maybe it was a bad call but Duke didn’t wrestle with the same fire he had been and that’s why he lost
That's absolutely true as well. When Liledahl lost to Peterson last year I said that will never happen again. I don't think anyone stops duke again. He will learn and grow and potentially take a redshirt and come back like zain

season 1 hug GIF

Robideau with an inspiring 9 minutes of finger grabbing.
The guy did nothing the entire match. Didn’t deserve to win.

@OhioLion -- the Quote function is not always working for me (too many windows opened, which is taxing the memory).

But to answer your question:

As I wrote, in my quick review I thought it was a TD, but the ref called it really early, and Robideau grabbed a leg just as the TD was whistled.

So it goes back to whether the review panel thought control was established. Duke had a cradle while Robideau had a leg, then Robideau lost the leg for a sec or two, then he got it back. The mat ref probably wishes he hadn't called it so early, though in SV, you are supposed to call it as soon as you think points are scored.

In looking at it again on replay, I'm not all that surprised it was overturned. Control wasn't established long enough. Would Duke have gotten control? We'll never know. Cradles don't generally break locks around the offensive wrestler's leg. If the offensive wrestler can put the defensive wrestler on their back, then the defensive wrestler usually releases the leg lock to try to roll off their back. Certainly not a sure thing, either way.

165 SF - #1 Mitchell Mesenbrink vs. #12 Cesar Alvan (COL)

Period 1:
Here we go! Circling, tying up & hand fighting. Alvan shoots, Mesenbrink shoots, but nobody scores. Alvan is a big kid. Mesenbrink shoots, but no luck. He presses forward. Alvan gets double unders & tries a throw, but no luck. Stalemate & restart. Mesenbrink shoots & gets a leg, then finishes the TD, 3-0. Mesenbrink gets Alvan bellied out. Alvan works back to his base. Mesenbrink bars the arm & tries to run it over. He jumps to the other side & throws in a half nelson. He jumps back to the other side & runs the bar arm over. The ref is holding 4 NF. Alvan looks pinned, but the ref doesn't like something. I don't know how much flatter Mesenbrink can get him & time expires. 4 NF for Mesenbrink, 7-0 Mesenbrink +1:52 RT

Period 2:
Mesenbrink takes down & quickly gets the escape, 8-0. Mesenbrink immediately shoots & finishes another TD, 11-0. He gets Alvan bellied out again. Mesenbrink bars the arm again & is trying to run it over. He turns Alvan & gets 4 NF before Alvan rolls back to his belly. Mesenbrink wins by 15-0.

Mitchell Mesenbrink TECH Cesar Alvan 15-0 (4:11)

this isn't about the replay review. it's about the incompetence of the ref stopping the match. he shouldn't ref again at NCAAs

You have a cradle locked up, the ref calls a TD, match over. How is that reviewable?! If the ref lets them continue to wrestle, he probably takes him to his back. Just horrible!!!
The only way that call should ever be reversed if it is an obvious miss, like Stevie Wonder could see it miss.

I do know that particular ref should never be allowed to to nationals again. Too freaking incompetent.

PJ definitely has a tough cut. Would make sense for him to shirt next year and let him settle into 165 after Mitch graduates.

The lesson for Duke to take away is slaughter everyone. Come back and demolish the field. Which, I think he's going to do for the next 3 years.
Exactly he was doing it all tournament don’t know why he turtled in this match.
Then the guy basically quotes nickal. Gof@&k your self robideau.
