Yeah, coaching matters. Pete did the smart things and kicked field goals with his badass kicker instead of going for it all of the time like Kiffin would've done. Maybe it implodes around Pete over the next few years, but it is truly a shame how far away from them we are at the moment. I didn't want to admit it, but they took leaps while we just kept stepping backwards.

Very reminiscent of when Oregon brand grew and just left Oregon State in the dust.

Our leadership 17n sucks!

I couldn't figure out exactly what it was, but that analogy you just made explains it perfectly. I also couldn't explain the exactly why people don't like Keenum....and there it is. It's not just athletics but the branding as a whole. We couldn't market ourselves as the "Harvard of the South", but we most definitely could market ourselves as something.....something unified, pointing in the same direction. I haven't seen where we have done anyhting close to that.

Cue the "we don't have the money" crowd. That is ********.

We have. We are "The People's University"....sorta like Cuba or North Korea.....

Head coaches matter more than ever before because if you miss on your evaluations, money is going poof. We are seeing that more than anyone.

We need a President (and group of advisors) that have a strategic plan/blueprint for what they want our Athletic Department to do for us, particularly in football, both basketballs and baseball. It needs to be accepted by all. I do think Keenum is the right guy to head this up because he's an MSU guy. That way, we know EXACTLY what we want in an athletic director, and EXACTLY what we want from all our coaches. That makes it easier to continually hire them.

We currently are just floating, and essentially have to get lucky. Which we did in baseball, because we have some guys willing to throw money at it COMBINED with our historical tradition. See, you can't just throw money at something without the muscle to back it up.......exhibit A is MSU football.

Just who is it that has been President of MSU while we have been "just floating"? But Keenum is the "right guy"? Do you even listen to yourself?

Shut up. I meant that you essentially have to have a lifer who is committed, or else leadership just changes and some hot shot who wants to do things short term. Keenum has done this sort of thing before. But again, may take some type of athletic advisory board to really stand it up.

Wins are great and make the alumni and fans happy and proud. But at what cost? "Whatever it costs" is not the answer. And wins from Vick and from Kiffin do not actually pay the bills, and do not result in what most people think it does.

They hired an elite coach in 2019/20 cycle. We didn’t. Pair that with Keith Carter vs John cohen and you have what we have
You’re leaving out the part where Leach went 9-4, finished ranked in the top 20, beat Ole Miss and his team won a New Years bowl game.

Youre leaving out the part where Leach passed away, was replaced with a Meathead named Arnett who fired Leachs entire staff and changed the offense the senior led team had run for four years with a Barbay garbage offense and went 1-7 in the sec. meathead was fired during the season and then replaced with Lebby who has went 1-15 in the sec.

we shot ourselves in both feet repeatedly. We have dumb boosters and incompetent Keenum to blame.

Ole Miss has Carter and smart boosters.

While ole Miss was in the sugar bowl in year 2 of Kiffin we were losing 34-7 to a bad Texas tech team in the liberty bowl of year 2 Leach. Sure we got them in 22 but they would’ve beaten us in 23. Leach scored 15 points against Golding in 3 years btw. Kiffin was and is the better hire not difficult to see even for the air raid cult

2023 predictions miss Cleo, about as credible as the rest of your post

the “blame the deceased HOF coach“ stuff has just about run out of steam. Nobody buys that BS

Leach had 16-17 starters returning and more seniors than anyone in the sec returning off a 9 win team , with 8 home games. It took a real moron to 17 that up, congrats

Sure we would’ve won 8 again in 2023 still doesn’t refute my point that Kiffin was better and they would have beaten us again that year anyways

We are light years behind them. Have to call a spade a spade. Just look on the field and the difference in athletes is enormous. Can’t pretend it hasn’t happened. Not sure we have any answers either. If coachin staffs mean anything we are toast for a while.

Yeah. And anyone who thinks that just because Kiffin is gone that’s gonna change is fooling themselves. We have a LOT of work to do to get our house in order. And we’re staying the course with people who have no business being at an SEC school.

I don't agree. A true identity encompassing athletics and academics is good for all. Ask Oxford.

Athletics is a large portion of a school's identity in the South whether people like that or don't.

But at what cost. That's some exponentially expensive pride and vanity. Whatever it costs to feel special and not less than isn't the answer.

No one other the students, alumni and fans care after the last game. Unless you win it all. Then others care and the millions spent aren't a zero sum game.

Quite the expensive hobby.

I can't explain more how athletics is as much a part of a university's identity in the south as academics. The examples are there - Tuscaloosa, Oxford, Auburn. I haven't been to the others in a while. It's galvanizing and all encompassing.

Booster's wallets matter right now, but it is tough for me to say they matter more than coaching.
Seems like its one of those situations where you almost need to have both.

A good coach and staff is able to not just make good decisions on the field to help ensure games are won(or not lost), but keep the locker room positive and keep a group with a lot of emotion and self-interest moving in the same productive direction.
That is a very difficult thing to do, since it all magnifies at the highest level.

Seems foolish to invest thirty million into the hands of a guy who is clueless on how to build a roster intelligently and can not evaluate talent.

you have to first get the Head Coach with experience and a plan, then invest thirty million.

Here's a plan, lets invest $100M and finish 3rd. Whatever makes the alumni and fans and students happy, triple whatever it costs. Getting to the playoffs and feeling important and better than other teams is worth several billion.

You are trumpeting that like it's a good thing. It's not. I love athletics but a university isn't supposed to be a minor league farm club for the NFL. It's an educational institution.

It is good. It is good for all - the education side, the athletics side, the local community. They all feed one another in a continuous circle.

In no way are athletics and academics polarizing to one another. They are not at odds at all. They should be viewed as a part of the whole and when in concert good things happen.

Here's an example: Athletics is successful -> local business grows and expands -> an expanded and better local community attracts professors and students. And the circle continues.
