Alvarado pitched 0.2 innings in that series. He gave up 2 earned runs and 2 walks in that time frame for an ERA of 27. Hoffman appeared in 3 games with an ERA of 40.50 Strahm also appeared in 3 games and had an ERA of 18.

Not over yet, but the Phils got another nice RISPy performance in the top of the 7th to go up 3-1. I didn’t see that coming with how Degrom had been cruising.

A good win:
  • On the road, at the Rangers, where the Phils have struggled
  • Big 3 of Turner, Schwarber, and Harper had 0 hits
  • Other guys picked up the slack -- Kepler, Marsh, Stott, Bader with key hits
  • Starter Luzardo had a solid outing -- 7 hits, 1 run, only 1 walk in 6 innings
  • With a one run lead in the 9th, the Phillies are able to bring in a great closer -- 3 up, 3 down, win

I took note of the history made of the first female ump in a MLB game. A couple of years back a seamhead friend of mine told me of three projects he was pursuing. One of the top two ideas was a book he planned to do on a woman making the progression through umpiring. He had many discussions with her and felt she had an excellent chance of getting to the show. Tonight that woman my friend was following for a potential book project years back made her MLB debut.

The stories of the grind to become an ump at the MLB level are pretty inspiring. Each ump has gone through a lot of personal sacrifice and have probably considered giving it up at times. Their path isnt much different from the players journies.

One of baseball’s greatest story tellers is a guy named Andy Strasberg. He had a big role in Phil Cuzzi becoming a MLB umpire. The same story, grinding through the process and finally getting the call. The cool thing is that Andy got a photographer when Cuzzi got the call and had the guy go along the rail where the umps enter the field. He wanted a pic of the first time Phil stepped onto a major league field. He then gave the pic to Phil. I’ve mentioned to Andy that he needs to do a book and tell his stories. They range from his relationship to Ted Williams to Cole Hamels. Andy does have a book on his lifelong hero Roger Maris and the relationship they developed over decades. Andy was at a baseball dinner and someone gave him a bag saying he would best appreciate the contents. It was a Maris game worn jersey from the 61 season. Andy donated it to the Hall and I believe the exhibit notes Andy’s contribution. Andy is proud that his name is in the Hall.

Random thoughts from last night-

1- Every game I watch, I’m saddened by how bad the umpiring is. I don’t know who had the plate last night but whoever did had a hell of a night. I don’t think I saw one player other than Sosa turn on a ball strike call. The cool thing was that you could hear the ump say in or out after most pitches he did not call strikes. The catchers and pitchers could hear that which helped them get a clear reading of his strike zone. He had a great night, whoever had the plate. And Edmundo, I think it was a strike.

2- I don’t think anyone quite understood exactly what they were getting in the trade for The Durantula. Players know game and you can tell how much it means to them knowing the hammer that is coming out of the door to close. That’s a huge boost. But i was not aware of exactly how dominant this guy can be. He has a ridiculous bag of tricks. If he’s right, the combo of gas, gas with devilish late movement, and the slider on top which screws these guys into the ground makes him as unhittable as I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t know how you hit this guy. Thanks Mr Dombrowski.

Alverado, at times, was nearly unhittable. But he also could have control issues at times. Duran is unlike any closer the Fightins have had in quite a few years. I thought this article from Scott Lauber in today's Philadelphia Inquirer did a good job of describing what the addition of Duran means for the Fightins.

I firmly believe umpiring has always been like this, but it wasn’t until the k-zone showed up and it provided proof, that people really started complaining.

All things considered, he wasn’t bad last night.

FYSA, average accuracy is 92-94%

Thanks for posting- I’ll give it a read later today.

Weston Wilson ties things up at 1 in the bottom of the 8th.

Treat Turner knocked Wilson in, as the Fightins take the lead, 2-1

And all of this occurred, with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th.

And Scwarber follows with a 2-run HR!!! 4-1, Fightins

Solid wins recently, but the Phils have had some very good luck. Past 4 games, opponent has 31 hits and only scored 6 runs.

Topper got lucky in the bottom of the 8th tonight with Robertson on the mound. I know why he did that, but it felt like an over think and it almost backfired.
