Cats have outscored opponents 22-4 in the last 4 road games. They were smart and rested/got healthy some players in the 2nd half of the season and didn't worry so much about their record or home ice. Why should they?

Final today, Western Conference Final, Game 3: Edmonton 6, Dallas 1

Dallas had more shots on goal, 34 to Edmonton’s 24, but the NHL rewards the team that puts more of them in the net. Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman each had two goals for the Oilers.

Edmonton leads the series 2-1.

Panthers is the perfect name for this team. When big cats smell blood, it gets worse, then it's over.

5-0 FLA is my bold prediction for tonight, and there will be a lot of rats on the ice.

Florida Panthers: Good Guys who Don’t ‘Shotgun Beers at Church’

FORT LAUDERDALE — Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice added another gem to his long collection of golden quotes on Sunday morning after being asked about his team’s humility off of the ice despite their ferociousness on it.

The Panthers are, to be sure, one of the most hated teams in the NHL due to their aggressive, take-no-prisoners style.

They certainly are not popular in some parts of their own state, much less in Canada or North Carolina.

Yet after Saturday’s 6-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes to pull within a game of a third straight trip to the Stanley Cup Final, Brad Marchand was talking about eating ice cream during intermission.

“Is that a fact?” Maurice said when asked about Marchand’s penchant for frozen treats.

“I know he said it, that doesn’t make it a fact. You have video evidence? No? This is a conspiracy theory.’’

Matthew Tkachuk, one of the league’s top agitators, spoke Sunday about going after Sebastian Aho on Saturday two days after he took out Sam Reinhart with a low hipcheck which appears to have injured Reinhart’s knee.

“I don’t really look at it as intent or intimidation at all,’’ Tkachuk said. “It’s just sticking up for teammates. We’re a family in here. It could happen to anybody and there are 20 guys racing to stick up for a teammate. That’s just how our team is built.’’

Moments later, Maurice told a story about Tkachuk seeing a young fan who is battling cancer outside the locker room and stopping for a chat. Maurice even introduced them, joking that he quickly realized Tkachuk certainly needed no introduction. So, Paul, how could a team seemingly this unlikeable be so, well, likeable?

It is all in the context of where you run into them. On the ice? Not good guys.

Off of it, pretty chill bunch.

”I’ll ask you two questions, and they might be personal so you don’t have to answer them,’’ Maurice responded. “Have you ever shotgunned a beer? Have you ever been to church … or something spiritual? OK. Would you shotgun a beer at church? That doesn’t make you a hypocrite. There is a context and a place for all things.

“I will tell you they are honest, these men are honest. That personality is all real. I hated Matthew Tkachuk, that’s a little too strong, when I was in Winnipeg. Then you meet him, and you’re like ‘what a wonderful human being.’ “They are hard on the ice, they are. But that’s driven by how they feel about each other. They don’t want to let the other guy down. There’s a caring about them. These guys are different. Barkov’s personality is our room. Sam Bennett and his wife are raising money for cats and dogs. They are really nice people.

“And then the puck drops. Sometimes you say a prayer, sometimes you shotgun a beer. That’s like our team.’’

As for Maurice’s ice cream preference, he said his go-to is “something with cherry in it. Black cherry, raspberry. That would be good.’

No Sam Reinhart, Niko Mikkola, or AJ Greer tonight for the Panthers in Game 4.

Don't matter.

I see my pal TJ Oshie did some guest commentary last night and seemed pretty good at it. Looks like his next gig I think; I was surprised to learn they are sticking around DC for the time being. I guess it's either commentary or golfing - dude can hit.

He looks good for 39 and a career in hawkey.

espn showed Oshie highlights leading up to his appearance on the set last night. Impressive stick handling and shots. Then I looked at his career stats and was underwhelmed. He’s missed a lot of games over the years, so I guess he’s been injury-prone.

Tonight at 8 p.m. EDT on TNT/TruTV/Max:

Eastern Conference Final, Game 5: Florida vs. Carolina

Florida leads the series 3-1. The Panthers had a chance to sweep Carolina in Sunrise the other night. It didn’t work out for them. Now they have to put that loss and an undesired trip to Raleigh aside and focus on closing it out. Can Florida regain the momentum or is Carolina really in it?

He’s super popular here and really just a super nice guy. His kids are the kindest, best behaved I’ve seen. He gets a lot of mileage out of the Olympic shootout and should. This seems to suit him.

FLA took a night off Monday.
They were outplayed for the first time in series. They didn’t take night off.

Fla is fortunate Canes have not played with that urgency all series or likely series would be tied at 2-2. Shame on Canes for not playing like that previously. It should not have taken until first elimination game for them to show some grit and show up.

I could see Canes forcing a Game 6, but they are not going to reverse sweep Fla.

They have guys hurt. They don't mind playing on the road obviously as they fired their old coach for winning the President's Cup.

Everybody has guys hurt right now. Fla currently has one of biggest bandwagon fan bases. Wasn’t too many yrs ago, staff working in arena was close to number of fans in the stands.

Only thing I like about Panthers is Mo. Great guy and thrilled he got a Cup.

I'm not a big hockey fan, but have gone to games since the old arena in Miami - maybe 3-4/year. They were smart to get out of Miami. Sunrise is not a bad drive from Palm Beach or even Martin County. Miami-Dade was never going to support that team, just like they don't support the Marlins.

Final: Florida 5, Carolina 3

Florida wins the series 4-1 and will play Edmonton or Dallas in the Stanley Cup Final.

Sam Bennett took a late penalty for Florida with the Panthers leading 4-3. Carolina pulled the goalie for a 6-on-4 but could not score. As the penalty expired, Bennett came out of the box, chased down a loose puck in Carolina‘s end, and tucked in an empty-netter to ice the game for Florida. Wild ending.

2nd period intermission: Edmonton 4, Dallas 2

Dallas got within one and had the crowd rocking, but McDavid found a loose puck near center ice and used his speed on a breakaway. It was a blur. The Stars backup goalie didn’t stand a chance.

Thanks for updates Bob. That round was blehhhh at best.

Prefer to see Edmonton not win and get SC #6. Nothing against their current stars, just the 80s/90 editions had all that success getting the 5 (same as the Pens, and they aren’t adding any in the foreseeable future).

We had several overtime games in the earlier rounds, but the conference finals lacked overtime and were mostly blowouts. Disappointing. Hopefully, the Stanley Cup Finals games will be closer.
