Marshall: Head coach Doc Holliday will not return. Holliday said in a statement that the president would not extend his contact, which expires this summer. The 63-year-old Holliday went 85-54 in 11 seasons, winning three division titles and a C-USA championship in 2014. The Thundering Herd went 7-3 and won the division this year, but they ended the season on a three-game losing streak after reaching No. 21. Holliday was the C-USA coach of the year.

Has to be a back story to this...early rumors are Justice got involved? No idea if that is true or not...but a surprising development from Huntington...can't wait for more of this to get out.

Supposedly, the BOG didn't care for Doc, or Hamrick as well. It all started with former players getting the shaft from the athletic department a few years back during a reunion of one of the 1AA championship teams. Many prominent former players stopped having anything to do with the program, like Troy Brown, Leftwich, Pennington, Moss, and others.

Chad is having nothing to do with the Marshall football program????
really???
Chad married a gal I’ve known since we were both kids. I’ve talked with him on a few occasions when he was visiting. I know her family pretty well. If they’ve pissed that guy off, that’s really saying something. He’s a class guy who just likes the simple life and treats people right.

As for Doc and Hamrick, one wasn’t ever even a coordinator and the other failed at ECU (Steve Logan firing was a disaster) and UNLV (though everyone outside of Tark failed there).

I never got the appeal of Doc’s resume’ & hiring as a HBC or even AHBC. He sat in a press box with Jeff Mullen for 2 seasons and didn’t kill him. That told me he either liked bubble screens & QB sneaks after multiple motion/shifts or he really really didn’t know offense well at all.

Good luck to them all.

Chad is very limited when it comes to the program. Will be interesting to see if his son commits to Marshall next year. Chad is currently his high school coach in Lexington.

You know very well that this is all on Hamrick. He hired Doc for ONE REASON ONLY. That was to embarrass WVU with Bill Stewart as HFC. He almost pulled it off until Tron fumbled.

Hammrick will be gone next.
Correct, based on what some in the know have been stating for well over a month now.

Also, I apologize for the kid who is attempting to hijack your thread. Seems I'm now the bullseye of his attention, now that his other play toy is on an extended break.

Story is Herd had someone in mind before the booting already and his name is Lambert.

But also some outlandish rumors of Gerard Parker as HC, Dontae Wright as DC and Ja'Juan Seider as OC.

If that's the route they take, then that proves it was more about conflicting personalities than anything else.

Herd should just recognize itself as a stepping stone (like most G5 schools do), and hire a decent FCS head coach. Most of them don't make much money, so the Herd could afford to pay them $400 to $500k and that would still be a huge raise for anybody they get. But, they're probably like Michigan, and have to be lame and go with a Marshall Man.

Carlin went to Texas Tech and then to South Carolina. Bowden went to Florida State. Rich Fraud went to Xichigan. The only one who left and took a step down was Holgy.

What about your buddy riflearm? He would make a dandy coach. He certainly has the ego for it.

I would like Sean Lewis from Kent State. My guess is we end up with a former position coach like Hartley - currently at Georgia, Seider who I think is still at Penn State, or Furrey who is currently in the NFL

Of course The dream is Leftwich, but I figure he’s headed for an nfl HC position.

I don't see Leftwich leaving the NFL for any G5 job. Maybe one of the P5 Blue Bloods. Seider???? Running Back OC at PSU. He prolly has his sights higher than a CUSA job. Same with Hartley.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Herd settles for someone like Lambert. Also wouldn't surprise me if Parker decided to be the next Herd coach as he wants to be a HC. Whoever they select is entering a dumpster fire.

From what I know about Pennington & it is really from the wife’s side of the family is he has no interest in college coaching or giving up his time and privacy for any big job in college or pro. The guy is well spoken and could also work on any network as a football analyst but he’s not interested in that kind of life either. That Christian School his kids go to and he coaches at is good enough for him. It’s called contentment.

As for Marshall& their HBC search:
The thing about firing a HBC is you should never do it at any P5 or G5 school unless the new HBC is already signed with a backup in case the signed guy balks. Otherwise the longer it drags on, the less of a position of strength the school has. The most famous blunder of this I ever saw was waaaay back when Nebraska fired Frank Solich (AD Pedersen fired him by putting a memo under his door stating as much and then public ally stating “this program will not seep into mediocrity”). 4 HBCs then turned that job down and they settled on Bill Callahan who had never even coached in college. Nebraska 17 years & 4 coaches later (I think it was at the end of the 03 season) has never been as good as when Frank Solich was FIRED. Tennessee more recently has followed the Nebraska plan too.

I once heard an AD say the most basic and common sense statement you’ll hear, ‘For every sport & HBC I got on campus, I got 5 names in my pocket to fill their job in case something happens. #1 is my top choice down to #5 who can do the job and will definitely take it but isn’t as popular of a hire. As an AD if I don’t have that, I’m not doing my job. And for an AD to use a search firm or committee to hire someone means the AD is not doing the job either.’
