I commented on Michael Mercado in a couple of Spring Training posts. He is the callup with Walker going on the IL. He will remind you a lot of Brogdon; tall glass of water. He never developed in the Rays system which was a concern, but he threw it well all spring and he caught my interest. Had good #’s in LHV. I’d have to go back to the spring scorebook, but off memory he had a lot of bright moments when called on.

So there was a number of posts earlier in the season about the Phils not being very good against teams playing above .500. With baseball, it's always better to let things play out a bit before jumping to conclusions.

Some general stats:
AL teams playing > .500: 7 (out of 15)
NL teams playing > .500: 6 (out of 15)

A closer look at how those teams are doing, record wise, and against teams above 500:

TeamSeason RecordRecord against >.500 Teams
Phillies52-2615-9
Braves43-3312-15
Brewers46-3317-17
Cardinals40-3712-15
Dodgers49-3115-9
Padres42-4118-16
Yankees52-2822-17
Orioles49-2924-14
Red Sox43-3613-23
Guardians50-2618-9
Twins43-3512-21
Royals43-3713-21
Mariners45-3614-19

So if you look at those 7 teams, only 2 of them (the Orioles and the Guardians) have really good records against teams playing above .500. And we're not quite to the half-way point of the season, so there's a lot of baseball to be played, and the above stats will change.

The Phillies are 15-9 against teams that are above .500. For less than half a season of data, I think they're doing just fine against the better teams.

Well done Tom!

It's time for Bob Costas to hang it up. Watching Yanks-Mets and 3 different times he said that's a ball, but all 3 were strike calls...and no one in the booth said a word.
