Merrifield and Dahl released. Weston Wilson brought up from Lehigh Valley. Merrifield and Dahl just didn't perform per expectations. Wilson is having a solid season at Lehigh Valley (18 HR and 55 RBI). Maybe we see some Edmundo in the OF, too.

Definitely needed a little more pop in the outfield and neither of these guys was measuring up.

We'll see what Wilson can do and we'll be looking in the market before the deadline.

Just a lousy game. Ranger, once again, was giving up hits/runs. The Phils "left a village on the bases" (John Kruk's line on the TV broadcast) in the early innings. The buzz from the Dodgers series is no longer present.

Could be the emotional letdown after the Dodgers series plus a little overconfidence against a bad A’s team.

I thought Ranger would be pulled an inning earlier but he managed to come out for a 1-2-3. Lots of blame to go around. Shaky pitching and an offense which couldn’t take advantage of the A’s starter who was trying his best to give away some runs. One of those crap games you just forget about and move on from.

it certainly seemed so. Baseball is a funny game, as the season is so long. Today, the Fightins appear to having a bullpen game (of sorts), so the buzz could evaporate pretty quickly. Still, nobody could argue that their 1st half of the season (or pre-All-Star break season) was anything less than a great success.

I'm not a fan of bullpen games since they can burn the pen out. But being the last game before the break, it's a good day for it if it has to happen. The A's starter is a young righty with a 5+ ERA. The Red Sox hammered him in his last start but in the start before that he threw a five hit complete game shutout against the Angels. Hopefully the Phils can jump on him early.

Apparently the Home Run Derby was rescheduled from tomorrow to today at CBP.

What a forgettable game and series against an awful A’s team. Mercado clearly isn’t ready even if he was asked to pitch today more than is ideal. Dominguez did his part too.

It can be such a fine line between a major league pitcher, and a minor league pitcher. Mercado made a lot of excellent pitches today. But his misses (non-excellent pitches) were crushed by the A's. After last Sunday's effort, I don't think the plan was to start Mercado. But with Wheeler's back issue, it was a viable plan. Mercado has a lot of potential -- only time will tell if he becomes a dependable MLB pitcher.
