Any idea why it is so thin? I suspect Rhule wants to go heavy on the portal in 2026 and needs to keep the roster additions light. I'm guessing it will be on the order of 20 transfers to fill the OL, DL and the other senior departures (which aren't many).

I think you are guess is correct

Why get HS kids at all really? College Basketball, while clearly smaller rosters, has figured it out.

Use those poverty programs as your minor league feeder team and get players that are older.

If Rhule was smart, he would try to get one of his asst coaches a head coaching job at a minor league school to help that feeder process even more.

You take high schoolers who are either high end line prospects or immediate freshman contributors. You also have to remember that we’ve already flipped the roster and lose very few seniors. We don’t have room for even 20 recruits right now.

Yep, no HS projects or "diamonds in the rough"

It's thinner because there's not a lot of roster room. Remember this is a young roster with relatively lot's of eligibility left.

If Rhule's contract extension included some cash for portal kids as an under-the-table promise, loads needs to be spent to acquire competent tackles and high end DTs.

Portal recruiting has improved. Finding Hunter after his freshman year was a steal. Key has been what I expected. Nwaneri has been better than expected, seems like those high profile recruits never pan out for us. Spindler seems pretty good. Not a huge fan of #15 or #33 but it is what it is.

How many of those guys are the ones that aren't going to be quality on the two-deep? I would clear some roster space of anyone that hasn't shown they aren't capable of being a starter at some point.

This is gaslighting

Key was ranked the 34th prospect in the portal and 10th WR overall. Isn’t even close to that. he’s a bust
His best year at Kentucky he had 47 catches. It was clear to me he wasn't a dominant player. Hunter taking catches away from Key is a good thing being that Hunter is dynamic.

Is the HS recruiting that much more of a risk than the portal? Are players that go into the portal obvious starters because of superior skills or because the team they are going to has holes to fill? Are kids that are starting at their current school less likely to

How many players are we going to lose to the portal?

I have more questions than answers. This all seems like a big game of guessing to me.

I'd recruit guys more around Nebraska and surrounding states and nil the farther away guys. just because a couple players like 0 & 9 might be a bit more loyal then a guy your bringing in from miami or nj..as far as living in the area their whole life...and being more accustomed to it. then they might not bolt if a nil offer is a lil higher

Sounds good. Unfortunately, Nebraska has 11 HS commits for 2026 and almost all of them are projects.
Depending on how you look at it, aren't about all high school recruits projects?

When I look at the class, I only see three projects. But there's a difference to me between diamond in the rough and high upside prospect. We've got some good guys coming in.

Guys like Barney at skill positions project quickly. Very few are ready to contribute and there’s always the question of how they handle the changes that college brings. We’ve had hundreds of extremely talented guys never play over the decades because they didn’t adapt well.

Nebraska's offense doesn't get enough snaps to get everyone enough touches. No one has enough receptions outside of maybe Hunter. What about Haarberg? That dude should be a weapon. Where's Carter Nelson? Why isn't Cortez Mills on the field more, dude is like Walmart always open. Why doesn't Nebraska run more?

Damn, not enough snaps and too many wasted plays with pass rushers running wild.

Mills might have cost us game by running a wrong route that caused an interception. I’m trying to remember if that happened versus Michigan??? I think it was Benning who commented on the route on the radio call.

I didn't know that and I was at the game. I missed that one. Must have been out of my seat letting one of the small blattered drunks pass by on their way back from the can.

Correct... the 2026 class was always going to be thinner... 2027 is looking impressive
Thinner, sure, but elite blueblood programs don’t take years off on the recruiting trail and land 18/18 in the Big Ten. NU better go OFF and fill every hole with a quality starter and depth through the transfer portal.

I didn’t get to watch the Micheater game so I could be wrong about which game it happened in. If Mills can’t run the prescribed routes it’s a problem. Not sure how his perimeter blocking is either. One of the reasons Dylan might be holding the ball so long is that he wants to be sure some of the guys are going to be where they’re supposed to be.

Would EJ and Donovan Jones be considered projects? The Bellevue kids were elite? I want more highly recruited kids but it's not always that simple. People hated Fidone, who was as highly ranked as you get, and now we have a walk-on starting who is pretty dang good.
