y and to "handle it", the VERY next play, we ran a blocking block wedge, straight up man to man blocking, I absolutely UNLOADED a devastating forearm to his throat. He missed a few series, but once he came back into the game, he never once touched my face mask again. All is fair in love and war and apparently in the trenches of the LOS.

I love that.

Another thing I've seen, and I'm sure we all have, is when a defensive player on the team you are beating the crap out of, showboats after a tackle or two. Guess where the next few plays are going? Actually saw one kid that thought he was Dick Butkus get creamed two plays in a row, and helped to the sideline after the third play, never to re-enter the game. Be careful what you ask for, sometimes you get it.

During my one and only year of football, (JV), my father asked me why the only part of my uniform that got dirty was the backside. I told him it was because I got knocked on my *** on every play. He then knocked me on my *** for cussing! I would like to add this, I was a bit of a wuss back then. I only wish I had had the attitude back then I have now. Somebody would have died, me or the opponent. I don't know how tough I am, but there is no question about how stubborn, (and stupid), I am.

My best wishes to all of you for a safe, fun, and enjoyable 4th.

The attitude is in the eye of the beholder DP. Used to be? Lol. I was not around in 1912, so I cannot judge your manhood, but I must admit you do occassinally appear to get your dander up. Especially when you are a few minutes late getting your meal.

I am so desperate for football I watched a Canadian Football League replay last night. Jeez, lets get this thing going.
