They were calling fouls whenever an Iowa player approached the basket without fail. It looked absurd watching on TV.

CJ is 152nd in the nation in block % according to kenpom. 10th in our conference in B1G games so far. He was #1 in his conference last year.

Shouldn't be such a difference in foul shots, but we don't actually drive to the basket enough to draw fouls. Our big men only go up after a rebound and don't have good offensive touch to draw fouls around the basket. How many shots got blocked in close yesterday that looked clean. Also, we hardly make those easy put backs. Get 3 offensive rebounds in one possession and we should score. On the other end we knock the ball around a lot without grabbing it. Bad hands ?
Iowa tried their hardest to give us the game with unforced errors, but we couldn't convert. They also made the free throws in crunch time. It's just a bad situation especially at the end of a close game when RU has a difficult time manufacturing points. Iowa has 4 or 5 Guys that can create shots and make them including FTs.
Not sure if you can learn anything from a game like this that will make a difference going forward. Just too many mistakes that lead to scoring droughts and the opponents take advantage of it.

Iowa played a lot of the game in zone, and we passed a lot around the perimeter looking for openings - not going to draw a lot of fouls that way. By contrast, we played an aggressive man to man defense that will draw more fouls.

Iowa also tended to commit their fouls away from the ball, which didn't lead to shots.

Foul disparity often points more to style of play than officiating bias.

There were definitely calls that I felt should have been made against Iowa that went unwhistled, but "home cooking" isn't the primary reason for the disparity.

If it makes you feel better, had we had 23 more foul shots, we may have had an extra 6 points. Haha.

Can't wait to see what this coaching staff can do for the future of this program!

These threads bother me. If you want to complain about the refs, complain about specific calls. There is no rule that says the teams are supposed to get an equal number of foul shots.

Sometimes - but sometimes guards play "ole" defense and bigs get behind a zone, too, which lead to points in the paint without fouls. Foul shot disparities aren't always sinister, or proof of bias. Maybe a small handful of calls that weren't great last night, but overall I was more frustrated with the team not working to draw more fouls than I was at refs not blowing their whistle.

been watching games for 40 years, it's been like that for all 40 years(!), and I myself am guilty. the losing oh so doesn't help.

That said, there were a series of bad calls during Iowa's run that definitely contributed to it being a run. Up until that point I thought it was ok.

RU wins and no one remembers Sanders getting hammered for a steal then basket....

@Greene Rice FIG i think CJ is a good shot blocker when he is in front of his man - when he's beat by quicker guys, he should just let them honor foul. That's where my complaint is
