Romano sucks, he’s got to have pictures of Thompson blowing goats
Agree. The one small shred of a defense he has is that the inning should have been over with the AB prior to Andujar hitting the grand slam. A likely ground out by De La Cruz was turned it into an infield single by the defense. Romano also had two strike outs in the inning. At least he didn't come in and blow a lead. The Phils were going to lose anyway since the offense stunk.

But that's just the slimmest of a defense. He certainly hasn't done what the Phils signed him up to do. Nola, Alvarado, and Bohm can't come back soon enough for the stretch run.

The top of their order (overall) has been cool for longer than two games, Grant. The bottom carried them for a stretch with some real heroics by Schwarber.

Let’s see how they do in DC this weekend. It’s an opportunity to put together more wins.
First, not really. Turner has been consistent, Schwarber has been amazing, and JT looks great.
When the top of the order is humming, you will complain that the bottom of the order is a huge problem.
It's the ebbs and flows of a baseball team. Some guys are hot sometimes, others are hot at other times. You just don't want them to all go cold at the same time (like playoff time).

And how they do over a 4 game set in DC isn't going to tell me that much either. I'm looking at long term trends and how they are playing in September and hopefully beyond. Stop looking at small sample sizes.

It’s a long ******* season. They have been within the top five or six teams in wins all ******* season.

There is no great team this year (well Milwaukee is crazy right now) and the Phils are right there with anyone.

Interesting. I wonder if they stick with 6 for a bit. Extra rest for starters but is that one less arm in the pen?

From the below article:

As for the shift to a six-man rotation, Thomson wouldn’t commit to anything long term.

“Once for sure, and then we’ve got some other ideas about how to attack this thing as we move forward,” he said.

Zack Wheeler has recently dealt with shoulder soreness and his velocity was down last time out. Ranger Suarez’s season ERA has jumped from 2.15 to 3.28 over his past five starts.

The rotation has been a major strength for the Phils, whose starters have a National League-best 3.42 ERA. Thomson wants to be cautious about health and freshness.

“Just getting some of these guys some extra rest, because we’ve been grinding on them pretty hard all year,” he said. “The one downside to it is you’ve got to take somebody out of your bullpen, so you’re a little bit short there, but we’ll just have to figure it out.”

Also in the article: Alvarado is expected to join the team on Tuesday, so that's a fresh arm in the 'pen.

How is it justified to keep sending Castellanos out there every night?

He didn't play one day last week.

Season-long, he's #5 amongst the starters in AVG.

- Turner: .282
- Bohm: .278 (and he's on IR)
- Realmuto: .269
- Harper: .258
- Casty: .255
- Schwarber: .248
- Stott: .243

He has been struggling of late. His average:

- last 7 games: .154
- last 15 games: .228
- last 30 games: .248

If you look at his AVG by month:

- Aug.: .163
- July: .207
- Jun.: .276
- May: .300
- Apr.: .265

on that go ahead single, with 1 down, why wasn’t the IF in double play depth??

I wondered that as well. Turner would have fielded the ball if at double play depth. Would they have turned the double play? I'm not sure. Tena is pretty good (not elite) with regards to speed, so it's tough to say.

Kerkering falling behind in the count did not help.

Citing batting average in support of him? What is this, 1976?

Dude is at negative WAR because of his atrocious, bottom 5 in all of MLB defense. Does he make up for it with productivity at the plate? Hardly. 7th among today’s starters in OPS at a lusty .700 - beating out only Kepler and Stott.

The sooner we get rid of his contract, the better

Same lame game year after year. Harper seems to be in decline.
They’re streaky to the point of being extreme. They just won 5 of 6 or something like that and now lost 3 straight.

@Grant Green is right that it likely averages out to 95 wins over a season, but it feels like there’s even more luck involved with a deep playoff run for this lineup.

Hopefully, the starting rotation and bolstered bullpen swing things more in their favor.

Top 9th two out man on third and down a run, with the 3rd baseman almost in the grass I thought it was a perfect opportunity for the speedy Turner to lay down a bunt.

Recognize baseball is game of streaks but 2 runs on 10 hits??, c'mon man!!
