The first weekend, they played Texas (#1) twice, losing both.
I watched the 2nd match and UT is scary good. If Texas stays focused, they will be there at the end.

OSU's 3rd loss was to San Diego.
They have beaten BYU, Louisville and Georgia Tech.
Every match has been against a team in the current rankings - not many tuneup matches.
They will be well prepared for conference play.
Going to be a fun season in the Big 10.

Great PSU has moved into top ten at #9 and is still undefeated.
BUT teams ahead of them have multiple losses,
** including Standford at #4 (5-3); PSU defeated Stanford
** Minnesota #8 (5-3); and Stanford defeated Minnesota
** the real shocker is Ohio State at #7 (4-4). WTF!!!
**Herbstreit OSU eye test now bleeds over to WVB???

As a casual fan, I was wondering what the dedicated fans think of KSC’s progress so far.

I'm also a casual fan (haven't seen any matches thus far), but I judge the results with a mixed review.
Great to beat ranked Stanford and ranked Oregon.
Great to be undefeated through the non-conference schedule.
Not so great to drop some sets to some of the non-conference opponents, but the matches that concern me in this regard were early in the schedule. The team was really just getting used to each other.
The real tests start this weekend. I hope for 2 wins, but they got to play the matches.
Respect all, fear none.

while she was on the staff last year, she didn't become head coach until Dec./Jan (can't remember which one). In that context, it's going to take several years to get a true read on her, to see how PSU recruiting does, how she adjusts in matches, etc.

That said, with the cupboard somewhat bare on the team, and a few key PSU players going in the portal after Coach retired last Dec., I think she's done a great job in:

- assembling a coaching staff
- bringing in some key transfers
- integrating the new players with the existing players
- keeping the doors open, so to speak, to all former players

It's almost impossible to replace a legend. It would have been much nicer for PSU and for her if there had been a plan in place. As it is, she looked to be PSU's 2nd choice as coach, and yet she didn't appear to take that as an insult, and she's really put a lot of energy into building back the PSU WVB brand.

I question if they have enough talent to compete with a couple of the top teams this year, but they've surprised me with how well they've played at times.

So far, I think Coach Katie has done better than most would have expected.

I have not seen any matches either, but I do like to follow the stats. So far, I like what I see with Blocking and they are Top 5 so far in the country.
I'll be curious to see how they do with service, serve receive, digs and passing as conference play begins.
Here's Indiana and Michigan schedules so far. Indiana has served well so far and Michigan has kept Opponents hitting at a low average, just as Penn State has.

Indiana is awful. Michigan is better but they have only one decent win(North Carolina). Penn State has been tested with a tougher schedule and has no losses. Stanford and Oregon are much better than any team Michigan has played. I expect two more wins this weekend.

Not sure how good Michigan’s win over UNC is. The Tarheels lost to Colorado State who is, at best, up and down this year.

They can definitely compete with the top teams. However they may not beat them - Yet. Having said that, Katie is doing a fantastic job. In just her first year she has assembled a very strong team capable of giving problems to the best in the county. The girls are playing well together and having fun, something I don’t think we saw under Rose in his last few years. They have won some 5 set matches instead of folding at the end.
