Currie is just barely under the 4-star threshold. PSU recruited plenty of kids in that ratings range under the previous staff (including Tyler Warren). From what I gather, the new staff prioritizes certain traits (like size) at different position groups, and they will go get what they are looking for regardless of what recruiting services say. So, we should expect them to bring in a number of three-star players they identify as kids that will fit well what they want to do. The hope is that the staff, with a bit of a track record to back it up, can coach and develop really well the kids they evaluate and target.

I might become concerned if the blue-chip ratio of signed classes starts dropping below the 50% level as a trend, if they strike out on most of the top players in PA they target, or if they don't acquire enough speed at skill positions and linebackers (speed is kind of important at the B1G level). But, so far we need to give them a chance to get settled into a new region of the country and establish their recruiting footprint. I see that they are targeting quite a number of blue-chip guys. Let's see how they can close, but we have a long way to go.
Yep, and if this kid goes to a camp next month he could rise 100 spots if he puts up good numbers. Kid has offers from all of the ACC and Missouri, probably going to get more too

He's got the TE size the staff covets. Performing well at a camp for a kid his size can easily result in a ratings bump.

The 6'7+ kids are usually busts.
Yeah, just like 6'7 Benjamin Brahmer that followed Campbell from ISU.

The #1 TE in the portal that had multiple All-Big 12 honors (Second Team in 2025), Freshman All-American recognition (2023), Mackey Award semifinalist (2024), and numerous Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selections.

Yes, like Kyle Brady for example. ;-)
Lol

You went back 30 years and did not even name a guy who was 6'7.

You also skipped over Zach kuntz, Egan boyer, Jimmy christ, gellerstadt, Malek McNeil, sterling jenkins and others.

Don’t get me wrong, long way to go with Spell. But he’s always wanted to go to PSU - he grew up in the state, huge fan of Saquan. But we gave him all the reasons not to come here over the last year.

But we are going to be back, it just needs time. We have one of the most inspirational and genuine football guys to ever come out of the WPIAL in Terry Smith. And Campbell has a history of turning no name recruit RBs into NFL RBs like David Montgomery and Breece Hall. Give him competitive NIL and we still have to be favored.

Im excited to see how this ‘27 class turns out. Seems like it’s going to be PA-heavy, 10-15 guys from their home state repping PSU.

Seems like Coach Huggins has made a big impression on Spell. All of the Notre Dame fan boys had Spell signed, sealed and delivered before his hire. Still a long way to go....

I appreciate your optimism and I share your excitement for the 2027 class. Just for clarity. Breece Hall wasn’t a no name recruit. He was the top player in Kansas in 2019. He was a four star recruit with offers from Michigan, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Baylor, Nebraska, TCU, Iowa, etc. Montgomery, on the other hand, was a three star recruit in the class of 2016 with only three major offers total. ISU, Cincy, and Miami of Ohio. He thrived in Campbell’s system and they developed him into an NFL RB.

There’s plenty of talented players in the 2027 recruiting cycle from PA.

So are you saying the staff should not recruit anyone 6'7" or taller as they will more likely be a bust?

What the % of those under 6'7" that are busts?

I selfishly want both, especially with Hiller being a PA kid.
I would too. Huggins and Clanton seem to have hit the ground running and the recruit feedback has been very positive. Naturally, we all know that in in the end much will depend on dollars but they seem to be making up ground after PSU being MIA for two months on the recruiting trail.

The new coaching staff is really connecting with recruits as the focus on 2027 recruiting. Spell likes Campbell and our new rb coach.
But he REALLY likes Terry Smith. This would be a big get and fantastic news on several levels.

This is STRICTLY fwiw - there is a rumor on X/reddit that Spell could recommit this weekend and announce reclass plans. Potentially enrolling him this summer. JUST A RUMOR, NO TRUE INSIDER CONFIRMATION.

This is just my own thoughts - would it make sense to give him a bag this year because our '26 class is small and mostly full of lower profile recruits? And that would also open up a larger budget for the '27 class, if Spell is not on the books for that year? I don't even know if the budget/salary pool even works like that year to year, but throwing **** at the wall.
