2 massive upsets in AAA Round 1:

106: NE-2 Luke Sirianni lost -- his only other loss of the year was to Nate Desmond at regionals.

152: NE-1 Dagen Condomitti got majored 11-2.
Wow. I wouldn’t have guessed on Condomitti losing, much less getting majored.

Wow. Man, I can’t make states this year but will miss it. Always so much fun craziness.

Anything of note at AA? Didn’t get to peruse the bracket yet.

AA opening session went largely as expected. Notable results:

106: SE-5 Hartranft (Berks Catholic) dec NE-1 Wade (Sullivan County) 5-1
126: NE-4 Granahan (Benton) dec SE-1 Hontz 2-0 SV
152: SW-4 Richey (Quaker Valley) dec NW-1 Kettering (Reynolds) 5-3
160: SW-4 Hirak (Derry) MD NW-1 Zimmerman (Johnsonburg) 11-0
160: SE-4 Glessner (BIshop McDevitt) dec NE-1 Schneider (Lackawanna Trail) 2-0
172: SW-4 Close (BEA) dec NW-1 Covell (Titusville) 1-0
215: NW-2 Rafferty (Brookville) F Mahaffey (Saucon Valley, S6, 26-1) 3:33

Most of those were upsets by seed, maybe not really upsets. Wade was a little surprising but 106 is always such a crapshoot, especially in AA. Mahaffey getting stuck was definitely surprising.

Quarters to watch:
106: Gill vs Smith
113: Wentzel vs Robison; Jackson vs Bainey
120: Pepe vs Hornack
132: Barvitskie vs Bollman
145: Maag vs Watson; Gill vs Wagner
152: Arrington vs Duggan
172: Lawrence vs Lear
285: Robell vs Ulrich; Johnson vs Muzika

Some takeaways:
- Major upset by Campbell at 113 over returning S3 Chappell.

Interesting that Nazareth, with only 2 in the semis, is leading the AAA Team race.

They had wrestlers at most weights, and I think all but 3 are still alive in the consolations (in addition to the 2 in the semis).

BECA is in 2nd place.

Nazareth went 3-0 vs Beca in consis. That's gotta be part of their lead.

AA semis:
106: Gill TF Hubert 15-0, 4:18; Seidel MD Sentipal 11-0
113: Bradley dec Botero 4-1; Wentzel dec Jackson 7-2 UTB
120: Pepe dec Bainey 10-5; Weiss dec Vargo 7-5
126: Johnson dec Granahan 5-2; Palmer dec Milheim 4-3
132: Reinsel dec Barvitskie 2-0 SV; Chletsos dec Heckman 5-2
138: Pierce TF Boni 16-0, 3:32; Crookham MD Wirnsberger 10-1
145: Harer dec Maag 11-4; Alderfer dec Wagner 1-0
152: Arrington F Richey 1:04; Christie dec Deem 6-4
160: MacKay dec Smith 6-2; Garcia dec Dubler 3-0
172: Lawrence F Parker 3:43; Jones dec Garcia 5-4
189: Karpinski dec Cutchember 8-5; Cory dec Stewart 4-0
215: Pitzer F Rafferty 1:23; Morrison dec Linkerhof 1-0
285: Robell F Sottolano 5:33; Johnson MD Perrine 10-2

Some observations:
- M2 having a great tourney.
- Crookham is wrestling well, but not like a national PFP top 5 guy. Pierce is also wrestling very well. Their final could be much more competitive than expected.
- Jones won on a stall call with 1:45 left.
- This was Pitzer's longest match so far.
- For the 2nd straight year, PA has a freshman HWT finalist. If Johnson wins, he would be the first ever FR champ.

Notable in consis:
- 120: S2 Hornack vs S3 Vargo in the consi semis.
- 172: Lear vs Garcia in the consi semis, for their approximately 37th mtg of the year. This should be the 3rd place match.
- 285: Muzika F 2:03 -- reminder, HS pins are a 2-count.

There's a joke behind this -- the first paragraph is basically what Mifflin County 113 Nic Allison said about why he doesn't pay attention to rankings.

yeah, I probably should have explained it. But props to PaPower for their AAA rankings.

Nasdeo lost in the semis to Jacaruso, 4-0.

He gets in the consi semis -- once again -- Carson Wagner from Northampton. Do these guys ever stop facing each other?

Big upset in the other semi -- returning champ Kaedyn Williams lost to Beca FR Cole Campbell 6-2. Campbell was NE-3, 32-10 going into the match.

also in AAA, Asher Cunningham fell in the consolation quarters to Jacob Houpt (Canon-McMillan). Kind of a tough draw in that Houpt had also beaten him in his opening round match in the Championship bracket. Asher will face Troy Hohman (Penn Trafford) in the 7th place match.

AAA 113 seeds:
1 – Kaedyn Williams, SC-1, Manheim Township SO, 24-1, S1 (Ohio State)
2 – Zach Jacaruso, NE-1, Delaware Valley JR, 36-1, S2
3 – Cael Nasdeo, NW-1, Williamsport JR, 30-3, S2 (Penn State)
4 – Tyler Chappell, SW-1, Seneca Valley JR, 33-4, S3
5 – Tony Burke, SE-1, Council Rock North SR, 34-5, S7

Others – top half:
Nic Allison, NW-2, Mifflin County SR, 33-3, S8
Tahir Parkins, NE-2, Nazareth FR, 31-4

Others – bottom half:
Carson Wagner, NE-4, Northampton JR, 25-7, S6-S5
Nico Tocci, SC-2, Warwick SR, 38-3 (Air Force)
Darius McMillon, SW-2, Peters Township FR, 29-3

This is the craziest weight at states this year, with 3 returning state finalists and 7 returning medalists. Then add top freshman Parkins (2nd at Beast of the East), Tocci (beat Williams at districts), and McMillon (brother of state finalist Donovan, now Florida safety).

And while growth rates always vary in HS, the top 4 seeds all return next year. And Cole Campbell (BECA), who upset Williams in the semis to make it to the final is just a freshman. Plus, the semifinalists at 106 are all underclassmen (and thus likely still growing), so 113 could be every bit as difficult next year.

This is a heartbreaker for Kasak. He’s a fierce competitor and eats, sleeps, and breaths wrestling, and has since he was very young, but he’s the most polite, humble young man off the mat. He’s also an M2 kid and won Fargo Silver last summer. His future is bright and he’ll be back. This will, no doubt, motivate him.
