Madison Keyes upset in round one, and Medvedev too - crazy scene last night as a cameraman walked into the court causing a delay and replay of first serve for Medvedev’s opponent Bonzi. This is why the U.S. Open is great - like Vegas, it gets really good after dark…
Errani and Vavassori winning mixed made me happy though. Same with Collins and Harrison doing well. It wasn't just the best singles players dominating.Wow, Medvedev pulverized that racket! Never said anything like that.
New mixed double format is lame. Throw in some real doubles players like Pavic, Mahut, Siniakova and then it might be interesting.
Venus played well against a tough opponent last night. Muchova's pinpoint serving was too much for her.
Looking forward to seeing Jensen Brooksby play. He looks awkward out there, more like any NBA forward, but he gets the job done!
I get why they did it...more exposure, people actually watched and cared about mixed doubles, etc. But it does suck for those doubles specialists that were shut out. If they're heading in the same direction again next year, I'd love for them to go to 32 teams, and base 16 of them on doubles rankings, and 16 on singles rankings. That's the best of both worlds, and could just add one more day to the tournament (while both getting the exposure of the top players, and not shutting the door on the doubles specialists).Errani and Vavassori winning mixed made me happy though. Some fireworks at the end of the Ostapenko vs Townsend match. Sound like Ostapenko was pissed that Townsend didn't apologize about a let cord that occurred. They were seen in heated exchange at Osty's bench after the match and then Townsend whooping it up to get the crowk booing her. Ostapenko being a sore loser.
The I've seen about the Townsend/Ostapenko fight the more I think it's just that people, including Taylor, dislike Ostapenko. She's always been a bad loser and, yes, she's right that it's an unwritten rule to acknowledge a let cord (Sabalenka was angry with Anisimova about that during Wimbledon) but she overreacted.
I went to bed after the 4th...glad to see he survived. Same with Coco surviving her match. Early rounds are just about that...survivalThat would have been a crushing one for Tommy Paul to let slip away…glad he was able to pull it out.
Tiafoe now in a world of trouble.Shelton getting medical attention (which doesn't look good) as Tiafoe drops the first set...not great.
Honestly I more I watched the Townsend argument with Ostapenko the less I understand why Taylor did what she did. Why follow Ostapenko to her chair? Just ignore her or give her a meaningless sorry and walk away. I mean, Ostapenko wasn't wrong. It is an unwritten rule to simply acknowledge the let cord. Ostapenko (and Tsitsipas) overreacted but they weren't necessarily wrong...just petty. As an aside - I can’t remember any previous Open’s with this much nonsense. Tsitsipas complaining (and targeting his opponent) about an underhand serve, Ostapenko crying about Towsend not apologizing for a let ball (that she was able to play), and bonkers questions during the after match pressers.
And Tiafoe just lost after mounting a bit of a comeback. Ah well.

I do think Ostapenko would have done the same thing even if she won the match lol. You could tell after the point Ostapenko was livid.
Remember that Ostapenko's first language isn't English. I'm 100% confident by uneducated she meant "unaware of the unwritten rule". It's not like Ostapenko has a degree or anything. I'm not saying Ostapenko isn't also wrong--I just think Townsend following her to her chair was a mistake. Townsend handled it great after the incident though. Tough match for her tonight but I hope she plays well against Andreeva.Disagree about Ostapenko - it wasn’t a let ball winner; she was able to play it but lost the point. You don’t apologize for that kind of let. And you don’t call someone uneducated after the match because you lost. Tsitsipas is a legendary whiner so not surprising, but still. Lose with dignity.

And I do agree Tsitsipas and Ostapenko are both far from classy on the court so either criticizing others is a poor decision.
Americans really need Fritz to pull through tonight.
Probably not enough lolHow many shots of Morgan Riddle will we get with Fritz playing?

5 men have pretty much dominated tennis during that time period maybe throw in Murray and Stan.American men's tennis is officially dead. It's been 22 years and I can't see an answer in sight. This is just so depressing. These guys have all rolled over and died on their own home soil. Sad and embarrassing. I'm sick and tired of the excuses. At this point I have heard more than a dozen of them, from tennis being too expensive, to the balls being softer, to the courts being slower, to the rest of the world pumping more money into developing players, and it's all ********.
Why? Because the American women are alive, and well, and still winning majors like Coco did in Paris, even after the Williams sisters are gone
There are no excuses left for these guys. They suck.
We've got 6 guys in the top 32 right now. We don't have that dominant player, but we've got a deeper "pool" right now than we've had in a while...far from "officially dead".American men's tennis is officially dead. It's the same thing as years ago, none of them can win on the big stage. Mcenroe was asked point blank which one of them can win a major, his response was basically none of them, but he did say that IF anyone could it would be Shelton. Shelton looked bad today but maybe that was the injury, I don't know. All I know is that 22 years is a long enough time that there's no more excuses left. We've got 6 guys in the top 32 right now. In the past 4 majors, we've had a finalist and 3 semi-finalists. It's an overreaction to say that none of them "can win on the big stage" or that none of them could win a major. It's the same thing as years ago, none of them can win on the big stage. My rooting interest is pretty much 100% American-based (outside a handful of fringe guys from elsewhere). I'll watch anyone play, but don't care too much who wins unless an American is involved. As a tennis fan, I watch and love the level of play. I don’t particularly care which country they’re from. I love the way Alcaraz plays the game. Couldn’t care less that he’s from Spain.
She was impressive. Andreeva is someone I think can win multiple majors so huge win. I like her chances of getting to the QFs. That quarter has 3 Americans. When Townsend is playing well, she is so much fun to watch…a really unique player.

Fritz saved the American men for now. Hard to judge Shelton's loss because of the injury but Taylor's the most consistent IMO
Fritz will never win anything IMO. He’s the Todd Martin of this generation.
