Will he be ready by July? And do they need him by July?

He has filthy stuff, but is understandably inconsistent as he gets back into pitching and adjusts to Triple-A.

I’m with @MrTailgate on this one. Don’t rush Painter. Next spring is when they really need him. They can get him some bigs experience late this season if he’s ready.

The comments from ?? (either Topper or Dombroski) a day or two ago indicated that late July was the earliest for Painter.

He's an amazing talent, who I look forward to seeing pitch for the Fightins. That said, I still think he needs work on his secondary pitches. In his most recent game (I think that was the one), the best player in the opposing lineup had 3 doubles off of Painter. His fastball is elite. But in the bigs, there are too many really good hitters that if shown the fastball too often, they will feast on it (no matter how fast you throw it).

I'm not sure that there is a correct answer on whether they need him by July. Assuming Nola is back by then, and approaches anything like his norm, they'll likely have too many starters as it is. Wheeler and Luzardo are 1 & 2. Nola should be either 2 or 3, but that wasn't the case so far this season. Sanchez is currently #3. Suarez is currently number 4. Walker, in Nola's absence, has been returned to the rotation, but he had nothing last night. So Nola's return would mean Walker would return to the bullpen. So whether they need him or not seems to be dependent upon how Nola pitches when he finishes his rehab, and how the rest of the starters are, health wise. The Fightins have made some indications that they could go to a 6 starter rotation when Painter arrives, though they do acknowledge that they may have to tweak that a bit, as some of the starters do not like to pitch as infrequently as a 6-man rotation would dictate (if everyone went their normal turn).

The other variable is that assuming Harper comes back healthy, the Fightins are all in on this season. In that context, you have to use all your ammunition, wherever that may be.

I still think Painter is further away from being ready than has been projected, but I could be wrong.

I turned on the game 18 minutes ago, just in time to see the first pitch of the fourth inning and it’s still the top of the fourth.

Just got done making burgers and steaks on the grill, and was looking forward to turning on the game to see what’s up

Trea Turner and Kerkering blowing another lead in the 7th. Here comes loss #4 in a row. So glad I am watching them again. 😳
