If you were to go position by position down this lineup, I don’t think you’d pick a single one of these kids to be the all time MSU great at their position.

A backup catcher at 1B, G5 transfer at 2B, small freshman at SS, struggled SS at 3B, carousel in LF… but collectively this TEAM did what none of our greatest could do. They won the last game.

I hope we go on to win a closet full of these big trophies, but these kids will forever be the ones that did it for us first. They’re legends. Forever.

I started to think about some of our squads and amazing players over the years that I can equivocally say are better top to bottom when you look at the players themselves, but sometimes, there's that "IT" factor where everyone has their role, knows their role, and plays to and sometimes above that role, even picking up the slack for others. That's what the guys did this year. And they will be our greatest team fielded to date because of that.

Our history as a program has been the better our talent the worse our luck. We've had a lot of relatively lesser teams get hot but just not have the talent to push all the way through. This year was a good mix of fortune and talent, and that's basically what every CWS winner is.

I told some people in my office a few days ago that this was probably the least likely team to win it all that we've ever sent to Omaha. I would never call them the worst we've sent, only the least likely to win it

I agree. This probably isn't even one of the 5 best teams we've had, maybe not one of the 10 best. But this team just worked and fought and scratched for everything all year and never gave up. There were a lot of heroes in maroon last night.
