There’s risk on both ends of every trade. The top 5 prospect that Phillies fans are unwilling to give up, has never played an inning of major league ball and may never contribute much once they do.
Mick Abel has.

Alvarado back August 19

Still makes sense to pick up some additional help
Alvarado can’t pitch in the playoffs. That’s a big part of their problem. Topper has forgotten more than I know about baseball, but sliding Walker and Luzardo to the bullpen in the playoffs isn’t a fix. They need a couple of big arms.

Alvarado is ineligible to pitch in the post season due to his suspension.
Thanks for the reminder of the terms of his suspension.

Yes, need more relief help than his regular season return to get the Phillies to the WS.

This didn’t age well after Robert got lit up in the bottom of the 9th. The bullpen is a steaming pile and Topper knows it.
Robert WAS NOT MENTIONED in that article. No one is counting on him in high leverage situations. There's a reason he was in, and that was the 6-0 score. Annnnnd, Thomson said he's dealing with a nail issue in the postgame.

I'd like a bullpen arm, preferably a high end closer, as much as anyone. But if the price is too high, and it's a seller's market, moving Ranger and Luzardo to the pen and rolling with Wheeler, Sanchez and (a presumably healthy and well-rested) Nola isn't the worst thing in the world. Plus, when rosters expand, Abel and Painter could be in Philly as well.

No, I wouldn't make that trade. But I fully admit that I never am in favor of trading your top prospect, or even your top 5 prospects, unless one of them seems to be blocked from the Phillies roster by a young star at the same position.

Haha same. I always like to dream that they’re the next superstars. Maybe that’s how I got into recruiting the more I think about it? Haha 🤔

Nice draw here if it ever happens.

One of my best friends is pretty high up with the Cubs nowadays in their scouting department. He’s their VP of Pro acquisitions, so he’s played a big role in helping Jed Hoyer build this year’s team.

I’ve been telling him for weeks now that the Cubs vs Phillies feels inevitable. He doesn’t want to acknowledge it. Baseball guys are always superstitious.

That series would have me all messed up in the head. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be screaming for the Phils, either at the TV or at CBP, but if there’s one team I quietly pull for, it’s the Cubs because of Garrett.

Their entire staff was on the last year of their contracts. If they didn’t make real progress this year, they were all out.

The Cubs just renewed Jed Hoyer the other day, so I’m quietly happy to see the Cubs doing well. Just not against the Phils.

Milwaukee scares me.

FWIW, the draws as shown are accurate, but it's not as though the slots are even close to being certain.

NL East:
NY Mets: 62-46
Phillies: 61-46 (0.5 games back)

NL Central:
Milwaukee: 64-43
Cubs: 62-45 (2 games back)

NL West:
LA Dodgers: 63-45
San Diego: 59-29 (4 games back)

Agreed....Phillies aren't giving up Painter and good for them!
